November 7, 2011 Issue 268 Cowboy Hats And Baseball Caps KYGO/Denver PD John Thomas has a theory. Is there, he wonders, a potentially significant splinter group emerging in the format driven by a core of new artists who appeal to younger, non-traditional country fans? By contrast, these are not the traditional 35+ core country fans. Thomas even has working titles for these groups: Cowboy Hats and Baseball Caps. Since arriving in Denver a year ago, Thomas has observed the live music scene in Denver and paid close attention to both concertgoers and KYGO music research tastes, both of which factor into his views. “I wasn’t trying to see it, I just happened to notice it,” he says. In his mind, the artists driving the movement include but are not limited to Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Pistol Annies, Rodney Atkins, Jerrod Niemann, The Zac Brown Band, Easton Corbin and the movement’s poster boy, Eric Church. “I started looking at our music and realized there’s a huge appeal,” Thomas says. “These artists are selling tickets and albums; their music is a little less traditional than what normally plays on a heritage station like KYGO.” Their new fans are non-traditional, too. Thomas has studied them in person at numerous concert and club events since arriving at KYGO in November 2010. (continued on page 7) Cause Celebs: Honorees Scott Borchetta and Drew Carey receive congratulations at the 36th Annual TJ Martell Honors Gala in New York last week. Pictured (l-r) are Javier Colon, Borchetta, Carey and Darius Rucker. Borchetta and Carey were joined by fellow honorees Arnold Palmer and CocaCola exec Bea Perez, with Colon, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and Rucker performing. The event raised a record $1.3 million for cancer research. Curious Case Of The Cup “Aside from Taylor Swift’s career, which was a different manifestation, this is the first viral thing that has come back to hit country square in the forehead.” So says consultant Rusty Walker, speaking, of course, of Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup.” With YouTube views for the video exceeding 2.5 million in just a couple of weeks, the album track has found a home at Country radio, too. Currently at No. 33 and sporting 15 adds this week, it’s forcing a discussion at radio. Not bad for a song that co-writer Jim Beavers says “has no drums and ©2011 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. Sign up free at w w w.countr yaircheck .com. And from the first play, everyone went crazy.” Like Kennedy, WYCD/Detroit OM/PD Tim Roberts’ station is out in front on spins for the song. “It immediately became our No. 1 phone record and gets voted into our Top 7 at 7 every Jim Beavers night. It puts fun back in radio in a way we haven’t seen in awhile.” Should that instant reaction and explosive web viewership affect programmers’ approaches? “I’ve got some PDs who are very strong supporters, and I’ve talked to several who are afraid of it,” consultant Joel Raab Mike Kennedy says. “Most of my stations are playing the song, but not every song has to be played for 20 weeks. Some songs that are more novelty can be more meteoric. I don’t know if it’s a six-week song or 16 weeks, but I suspect it’s somewhere in between.” Roberts doesn’t necessarily equate exposure Tim Roberts to rapid burn. “I always think of that as a positive not a negative,” he says of the viral video. “More exposure is usually a good thing. Overexposure is something that happens over a long period of time.” “Each station needs to look at it in their own way,” Walker adds. “It’s not a standard front-engine, rear-drive kind of song. Some Joel Raab programmers may play it heavily for a few days, drop off it a bit and come back to playing it heavily again. Those who are into platooning will do that, and those who use standard carpet-bombing rotations will do that. It won’t have the same Page 3 The Page Three Pic Stately Group: Willie Nelson celebrates his 50th birthday in 1983 with Waylon Jennings, local officials and KNIX/Phoenix staffers. That’s really the art of programming – knowing when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em.” Thank you, Don Schlitz. “I don’t worry about it,” Kennedy says. “We’ll play it as long as we can and figure it out when someone says time is up. We’ve still got ‘Clancy’s Tavern’ out there, which I’m just guessing will be a single ... I can’t wait to play it.” SESAC Awards: Great Scott! KILT/Houston. Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio? It was Aug. 7, 2000. I was driving I-40 West outside Nashville when “My Love Goes On And On” came on. I was sitting there thinking, “God dangit, who is this? I know this song!” Then Chris Cagle the DJ said, “That was a new artist named Chris Cagle.” I almost wrecked. Which regional is the most interesting driver? Matt Corbin. He gets angry at everyone in front of him like he’s going to get a gun out and start shooting people. And it’s never his fault. I’m like, “Easy, cowboy!” They make sedatives for that. Are you a prankster? I don’t start anything, but I will finish it. One time we were on a tour, and the opening band shoe-polished lewd things and taped a bunch of blown-up condoms on the tour bus when my stepmother came to a show. I was so embarrassed. The next night, we were in Michigan and they had to leave for Las Vegas right after their set. While they were onstage, I kidnapped the road manager and duct-taped him in the backroom of their bus so he couldn’t warn anybody. Then my road manager bought 12 50pound bags of ice. Then I took the bedding off the bunks, layered ice on the foam mattresses, made the beds back up and cranked the heat up to 90 degrees. With 12 drunk guys on a bus, that is a longass ride, especially when you’re forced to sleep on the floor. Any awkward requests? One of my first shows back on the radio tour, I played a radio event at an outdoor biker bar. It was packed with probably 1,700 people in the parking lot. After the sixth song, this drunk lady walks up and requests Keith Urban. She says, “You’ve been playing all these cool songs by this other guy. So, can you play some Keith?” I said, “Ma’am, I’m the other guy. I’m Chris Cagle. These are my songs.” She says, “That’s cool! Do you know Toby Keith’s ‘Whiskey Girl?’” I asked Michael Powers, “What do I do?” He said, “Sing.” I said, “OK. I don’t know ‘Whiskey Girl,’ but I’ll play you a Tim McGraw song. It’s ‘What Kinda Gone.’” And she goes, “Aw, man, I love that song! I didn’t know Tim sang that!” She was hammered. dynamic that occurs in a reality show house. “Everybody that had ever been a team athlete found a way to get along. They thought someone was after them the whole time.” Back in Nashville, the secluded life is not quite his speed. “No CMA Week for me,” he says. “No remotes. I haven’t missed a radio remote in five years and begged NBC to let me go. At least CRS is coming up. I’ll be free to roam by then.” Artist News Jason Aldean and Margaret Durante will perform an acoustic concert at downtown Nashville’s Riverfront Station tomorrow (11/8) at 12:30pm. Scorpions, Love At First Bite Tour, Costa Mesa, CA: It was my first concert. My dad was a cop and took me to the show in the back of a police car with five other officers who were working the show. 2. John Denver, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe: I was so excited my grandparents were taking me Adam Jeffries to this that I couldn’t sleep the night before and ended up falling asleep in the middle of the show. 3. Dan Fogelberg/Leader Of The Band: It really moves me. It’s well written and powerful. 4. Collin Raye/Love Me: It was the first country video I’d ever seen. I was hooked on country music from that point on. 5. Judas Priest’s Screaming For Vengeance: It was my first metal album and I listened to it incessantly. Growing up in Orange County, I was smack dab in the middle of the ‘80s metal revolution in Los Angeles with Poison, Mötley Crüe, RATT, Cinderella, etc. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon. Whatever. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Show tunes. I’ve never been to a Broadway show. Maybe I’d like it if I tried it. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Anything by pianist George Winston. He’s just amazing. My favorite is the album Autumn. Rhett Akins and son Thomas Rhett Akins are among the songwriters. Buddy Cannon and Mark Wright produced. Rascal Flatts The Best Of Rascal Flatts Live (Lyric Street/Hollywood) “Bob That Head,” “Bless The Broken Road,” “Still Feels Good” and “Here’s To You” are among the cuts on this live 10-track hits compilation. Sign up free at www.countryaircheck.com. Send news to [email protected] November 7, 2011 Country Aircheck Weekly at night and on weekends, too.” No dedicated category has been created, says Thomas, “because there aren’t enough songs for that yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are by this time next year.” The trick is to massage music logs so that the influx of Caps music doesn’t polarize the 35-44 crowd. “You want to neutralize it on both sides with something right down the middle,” Thomas explains. “If yesterday at 7:15am it was Strait, Brantley Gilbert and Rascal Flatts, and today it was Luke Bryan, Brantley and Justin Moore, you just changed the listening experience.” A look at Mediabase shows that of the 43 currents played on KYGO last week, seven of them were Baseball Cap artists as defined by Thomas. Country Aircheck asked him how these songs were performing in callout research. “Aldean, Zac Brown and Eli Young Band are through the roof, but it’s not all testing,” he says. “Some of it may never test all the way to a power, but that doesn’t mean we’d discount it, because that reflects audience starting to come from other formats. They’re fringe listeners, and this is what’s pulling them in.” Page 8 Defining this audience may be difficult. “I don’t know if it’s a demographic or an identification with the music and the artist,” Thomas says. “It’s a preference, but it’s not exclusive. I saw just as many males as females at these shows. The people who are actively coming to the format are younger. They’re going to go find this music, and sometimes what they find isn’t on the radio yet.” So has KYGO’s careful spoon-feeding of this Baseball Cap coalition been ratified in younger-demo ratings performance? “Yes,” Thomas says. “In June and July, we were killin’ it. Are we crushing the market 18-34? No, but I have three Top 40s, a Hot AC and a couple of strong Rock stations to compete with.” In fact, KYGO has consistently ranked among the top seven stations in Denver with adults 18-34 over the past seven months. Along with the fickle nature of younger listeners, Thomas points out the volatility of PPM: “One month you’re eighth, and the next you’re No. 1 in that demo. I just know I’ve witnessed the 18-34 and 18-28 crowd respond to this. I’m not sure this is happening in every market, but I see it in Denver.” Send your thoughts on the Caps vs. Hats theory to [email protected]. Of the 96 stations (mostly with a 1.0 share or greater), 47 decreased, 42 increased and seven remained level. The net share loss was 3%, which followed September’s 1.9% dip after August’s 2.2% decline. WUSN/Chicago remained the cume king, with a weekly audience of 1,306,000. Sept. Share (Rank) Oct.
