40 Years of a Legacy Tom Tiler - Founder · 1932-2002 In their early twenties and with very little money in their pockets, Tom Tiler, and his wife Sheila, came to Canada from England hoping to find a better life and more opportunity. For over 20 years, Tom worked in the corporate environment where he honed his need to produce quality products and provide outstanding customer service. But, being entrepreneurial, Tom, along with a colleague, decided to venture out and start a business that eventually evolved and became HST Synthetics Ltd in 1974. This new company started as a manufacturer of pool blankets during the growth years of the swimming pool industry in Canada. HST Synthetics’ first product was called the “Sunblanket”, an energy saving pool cover that reduced pool water heat loss. The “Sunblanket” gradually developed into the “Sunbubble”, a product that HST still manufactures today. The HST Synthetics partnership dissolved eventually and the Tiler family became the sole owner of the company. As the swimming pool industry and backyard living markets grew so did HST Synthetics with the addition of new products and several facility expansions. HST Synthetics was one of the first companies to start manufacturing spa covers in Canada and quickly grew into one of the largest, a position they still proudly hold today. Now, 40 years later, HST Synthetics remains a leading supplier to the pool and spa industry across Canada and Europe. Sadly and unexpectedly, Tom Tiler passed away in 2002. However, the Tiler family cherishes the legacy that Tom created and continues to honor his example of caring about the customer and consistently works to produce the best quality products and customer service possible.
