Create the Easy Transfer Drive Note: If you have already created an Easy Transfer Drive, you may skip to step 11 1. Click the start button and type “easy”. Click “Windows Easy Transfer” at the top.
2. You will be welcomed and given a brief overview of what Windows Easy Transfer can migrate. Click next.
3. Select the last option as shown. In this example we will use an external hard drive, but you can use the network if both machines are connected; just follow the guide.
4. Click “This is my new computer”
5. Click “No”
6. You will need to install easy transfer on the xp machine, so select the first option as shown.
7. Select “External hard disk or shared network folder”
8. Select the correct drive that corresponds to your external drive. In this example it is the “E:” drive. It is not necessary for the drive to be empty, but it is recommended.
9. Easy Transfer will copy the files needed to run to the external drive. Once this is done, you can use this drive again and again for any computers you backup data on.
10. Leave this windows open on the new computer and we will come back to it. For now, we are going to switch to the old computer and backup the data.
Using Easy Transfer Drive to Backup Data
11. On the old computer: Log in as an administrator, connect the external drive we prepared earlier, and browse to it in “My Computer”
12. In the root of the drive should be a shortcut for “Windows Easy Transfer”. Double-Click to open it.
13. Windows Easy Transfer will prepare and then you will be presented with the familiar welcome screen. Click “Next”.
14. We will be backing up to the external drive so select the last option.
15. Select the only option. “This is my old computer”
16. Easy transfer will begin scanning user folders. This may take a while depending on how many people have used this computer.
17. Once the scanning has complete, uncheck all but the user whose data you wish to backup
18. Optionally, you can get very granular about what your user wants/needs backed up.
19. Once you have selected what you will be backing up, Easy Transfer will ask for a password. This password protects the migration data so if it is stored in a shared place, the data is still secure. • Use your best judgment on what you use for a password. If it is forgotten this whole backup process must be re-done. A password like “qsys0208” would work fine also.
20. Select where the backup will be put. In this case it is the external drive “E:” You can also name the migration file anything you’d like. If this is being done for multiple users using their 5x2 might be helpful. In this example, I just had one user so I left the name “Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer”
21. Easy Transfer will now process and compress the backup data.
22. Once the backup is complete, click through the next few windows to close out.
We are now done with the old computer.
Transferring Backup Data to New Computer
23. On the windows we left open, click “yes” to confirm that Easy Transfer has already backed up the data from the old pc. • If the windows was closed, or you didn’t need to prepare an Easy Transfer drive you can get to this same window by following steps 12-15 from earlier.
24. A window will open and ask you to select where the migration file is stored. The migration file for this example is on the external hard drive “E:”
25. Enter the password you selected in step 30 and click next.
26. This window will show you the available data that can be migrated to the new computer. Click “Transfer”.
27. The Transfer will begin and might take some time depending on how much data was selected for restore.
Once the transfer is complete you can view a report if you’d wish. You can now log off and have the user login to their computer.
