Stdt,mer1t ut Indistrituted Surplus, 1970 48 I NTRODUCTION r 1971 demst riied cut i med grjwth for the credit union movement in Canada. Deposits and share capital in local credit unions rose by almost one billion dollars to a total of $5.5 billion, for an increase of over 22 7.. Lea dCpbts et is During the year, membership in credit unions increased by approximately 251,000 to a total membership of 5.4 million for a 4.8 7. rise. Total assets at the end of 1971 stood at $5.6 billion for an overall increase of 21.7 7. for the year. This proved to be the fastest growth rate for credit unions in more than 20 years. Deposits and equity per member rose to 1,002 from 858 during the year for a 16.8 7. gain. Ccci fut Ia progres- In Table 2 the number of credit unions are compared with the number of branches of chartered banks and trust companies. The number of credit unions in Canada are nearly eight times the number of trust companies' branches and there are seven credit unions for every ten branches of chartered banks; in Quebec and New Brunawick there are more credit unions than there are branches of chartered banks and trust companies combines. Standardization of Statistics After extensive research by a national comeittee under the chairmanship of Mr. A.A. (Tony) Heidt covering several national and regional meetings, a standardized questionnaire was officially accepted and approved for use by all provinces at the 14th Jnterpovincial Conference of the National Association of Administrators of Cc-operative Legislation in June 1967. Most provinces are now collecting data from local credit unions on the isfs of this uniform accounting system modified to nuvincial practices. As a result, the credit union -uvement is building a soundly based structure of statistical data which enables credit unions to compare their performance with other financial intermediaries; province, to compare performance with other provinces; and policy decisions on the credit union movement to be more prudently based on factual data. capital social dana lea caisees locales d'epargne et de credit se sont accrus d'environ on mulliard de dollars (près de 22 7.) pour atteindre one valeur totale de 5.5 niilliarda de dollar.. sion amorcCe Is plus rapide pour lee caisaes d'dpargne et de credit dans plus de 20 ans. Methodology The provincial department responsible for the administration of credit unions collects data from credit unions chartered to do buaine8e in its province. The department then tabulates the data into provincial aggregates and submits a report for the whole province on the national standardized form to Statistic. Canada. Statistics Canada in turn analyses the provincial returns by comparison with other provincial returns and previous annual data. After researching inconsistencies, Statistics Canada proceeds to publish the annual report for credit unions across Canada by Provinces and by Canada totals. In many provinces an annual return from each active credit union chartered to carry on business is mandatory; other provinces compile data for the credit unions from which they were able to obtain returns and then estimate for the missing credit unions; a few proceed to employ statistical techniques to estimate for non-reporters based on results of reporting credit on ions. These differences in treatment for non-reporting redtt unions result in some discrepancies between to' annual figures submitted in this report and data Ces différentea facons de procéder dans le cas des caiaeea non déclarantea se trsdui.ent par un certain manque de concordance entre lea chiffrea annuela figurant dana Is vinces et avec lea statiatiques annuellea antérieure.. Après analyse des incompatibilites, Statistique Canada entreprend Is publication de son bulletin annuel our lea caisaea &Cpar- gne et de credit par province at pour le Canada entier. -6- ihlihed iii i :ierl. jnaocial listiCutjons report (catalogue No. 61-006). réset hulletin et les chiffres ubljs trimestrielIeaenz daris la publication Institutions Financières (a° de catalogue 61-006). Differences in fiscal year-ends also cause distortions between the annual and quarterlies as do practices for year-end transactions such as dividend payments, allocations to reserves, etc. Thus, allowances should be made for these differences when comparing the annual with the fourth quarter data. In order to provide Statistics Canada with the required categories for the quarterlies, some provinces tend to employ distribution ratios trom the last available annual data to estimate the quarterly breakdown of some category items. As a result, the subsequent annual figures may differ somewhat on specific items from the quarterly figures but the subgroups totals for each categories should generally agree except as outlined above. In the common-size tables, the balance sheet uses total assets as the yardstick for measuring categories on a cosmion basis and the operating statement uses total revenue for this purpose.
