General This manual contains description and operation instructions, shop level cleaning, inspection and testing on the N1340B-1 SELCAL Encoder (Encoder). All weights and measurements in this manual are in English units, with their equivalent metric weight or measure in parenthesis. This manual is written in Simplified English. Simplified English is defined by the Association Europeenne des Constructeurs de Materiel Aerospatial (AECMA, Association of European Builders of Aerospace Material). Simplified English helps manual users who may not speak English as their native language. It also helps manual users who do speak English as their native language by making sure that all writing is clear and that all terms have only one meaning. 23-20-25 Page I-1 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER 2. High Voltage Warning The Encoder has dangerous voltage potentials. Take applicable precautions whenever you see this symbol. 3. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Sensitive Devices The Encoder has components which electrostatic discharge can damage. We show a caution symbol when one of these components can be damaged during a procedure or test. Use applicable ESD procedures whenever you see one of these or any other ESD precaution symbol. General Selective calling (SELCAL) is a method of selectively signaling an individual aircraft from a ground control station. Ground to air contact is established by the transmission of a four-tone signal on an existing VHF or HF radio network. The overall system consists of SELCAL ground and airborne equipment used in conjunction with existing radio facilities. The ground equipment provides the tone source and code selecting facilities. The airborne equipment consists of one or more decoder units installed in each associated aircraft to provide automatic listening. Each decoder unit is responsive to a unique 4-tone coded signal. When the correct signal is received, the decoder is activated and the aircraft personnel are alerted by a buzzer or light. 2. Description The N1304B SELCAL Encoder conforms to the requirements of ARINC 714-6 “MARK-3 AIRBORNE SELCAL SYSTEM”, Part III - Ground Selective Calling Unit. The SELCAL Encoder is housed in a self-contained console, which includes an integral pushbutton keyboard and display. All circuit boards, interconnections, and circuit components are packaged in the console with the keyboard and display. Refer to Figure 101. The Encoder console is designed to be used as a desk-top unit by resting horizontally on four rubber feet or by tilting upward with the aid of a metal bar, which is attached to the bottom of the unit. The console is also designed to be easily rack mounted by using two mounting brackets and hardware which are supplied with each Encoder unit. The Encoder is shipped with the mounting brackets and the tilt stand attached. The user may remove either the tilt stand or the rack mounting hardware if it is not required. If you choose to remove the rack mounting hardware, re-install the four screws in the Encoder. Digital frequency synthesis techniques are used in the Encoder to generate 16 individual tones in the frequency range of 312.6 Hz to 1479 Hz. By using various combinations of the 16 tones, 10,920 unique coded signals can be derived. Synthesizer frequency stability is achieved using a crystalcontrolled time base. Other standard features incorporated into the SELCAL Encoder console are: • • • • • • • • • Highly visible LCD Display 16 pushbutton front panel code entry with key click feedback. Convenient front panel access to code SEND and code CANCEL pushbuttons Code send indicator Self Test Capability 120V/240V 50-60Hz internal power supply Computer Interface via a RS-232 connection. Software module which can externally generate codes and transfer them to the Encoder. Auxiliary relay for keying or audio switching. 23-20-25 Page 101 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER 3. Indicators and User Controls A. Indicators and Displays (1) Display A LCD display which shows up to four codes (A, B, C, D, etc.). LCD is backlit for nighttime operation in a low light area. Once a new code is entered following a previous 4 character code, only the new code is displayed. The letters are displayed from right to left as they are entered. (2) Code Send Indication The LCD display shows “SENDING” during code transmission. B. User Controls (1) Code Entry Pushbuttons There are 16 code entry keys and are labeled A through S. The keys have tactile feedback. (2) Code Send Switch A Code Send switch allows code transmission only after a valid four character code is entered. (3) Cancel Switch The Cancel switch will interrupt a code transmission and clear the display when pressed. 23-20-25 Page 105 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER 5. Coding and Tone Frequencies The SELCAL console coding scheme consists of four tones transmitted in two groups of two tones (similar to a touch-tone phone). Each set of two tones is transmitted simultaneously. Each transmitted tone is represented by a code letter. The code letters and frequencies are shown in the following table. Code Frequencies Table 102 Code Letter Frequency (Hz) A 312.6 B 346.7 C 384.6 D 426.6 E 473.2 F 524.8 G 582.1 H 645.7 J 716.1 K 794.3 L 881.0 M 977.2 P 1083.9 Q 1202.3 R 1333.5 S 1479.1 23-20-25 Page 106 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER Each aircraft is assigned a unique four digit code. When the ground station (equipped with SELCAL encoding equipment) wishes to call a specific aircraft, this code is entered into the SELCAL Encoder and transmitted. The transmitted signal has a duration of approximately 2.2 seconds, with each tone burst lasting 1.0 + 0.25 seconds separated by an interval of 0.2 + 0.1 second. For example, If the code selected is ABCD; tones A and B are the first tone burst. Tones C and D are the second tone burst. Refer to the following figure for a representation of the four tone burst. Sample Code Diagram Figure 102 23-20-25 Page 107 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER 6. External Connections A. Power Input The N1304B-1 uses an IEC C-13 style power module that accepts both 120 Vac and 240 Vac 50-60 Hz power. A NEMA 5-15 style power cord is provided with each unit. The user must provide a 240 Vac power cord, if necessary, that is compatible with local requirements. B. Tone Output Two screw terminals (Audio Hi and Lo) provide termination points for the Encoder’s tone output and tie-point connection for the transmitter’s audio tone input. The Encoder can be connected to a high or low impedance load. The audio output can also be connected to a biased microphone input. C. Transmitter Control Lines There are two sets of screw-type relay contact terminals on the rear panel. These terminals are used for connecting transmitter keying or audio switching lines. The relay operates during code transmission, as shown when “SENDING” is displayed on the LCD. D. RS-232 Interface An RS-232 interface is provided to control all aspects of the Encoder using an external PC. Users can create their own programs to interface with the Encoder. Refer to paragraph 7.B for the command instructions. E. Installation Wiring Figures 103 and 104 show installation wiring diagrams for two types of uses, either connecting the Encoder directly to a radio or to a radio and microphone combination. 23-20-25 Page 108 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER Installation Wiring Diagram For Radio Only Figure 103 Installation Wiring Diagram For Radio and Microphone Figure 104 23-20-25 Page 109 Jun 2/06 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL N1304B-1 SELCAL ENCODER 7.
