MEDIA RELEASE Curtiss-Wright Controls Announces New Conduction Cooled FPGA-Accelerated JPEG2000 Video Compression XMC Card New XMC-280 CC module captures, compresses, decompresses and displays two channels of dual video channels at resolutions up to 1080p and 1920x1200 LETCHWORTH, UK – November 7, 2011 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and Compact PCI products for the rugged deployed aerospace and defense market, has announced a new conduction cooled (CC) variant of its popular XMC-280 JPEG2000 video compression XMC mezzanine card. The new XMC-280 CC is an open standards-based module that speeds and simplifies the integration of high performance, visually lossless video compression into rugged military systems. The XMC-280 captures, compresses, decompresses and displays two channels of video at resolutions up to 1080p and 1920x1200. The XMC-280 CC is designed for demanding military applications, such as situational awareness, that require the distribution or recording, display and storage of mission-critical video. “The XMC-280 CC delivers industry leading video recording of video streams, with JPEG2000 hardware compression enabling efficient recording and distribution of high definition video streams over Gigabit Ethernet networks,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “Its superior performance JPEG2000 algorithm is accelerated on an FPGA platform. With the release of the new conduction cooled version the XMC-280 CC can address an even wider range of ground, air and sea applications.” About JPEG 2000 Video Compression JPEG2000 video compression technology differs from other techniques, such as MPEG4 by compressing each frame individually, eliminating any dependencies on preceding or subsequent frames. This frame-by-frame compression is results in lower latency and greater resistance to errors in transmission. For applications where MPEG4 is desired CWCEC offers its DPMC-281 compression card. XMC-280 CC Key Features: • XMC (VITA 57) mezzanine format • Video IO via XMC rear IO connectors Pn5 and Pn6 o up to 1920x1200 at 60Hz o analog RGB o PAL/NTSC composite o Digital DVI signals. • Captured video is compressed using a high-performance FPGA-based JPEG2000 algorithm, or transmitted over PCIe interface uncompressed • Audio support o Two (2) stereo channels or four (4) mono channels o 16-bit 48kHz, WAV and PCM encoding MEDIA RELEASE • • • • • JPEG2000 ISO/IEC15444-1 image compression standard (9/7 irreversible wavelet compression) o Visually lossless compression at ratios in excess of 10:1 o Support for both 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 video coding Four-lane PCIe 1.1 interface optimized to provide in excess of >500MB/s in each direction Software support includes: o Windows and Linux on x86 hosts o Linux on PowerPC/Power Architecture hosts Fully integrated into CWCEC Video Recording and Distribution (VRD) and Sentric2 digital recording solutions. Available at CWCEC Level 200 conduction-cooled environmental specification, as well as a Level 0 air-cooled version with front panel IO. The XMC-280 CC enables users to distribute multiple channels of high-definition video over standard Gigabit Ethernet networks. It combines excellent video quality with minimal network latency. Details are retained at 50:1 compression so that up to eight (8) channels of 1080p60 video can be transmitted over a single Gigabit Ethernet channel. This industry-standard XMC-format module can be deployed on a variety of conductioncooled host formats, including 6U VME and 3U and 6U VPX boards, such as CWCEC’s VPX3-1252 rugged 3U VPX single board computer, and associated carrier cards.
