Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term „power tool“ in all of the warnings listed below refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless) power tool. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. 1 Work area a Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. b Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. b c d e 2 Electrical safety a Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. Additional safety instructions for sanders Take special care when sanding some woods (e.g. beech, oak) and metal which may produce toxic dust. Wear a dust mask specifically designed for protection against toxic dust and fumes and ensure that persons within or entering the work area are also protected. The electric motor has been designed for one voltage only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. Your DEWALT tool is double insulated in accordance with EN 60745; therefore no earth wire is required. Using an extension cable If an extension cable is required, use an approved extension cable suitable for the power input of this tool (see technical data). The minimum conductor size is 1.5 mm2. When using a cable reel, always unwind the cable completely. Also refer to the table below. • Use this tool in a well-ventilated area when sanding ferrous metals. Do not operate the tool near flammable liquids, gases or dust. Sparks or hot particles from sanding or arcing motor brushes may ignite combustible materials. Sanding paint Observe the applicable regulations for sanding paint. Pay special attention to the following: 7 ENGLISH Conductor size (mm2) 0.75 1.00 1.50 2.50 4.00 Voltage 115 230 Amperes 0 - 2.0 2.1 - 3.4 3.5 - 5.0 5.1 - 7.0 7.1 - 12.0 12.1 - 20.0 0 - 2.0 2.1 - 3.4 3.5 - 5.0 5.1 - 7.0 7.1 - 12.0 12.1 - 20.0 Dust extraction (fig. The tool is supplied with an adapter for connecting a dustbag or a vacuum extractor. • Fit the dust extraction adaptor (6) onto the outlet (3) as shown. • Attach the dustbag (7) by aligning the openended slots (8) with the notches (9) and fitting the bag onto the adaptor (6). • Turn the assembly clockwise to lock it in position. • Alternatively, connect the tool to a vacuum extractor using the adaptor (6). Assembly and adjustment Instructions for use Prior to assembly and adjustment always unplug the tool. Fitting sanding discs (fig. B) The tool uses 5" (125 mm) hook and loop sanding discs with an 8 hole dust extraction pattern. • Place the tool on a table, sanding pad (4) up. • Place the sanding disc directly on top of the sanding pad. • Hold the sanding pad (4) with one hand and align the dust extraction holes (5). • Press the disc firmly onto the sanding pad. Setting the electronic speed control dial (fig. A) (D26453 only) The speed is infinitely variable from 7,000 - 12,000 min-1 using the electronic speed control dial (2). • Turn the electronic speed control dial to the required level. The correct setting, however, is a matter of experience. • Generally, harder materials require a higher setting. 8 • Always observe the safety instructions and applicable regulations. • Make sure all materials to be sanded are well secured. • Apply only a gentle pressure to the workpiece. Excessive pressure does not improve the sanding effect, but only results in an increased load on the machine and causes the abrasive to tear. • Avoid overloading. Do not sand magnesium! Switching on and off (fig. A) • Set the sanding speed using the electronic speed control dial (2). • To switch the tool on, set the on/off switch to position I. • To switch the tool off, set the on/off switch to position O. ENGLISH Sanding (fig. A) • Start with the coarsest grit size. • As the tool produces small abrasion marks in all directions, it is not necessary to sand with the grain. • Check your work at short intervals. • Always switch off the tool when work is finished and before unplugging. Cleaning Keep the ventilation slots clear and regularly clean the housing with a soft cloth. • After the tool is used in metal sanding applications without dustbag, clean the tool using low-pressure air. Protecting the environment Emptying the dustbag (fig. C) For efficient dust extraction empty the dust collector when it is about one third full. • To empty the dust collector, pull it off together with the adaptor. • Remove the dustbag (7) from the adaptor (6) by turning it counter-clockwise and pulling it off. • Empty the contents of the bag into a waste container. If necessary, use a vacuum extractor to clean the dustbag, applying suction to the interior surface. • Re-fit the dust extraction adaptor. • Re-fit the dustbag. Separate collection. This product must not be disposed of with normal household waste. Should you find one day that your DEWALT product needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not dispose of it with household waste.
