Introduction Power over Ethernet is a new feature of the Compaq Wireless LAN offering that provides an efficient alternative for installing wireless networking equipment. By eliminating the need for power blisters (ac-to-dc converters) and 110/240 VAC power outlet installation, a system installer need only run a single standard Cat 5 twisted pair cable, instead of separate power and Ethernet cable, to each access point. The Power Injectors are typically installed in the wiring closet, and ²inject² DC power onto the Ethernet cable. The injectors constantly check the Ethernet cable for a device that can handle Power over Ethernet. If it does not detect such a device, the device switches off power for that port. This power-monitoring capability protects other devices connected to the Ethernet cable as well as the input port of the switch in case of an installation error.
