HP StorageWorks SDLT 320 Tape Drive
Overview The HP StorageWorks SDLT Tape Drive is a high-capacity, high-performance streaming tape drive designed for use with HP ProLiant servers, HP AlphaServers, and Open SAN storage systems. The tape drive uses Laser Guided Magnetic Recording (LGMR) technology to maximize the amount of data that can be stored on a tape. The SDLT uses a clustered magnetic-resistive (MR) head technology to improve data density, uses Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) technology to provide increased performance, and has a robust tape buckling system for reliability. The SDLT 320 is for HP customers who use Corporate-to-Enterprise servers and require higher performance, greater capacity and enterprise class reliability. The HP StorageWorks SDLT 320 GB Tape Drive extends the advantages of an SDLT-based data protection solution by increasing capacity and performance by 45%. Total costs of ownership are significantly lowered by reducing the number of data cartridges required and by shrinking the backup window for business-critical data. In addition, backward-read compatibility to existing DLT and SDLT-based solutions provides the highest level of investment protection while offering a smooth transition path to new SDLT 320-based data protection solutions. The SDLT 320 offers the same backward-read compatibility to current DLT tape drives as the SDLT 220, but is also write-compatible with the SDLT 220 and utilizes the same DLT1 media and cleaning cartridge.

HP StorageWorks SDLT 320 Tape Drive
Product Highlights Super DLT (SDLT) Technology
Super DLT Tape is an extension of the DLT platform, the industry's de-facto standard for tape backup and data protection. It is designed to meet the business critical demands of enterprise storage customers. The new SDLT platform extends the advantages of DLT technology by increasing capacity, performance, and reliability standards through technological advances in drive head and media design. With backward-read compatibility for DLT Type IV media, the new SDLT tape drive provides customers with an easy migration path to advanced technology for their data protection strategies.
Backward-Read Compatibility
The HP StorageWorks SDLT tape drive family provides backward-read compatibility with DLT Type IV media written by DLT1, DLT VS80, DLT 40, DLT 70, and DLT 80 tape drives. This feature provides the ultimate level of investment protection for customers seeking read compatibility with their current inventory of DLT-based data backups, while providing for an easy transition to SDLT-based data protection solutions.
HP Data Protection Tools Each HP tape drive is supported with multiple software applications and utilities that allow users to easily integrate and maintain their HP backup solutions. Software tools such as HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) and Insight Manager are available via web download from the HP.com website. Additional product information tools such as technology white papers and service advisories can also be accessed through the HP.com website.
DRTape-Ready (Disaster Recovery Utility)
HP DRTape Disaster Recovery Utility is a data recovery tool which replaces the traditional recovery methods associated with manual downloads from floppy or CD-ROM. DRTape is a firmware driven software utility that provides a disaster recovery solution for HP ProLiant servers. Embedded in the firmware of each supported tape device, DRTape uses HP tape drives to emulate bootable drive devices, similar to floppy and CD-ROM drives. When implemented, DRTape can provide for the complete recovery of server software and data. The recovery process requires the use of only one tape cartridge, in conjunction with the SmartStart CD, and can typically be completed in less than an hour. **NOTE: NOTE: DRTape does not support HP Smart Array Controllers. Please see "HP DRTape Compatibility Matrix" at: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/drtape/compatibility.html for further information regarding the minimum requirements for operating DRTape.
Rack-mount Tape Options Supported in HP StorageWorks 3U and 5U Rack-mount Kits, allowing customer to install up to 2 internal DLT or SDLT drives in a 3U rack-mount space or up to 4 internal DLT or SDLT drives in a 5U rack-mount space, respectively. Standard configuration for 3U Rack-mount Kit provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting one DLT or SDLT drive per bus. Standard configuration for 5U Rack-mount Kit provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting up to 2 DLT or SDLT drives per bus. Optional cable kit permits user to extend from two to four internal SCSI buses in 5U Rack-mount Kit, increasing the performance (data transfer rate) by allowing the customer to stream data to all four drives simultaneously. NOTE: Please refer to "Rackmount Tape Drive Kits" QuickSpecs for further information: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10854_div/10854_div.HTML.
Compatibility and Integration Testing
SDLT tape drives are fully supported and compatible with HP ProLiant and AlphaServer systems, HP StorageWorks DLT Tape Enclosures and Array, and controllers. HP thoroughly tests products with leading software and operating systems, including VERITAS Backup Exec and CA ARCserve, and TapeWare.
HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT)
The HP StorageWorks HP StorageWorks SDLT tape drive family is supported on HP's industry-leading diagnostic tool - HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT). L&TT is a single, convenient program that's a snap to install and simple to operate. L&TT's intuitive user interface eliminates the need for training and deploys in less than five minutes. This robust diagnostic tool is designed for both the experienced professional and the untrained administrator. It ensures product integrity through self-diagnostics and fast resolution to device concerns. Additional information on L&TT plus download information can be found at http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools.
