Features
Please read through and refer to this Owner's Manual to use your DA3N safely and adequately. It is recommended that you keep the unit's packaging available for future transportation needs.
●DA3N is a top-grade digital to analogue converter, which precisely converts the digital signal to the analogue signal and transports the converted signal to the amplifier without distortion. ●DA3N works perfectly with 5 kinds of digital sources. AES/EBU, COAX., TOSLINK and USB in addition to CEC original SUPERLINK. ●For SUPERLINK the BNC 4-cables connection is available in addition to the traditional D-sub 9 pin connection. Performance at SUPERLINK may improve when an external high-precision master clock is supplied. ●DA3N is equipped with a DAC chip, ES9008, which performs up to 24bit/ 192kHz music signal. ●The digital filter is switchable between standard FLAT and ringing-free PULSE. ●Balanced circuit design achieves the high quality signal path keeping the sound quality very natural and clear. ●Both Fixed and Variable outputs provide balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connections.

If using a cart, exercise caution when moving the cart/ unit combination to avoid injury from it tipping over. 13) Unplug the DA3N during lightning storms or when leaving it unused for extended periods of time. 14) Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the DA3N itself, its power-supply cord, or plug has been damaged in any way, when liquids have been spilled onto the DA3N, when foreign objects have fallen into the DA3N, when the DA3N has been exposed to rain or moisture, when the DA3N does not operate normally, or when the DA3N has been dropped.

Handling Precautions ❶ Connecting Other Devices Unplug the DA3N’s AC power cord from the outlet before connecting or disconnecting other devices. Exercise caution when handling the AC power cord. When disconnecting the AC cord from a socket, make sure you pull the plug, and not the cord itself. ❷ Turning Power On/Off Your system components should be turned on/off in the following order to avoid generating noise from your speakers and damaging the speakers themselves or other devices: Turning power on: Turn on the DA3N’s power first, before turning on the amplifier connected to the DA3N. Turning power off: Turn off the amplifier’s power first, before turning off the DA3N. ❸ Handle With Care Avoid exerting excessive force on the cabinet, the switch and the knob on the DA3N. ❹ Installation Use of an audio rack is recommended to maximize the sound quality and performance of the DA3N. Installation and use of the DA3N in the locations described below may cause deterioration in sound quality or malfunction: ● Locations exposed to direct sunlight, such as windowsills, and

other exceptionally warm locations, such as near heating appliances (surrounding temperature higher than 35 °C), or exceptionally cold locations (surrounding temperature lower than 10 °C), may prevent the DA3N from functioning adequately. ● Damp locations exceeding 90% humidity may cause the DA3N’s metal parts to rust, causing the unit to malfunction. ● Dusty locations may cause the DA3N to malfunction. The accumulation of dust inside the CD door may lower the performance of music signal reading. It may also cause contact failure of the switches, and/or noise. ● Otherwise, avoid installing the DA3N close to other transformers and electrical motors, so as to prevent the pickup of induction hum. Also, avoid mounting the unit on surfaces that may be affected by vibration. ❺ Avoid lightning strikes Disconnect the AC power cord from the AC outlet when there is a thunderstorm in your vicinity. ❻ Condensation When the DA3N is brought into a warm room when the exterior temperature is cold, or when the room temperature rises sharply from using a heater, condensation may form both inside and outside the unit, hampering its performance. If this happens, leave the DA3N unused in the room for 1 to 2 hours (depending on the amount of condensation), so as to bring the unit’s temperature closer to the room temperature. The condensation should go away gradually. ❼ Listening etiquette When adjusting the sound volume level, make sure you do not disturb other people and your neighborhood.

❶ POWER Button Press the POWER button to turn the power ON or OFF. The switch will light up in blue color when power is ON and "WAIT" is displayed. Approximately 6 seconds later the display will change to indicate the selected input, sampling frequency and options. ❷ OPT1 Input Connect to any digital audio device using an optical fiber cable with a mini round plug. This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 96kHz. ❸ USB1 Input Connect to a computer using a USB cable with a mini B plug. This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 96kHz but not 88.2kHz which is automatically upsampled to 96kHz. ❹ INPUT Selector Knob

Turn the INPUT knob clockwise or counterclockwise to select a digital input SL1(SUPERLINK / BNC), SL2(SUPERLINK / D-SUB), USB1(mini B type on front), USB2(B type), OPT1(optical mini round connector), OPT2(TOSLINK), OPT3(TOSLINK), AES(AES/EBU) or COAX(COAXIAL). The selected input is displayed at Ⓐ and the display shows the sampling frequency at Ⓑ once

DA3N detects the digital input signal. Note: Whenever changing the input "Unlock" is displayed in a flash before
DA3N User's Manual the sampling frequency is displayed. Note: Due to the input signal quality DA3N sometimes can not lock the signal properly resulting in having a noise in the music. In that case select the input again to reset the locking. Note: Whenever changing the input to or from the SUPERLINK the master clock source is also switched to external or internal to cause the CD Transport to stop the playback. Push the CD play button again to resume the playback. When changing the input, set the volume to lower level to avoid speaker damage! Each input signal varies the sound level and it might amplify the small noise to the big one. ❺ DISPLAY ⒶThe selected digital input is displayed.

ⒷThe selected input sampling frequency is displayed. When no or incompatible signal is there "Unlock" or "Unknown"(at USB) is displayed. When the volume knob is turned the level is displayed for 6 seconds.

ⒸThe selected digital filter type is displayed. "P" is displayed when "PULSE" is selected or "F" for "FLAT". You may change the digital filter by remote control. Refer to page 10 about the digital filter function. ⒹAn external master clock input is displayed. "M" is displayed when a SUPERLINK is selected and an external master clock 44.1kHz is connected. The same external master clock is supplied to the CD Transport via DA3N. ❻ REMOTE Sensor The remote sensor, which receives signals from the remote control unit, is located at the right side of display. Address the remote control unit to the sensor correctly. The remote control unit may malfunction if there should be any obstacles between the remote control unit and the remote sensor. ❼ VOLUME Knob The volume at headphone output and Variable output level can be

adjusted. Turn counterclockwise to minimize the volume to see VOL MUTE. Turn clockwise to see -90dB, -80dB, -72dB by each step. After -72dB one step goes by 6dB up to -54dB, and up to -42dB by 3dB. After -42dB volume will be increased by 1dB at one step. -90dB

Note: VOLUME woks both headphone and Variable outputs. Unused one should be switched off or disconnected. ❽ HEADPHONE Jack Headphone output jack for standard 6.3 mm plug. Note: For using a headphone with 3.5mm mini plug, purchase a 6.3mm conversion plug from a dealer. Before using your headphones for listening, turn the volume to the minimum and insert the headphones plug into the jack. Excessive sound pressure from the headphones may cause hearing loss to your ears.
Digital Filter Push the DF button on the remote control to select a digital filter FLAT or PULSE. ●The FLAT digital Filter is very common in digital audio items. The frequency response is almost perfect, but such filter cause "ringing" in the time domain. Some energy of a pulse signal is distributed in the time domain, before and after the pulse centre. Any ringing before the signal does not exist in nature. ●The PULSE filter avoids the problems in the time domain and thus has a very good response in the time domain. The frequency response of the PULSE digital filter shows a soft roll-off at high frequencies. This results in about -2dB at 20kHz with an input sampling frequency of 44.1kHz. For higher sampling frequencies the roll-off is irrelevant and the "PULSE" filter is the best choice. For 44.1kHz and 48kHz the better result may depend on the whole system as well as personal preferences.

PULSE
"SUPERLINK" Digital Signal Transmission System SUPERLINK is CEC’s proprietary digital signal transmission system that transports music signals and synchronization(clock) signals with separate cables. The SPDIF(Sony Philips Digital Inter Face) and AES/EBU(Audio Engineering Society/European Broadcasting Union) systems, commonly used in coaxial digital outputs and optical outputs, transmit both the music and clock signals through the same cable, and thus are prone to jitter effects caused by the signals interfering with each other. CEC’s SUPERLINK system transmits these signals separately with multiple cables, requiring no encoding/decoding process for data transmission. It minimizes deterioration of the music signal during transmission by using the clock signals from the D/A converter’s master clock generator to achieve complete synchronization. Each transmission path delivers/receives the following signals. MCK(Master Clock): The CD transport receives the master clock signal from the D/A converter through this line, and functions as a slave to the DA converter, enabling completely synchronized transportation of audio data. BCK(Bit Clock): Sends bitclock signals, required for digital data bit identification(e.g. sampling frequency) or signal readout, from the CD transport to the D/A converter. LRCK(L/R Clock): Sends left/right identification clock signals from the CD transport to the D/A converter. DATA: Sends audio data from the CD transport to the DA converter.

● VARIABLE Analog outputs You may adjust the analog output level of DA3N by turning the VOLUME knob. You may connect your loud speaker system with amplifier or power amplifier to VARIABLE output; DA3N works as pre-amplifier. Note: VOLUME woks both Variable and headphone outputs. It is recommended that unused headphones should be disconnected. ❶ RCA(Unbalanced) Standard RCA analogue signal output terminals for connecting a power amplifier. ❷ XLR(Balanced) Balanced analogue output using standard XLR terminals (1=GND, 2=Hot, 3=Cold). This should be the preferred connection since DA3N has been designed at fully balanced circuit.
● FIXED Analog outputs Connect to a pre-amplifier or amplifer with the volume control function. ❸ RCA(Unbalanced) Standard RCA analogue signal output terminals for connecting amplifier with the volume function. ❹ XLR(Balanced) Balanced analogue output using standard XLR terminals (1=GND, 2=Hot, 3=Cold). This should be the preferred connection since DA3N has been designed at fully balanced circuit.
● Digital Inputs ❺ COAX Connect to any digital audio device using a 75Ω coaxial cable. This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 192kHz.

This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 96kHz. ❽ AES/EBU Connect to any digital audio device using a 110Ω balanced XLR cable (1=GND, 2=Hot, 3=Cold). This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 192kHz. ❾ USB2 Connect to a computer using a USB cable with a B plug. This input supports sampling frequencies from 32kHz to 96kHz but not 88.2kHz which is automatically upsampled to 96kHz. ❿ MCK 44.1kHz 44.1kHz master clock input jack with a BNC connector. Connect to an external clock generator using a BNC (75Ω) cable. When the external master clock is supplied "M" is displayed. When DA3N is connected with a CD transport via SUPERLINK (

SL2), the CD transport is
under the same master clock control. Note: External master clock does not work at the other connections than SUPERLINK. SL1(SUPERLINK BNC) CEC’s proprietary SUPERLINK interconnection via BNC cables. There are four terminals: DATA, LRCK, MCK and BCK which should be connected accordingly via 75Ω coaxial BNC cables supplied with DA3N. You may connect with CEC TL1N and TL3N. When the other BNC cables are used, make sure to select high quality BNC cables with 75Ω. Sampling frequency is fixed at 44.1kHz. SL2(SUPERLINK D-SUB) CEC’s proprietary SUPERLINK interconnection via D-Sub-9pin cable. Connect a CD transport equipped with a D-Sub-9 pin SUPERLINK output like TL51 series. Note: Common D-Sub-9pin cable at computer world cannot be recommended. You may consult with your dealer for CEC recommended cable. AC LINE Connect the AC power cord supplied with DA3N.

How to connect ● SUPERLINK Connection / BNC 75Ω BNC cables are supplied with DA3N. Connect DA3N’s SUPERLINK terminals to the same marked terminals on the CD Transport (TL1N or TL3N) with 75Ω BNC cables. (DATA ⇔ DATA, BCK ⇔ BCK, LRCK ⇔ LRCK, MCK ⇔ MCK)
● SUPERLINK Connection / D-SUB-9 Connect DA3N's SUPERLINK D-Sub terminal to a compatible CDTransport (i.e. TL51X). This is the older SUPERLINK standard. Note that this connection is very sensitive to cable tolerances. You may ask your dealer for the CEC original D-Sub-9 cable, which provides better results.
●MCK 44.1kHz(Master Clock) Connection Connect an external clock generator using a 75Ω BNC cable. When SUPERLINK works, the external clock is activated.

● USB Connection Connect USB mini B or USB B plug to the DA3N’s USB terminal on front or rear panel. This way DA3N can be used as an external computer sound system. After connecting DA3N is automatically registered to the operating system as CEC DA3N USB1 or USB2, but you may have to set your computer to route the sound signals to DA3N instead of the internal sound system. DA3N works with Windows 7, Vista, XP, Mac OSX and Linux. In case of special operating system setups without automatic USB scanning or limited user rights, you may ask your system administrator.

Manual setting in your computer ・Windows: Go to CONTROL PANEL. Select AUDIO out of SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES. Select CEC DA3N USB1 or USB2 out of SOUND REPRODUCTION. ・Macintosh: Select SOUND at system environmental set-up. Select CEC DA3N USB1 or USB2 out of OUTPUT button. ● AES/EBU Connection Connect to the AES/EBU terminal of any compatible digital audio device with a 110Ω XLR cable.

Lower the volume before changing the input to avoid changing noise, sudden big sound, or headphone / speaker damage! ● Precautions on Using the Remote Control Unit ❶ When operating the remote control, point it towards the remote sensor on the DA3N’s front panel. Make sure nothing is blocking the front panel where the remote sensor is located. ❷ Avoid exposing the remote sensor on the front panel to direct sunlight or other light sources, as such exposure can cause malfunction. ❸ The remote control unit may malfunction when its batteries are running 17

low. Change the batteries to new ones of the same type if this seems to be the case. ● Battery Installation Remove the cover of the battery compartment. Insert the supplied two AAA batteries into the compartment. Make sure that the batteries are inserted with their positive (+) and negative (-) poles positioned correctly, and put the cover back on. ● Battery Replacement If the distance at which the remote control unit can be used to operate the DA3N seems to be decreasing, replace both batteries with new ones. ● Battery Precautions ❶ Never use different types of batteries together. Both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be used, but the two should not be used together. ❷ If you will not be using the remote control unit for an extended period of time (more than a month), remove the batteries to prevent leakage. ❸ If the batteries leak, use a cloth to wipe away the liquid inside the battery compartment and replace the batteries with new ones. ❹ Do not heat or disassemble batteries, and never dispose of old batteries by throwing them in a fire. Dispose of batteries following laws in the local area
Operation ●Basic Operation ❶ Power on DA3N and CD transport or computer connected to the DA3N. "WAIT" is displayed and about 6 seconds later current functions are displayed then DA3N can be operated.
❷ After the volume is minimized on DA3N or amplifier, power on the amplifier. ❸ Turn the INPUT selector or press the remote button to select an input out of the connected terminals. The selected input is displayed at Ⓐ. If no connected input is selected "Unlock" or "Unknown" (USB) is displayed at Ⓑ .

❹ After the sampling frequency is displayed, start the playback of the selected digital audio device. ❺ Increse the volume. ❻ Select a digital filter FLAT or PULSE. FLAT features liner frequency up to 20kHz. When selecting FLAT "F" is displayed at Ⓒ. PULSE features soft treble roll off and ringing free playback resulting in wider sound stage and dynamic sound. During PULSE "P" is displayed.
●SUPERLINK(BNC or D-SUB 9) Operation ❼ When CD transport is connected with DA3N via SUPERLINK, external 44.1kHz master clock can be used. When the master clock is linked, "M" is displayed at Ⓓ .

Maintenance ● If the surface of the DA3N case becomes soiled, wipe with a soft cloth or use diluted neutral cleaning liquid. Be sure to remove any fluid completely. Do not use thinner, benzene, alcohol, chemical cloths or bleaching agents as these may damage the surface of the DA3N case. Also avoid using aerosol insecticides near the unit.

Troubleshooting If you suspect a malfunction in the unit, please check the following chart before calling your dealer. ● No power Check the connection at the both ends of the AC power cord. Make sure there is power at the wall outlet. Note: Turning the power on/off repeatedly may cause this. Wait for 5 seconds before turning the power on again. ● No sound Check the connection from the external sources, e.g. CD transport. Check the operation of the external sources, e.g. CD transport. Check the connection to the amplifier, speakers or headphones. Check whether the matching input is selected. Check the position of the input selector on the amplifier. If Variable output is connected, check VOLUME position. ● Hum noise or distortion Check if the plugs are connected correctly. Make sure correct cable is used in the specific direction. ● Interference on the tuner The tuner is too close to the DA3N. Install the DA3N away from it or turn off the tuner’s power. ● Unresponsive to remote control Point the remote control towards the remote sensor on the front panel. Remove any objects blocking the sensor. Use the remote control unit at a shorter distance from the DA3N. Replace the batteries in the remote control unit with new ones. ● DA3N contains a microcomputer that can malfunction due to the external noise or interference. If this seems to be the case, turn the unit off and wait for a short while before turning it back on and trying again.
