Dahl Engineering is a specialised business enterprise that offers development, safety tests and production of various special products and equipment for private cars, vans, buses, racing cars, vehicles for the disabled, ambulances, police cars, military vehicles as well as aids and appliances for people with disabilities. In 2005 Dahl Engineering erected Denmark’s only test facility for dynamic tests (crash tests), a hydraulic tensile testing facility, a prototype workshop and production facilities for research, product development and manufacture. In 2006 and 2011 the company expanded again. Certification tests of products can be carried out in co-operation with recognised bodies such as TÜV Rheinland in Germany in accordance with EU directives and international safety standards in the area. New areas of focus for safety Development with regard to motor vehicle safety never stands still, and new themes continue to appear all the time. Many of today’s wheelchairs and aids and appliances for handicapped persons are unable to cope with the loads they are subjected to during a road traffic accident. For wheelchair users transported by vehicle, this represents a considerable safety risk that until recently has been the subject of only cursory interest. Following the introduction of statutory requirements with regard to certified safety belts for wheelchair users in vehicles, the issue of the integrity of the wheelchair and the wheelchair tie downs during a road traffic accident has now moved onto the safety agenda. Another area of increased focus involves delivery vans. A crash test of a goods partition wall can determine whether its construction and method of fitting is adequate such that the driver will not be hit by flying packages during an accident. As a supplier of components we are also able to offer close cooperation with regard to the development and testing/certification of components in the unit in which they are to be used. Dahl Engineering has specialised in the supply of certified equipment that is tested such that international safety standards and EU safety requirements in motor vehicles are satisfied. This applies regardless of whether the products are for disabled or non-disabled use – where this is possible – with due consideration of the design and function of the aid and appliance concerned. 4 5 Dahl Docking System Easy to operate Revolutionary Docking System will set new standards for flexibility and safety! With the lap belt mounted on the wheelchair, the various special safety belts that are used to secure the wheelchair user to the floor become redundant. This results in an uncluttered floor with plenty of space to manoeuvre the wheelchair into the docking station. Mounting the lap belt on the wheelchair, thus avoiding the need to install it in the floor (which is the most common solution), provides hitherto unseen flexibility. If a wheelchair has an integrated lap belt, the user only has to be able to pull the shoulder belt down to the lap belt and secure it once the wheelchair is locked into the docking station. We are happy to specify which wheelchairs have been tested and certified with integrated safety belts. Should your wheelchair not be among the certified models, we would be happy to work with the wheelchair manufacturer in question on the development of a solution. For wheelchairs that are not certified with integrated safety belts, we have a wide range of ISO certified safety belts for installation in the traditional manner in the floor of the vehicle. Art. no.: 500562 - Dahl Docking System Dahl Engineering’s newly developed electric Docking System provides a hitherto unseen flexibility and safety for wheelchair users. The Docking System is the first system on the market to be tested and TÜV certified in accordance with EU safety requirements for cars (M1) with an electric wheelchair which has a weight of 150 kg and integrated lap belt. In testing, the docking station has proved to be so strong that it can withstand a load corresponding to a wheelchair weight of more than 200 kg + passenger provided that the safety belt is installed in the traditional manner in the floor of the vehicle. A lock plate and a spacer must be fitted under the wheelchair. Road safety should be for everyone – also for wheelchair users The safety standards for restraint equipment for wheelchairs are not as strict as the safety requirements for other equipment used in motor vehicles. According to the current ISO standard, restraint equipment only has to be able to withstand the load from a wheelchair with a weight of 85 kg. At Dahl Engineering, we think that these requirements are inadequate. What is the use in using a safety belt if a wheelchair weighs more than 85 kg and the wheelchair and its passenger are thrown through the vehicle because the restraint equipment and anchorage points in the vehicle’s bodywork are torn loose during a collision? We also believe that docking stations should be tested with the wheelchairs with which they are to be used. Therefore we have developed and tested retrofit able seat belt anchorage kits consisting of for example a height adjuster for the shoulder belt and vehicle specific reinforcing brackets that can be placed inside the vehicles side and under the floor. Dahl Engineering was the first to meet, the EU-framework directive 2007/46 annex 3 – for wheelchair accessible vehicles. Based on the many tests, TÜV approval has been obtained for the fitting of our floor pockets and rails in more than 30 vehicles. Therefore Dahl Engineerings 4 point wheelchair restraints is at the very forefront of legislative safety requirements for wheelchair users in motor vehicles, within the EU and globally. The tie down retractors are equipped with dual sided knobs and robust metal boots with a nice silver finish coating. The new automatic 3 point occupant restraint system makes it much easier and quicker to buckle up the wheelchair user, than when using traditional 3 point occupant restraints. With the 175 mm height adjuster for the shoulder belt fitted - the occupant restraint can quickly be adjusted to offer maximum safety and comfort for children as well as adults. We offer our customers a cooperation where we test conversions in which our products are being used, so that the converted vehicle meets applicable safety requirements. Our 4 points wheelchair restraints are tested to meet standard ISO 105242 as well as standard 7176-19 with actual wheelchairs. Fatigue test according to TÜV Merkblatt 751 is carried out on a converted VW caddy with a lowered floor. The purpose of the test is to determine if the vehicles load carrying components will crack or collapse under the stresses it will be exposed to during years of use. The converted vehicle body was exposed to 150.000 test cycles. Based on all the tests carried out in cooperation with Dahl Engineering the vehicle converter obtained a “letter of no objection” from Volkswagen for the vehicle conversion based on a VW Caddy. The special floor pockets and heavy duty rails for our 4 point wheelchair restraints are tested according to ECE Regulation R14. Many of the tested vehicles were able to withstand loads equivalent to a wheelchair weighing 200 kg + user. The safety belt buckles are fitted on the rear tie down retractors and are brought up to a comfortable height right behind the wheelchair. With a DAHL HYBRID SEAT™ fitted in a minibus or a taxicab, the owner can provide safe and flexible transport to schools, nurseries, residential homes and institutions, etc., irrespective of the order in which these journeys are carried out during the day. As a result, drivers do not have to spend valuable time returning to base to pick up and install child safety seats before picking up children and then have to spend more time removing and returning the seats again after use. It saves time and lives. The 3 point belt is not enough! Crash tests show that a child that is secured with a seatbelt designed for an adult or in child seat that does not fit the height and weight of the child is at risk of: · not being retained by the belt and being thrown violently through the cab during a collision. · the belt sliding upwards and exerts its force on the child’s stomach and chest region In both scenarios the child is at risk of suffering debilitating or fatal injuries. Stricter requirements for securing children in cars This is why the EU introduced stricter legislation for the securing of children in 2006. The new regulations stipulate that children must be secured in an ECE44 certified child safety seat that matches the weight and height of the child concerned. Non-compliance incurs both a fine and penalty points on one’s driving licence. For taxies and buses it has proven to be a major challenge, as it has not hitherto been practically possible to carry and handle the many loose child safety seats. For example it is not been practicable to drive around with loose child safety seats for 15 children at all times. Storing the child safety seats also takes up a lot of space, when not in use. It is too time-consuming to rearrange and fit the child seats every time they are needed. As a result, children are either not secured at all or are secured by means of a safety belt system that tests have proven does not provide effective protection during a collision. But now the solution is here Crash tests show that a child that is secured with a normal 3 point seatbelt designed for an adult is at risk of suffering debilitating or fatal injuries. As in this test the child is at risk of sliding under the seatbelt resulting in the belt exerting its force of several hundred kilograms on the stomach and chest. 26 The hybrid seat solves three practical problems simultaneously with regard to safety, space and time. The hybrid seat can be converted from a child seat to a seat for an adult passenger, or vice versa, within the space of just 3 seconds. Dahl Engineering is the first and only firm that is able to offer ECE 44/04 tested seats that have an integrated child safety seat and which are both removable and moveable to all seating positions in a minibus. Patented seat with integrated child safety seat solves the problem Now there is an alternative to using the vehicles normal 3 point seat belts that is designed for adults or driving around with loose child safety seats. Dahl Engineering has developed a hybrid seat - DAHL HYBRID SEAT™, which can be used by children from the age of 9 months, as well as by adults. We have patented the seat, which is built up around an ultra-compact design, which has made it possible to integrate a child seat in a seat designed for an adult. Hybrid seat can turn ordinary seats in vans and mini buses etc. unnecessary because the seat can be converted from a seat for an adult passenger to an ECE 44/04 approved child seat, or vice versa, within the space of just 3 seconds. Dahl Hybrid Seat™ saves time and lives With a DAHL HYBRID SEAT™ fitted in a minibus or a taxicab, the owner can provide safe and flexible transport to schools, nurseries, residential homes and institutions, etc., irrespective of the order in which these journeys are carried out during the day. As a result, drivers do not have to spend valuable time returning to base to pick up and install child safety seats before picking up children and then have to spend more time removing and returning the seats again after use. The new seat fits a newly developed, robust rail system that can be installed in the vehicle so that the seat can be moved around in the vehicle or easily removed if space is needed for a wheelchair, for example. The new seat solves at least three practical problems concerning the transport of children in minibuses: 1. The safety aspect related to children being incorrectly secured. 2. What to do with the child seats when they are not being used. 3. The relatively large amount of time spent fitting and removing a child safety seat. 27 Multi-seat - 4 in one Safety First The hybrid seat meets the safety requirements for seats for both adults and children in three ECE 44/04 groups The DAHL HYBRID SEAT™ satisfies the EU’s strictest requirements for seats in passenger cars (M1). Furthermore, the seat also lives up to ECE regulation 44/04 for child seats in Groups 1, 2 and 3*. In other words, the Hybrid seat can be used to secure children from an age of approximately 9 months and up to a size where they no longer need to be secured in a child safety seat whilst being transported. *ECE 44/04 group classification of children: Group 1: from 9 - 18 kg Group 2: from 15 - 25 kg Group 3: from 22 - 36 kg The DAHL HYBRID SEAT™ has a built-in 3-point seatbelt for adults and older children, and a 5-point harness for younger children. Please enquire with regard to the current range. 28 29 Comfort Seat™ Base consoles/Accessories for Hybrid Seat & Comfort Seat Seat shown with QFC system With the Quick Fitting Console (QFC) it is no longer necessary to mount recessed floor rails in the floor of the vehicle in order to install removable seats in taxis or vehicles for the disabled. With Dahl’s new QFC you can remove and fit a seat in seconds. The seat is released without the use of tools by lifting a release lever at the front edge of the console. When the seat has been removed, only the compact base plate can be seen, which is mounted directly on the original floor of the vehicle. A variant without integrated child safety seat is also available under the name COMFORT SEAT™. The comfort seat is the only seat on the market for minibuses with a built-in 3-point seatbelt and designed with extra lateral support and upholstery springs in both the seat cushion and back. The comfort seat thus has the same level of comfort as passenger car seats. Normally the seat and back in minibuses are upholstered on metal or plywood sheets. Swivelling console and armrest are available as optional extras. The seat is available with a base plate which is suitable for installation in Dahl heavy duty floor rail system or for fixed fitting in the Dahl Low Floor System. Wheels can be mounted on the legs so that the seats can be easily manoeuvred when moving them around or taking them out of the vehicle. Control lever for the swivelling console It is also possible to save space by pushing the seats together when not in use. Art. no. 500665 Legs 270 mm In standard configuration, the Flexus Seat is equipped with a fold-up seat and can, when fitted with a swivelling console, be folded up and rotated into position against the side of the vehicle. This enables space for e.g. wheelchair users to be made available quickly and easily. Wheel arch brackets are available. 32 Legs are available in two heights – 245 mm and 270 mm – with or without floor rail fittings. 33 Dahl Low floor System The installation principle is illustrated without the plywood sheet fitted. When seats are installed in the traditional manner, with an aluminium floor, on top of the floor of the vehicle, approximately 4 cm of the vehicle’s internal clearance height will be lost. This means that passengers – in particular wheelchair users – may not have sufficient headroom in some vehicles. Dahl Engineering has therefore developed a new system for anchoring seats in vehicles in which the ceiling height, in particular, is important with regard to the practicality of the vehicle. The Low Floor System is illustrated with a VW Transporter/Caravelle T5 vehicle floor, but the system is also available for vehicles. Kits for more vehicles are under development/testing. The extremely simple installation principle is based on the seats being bolted to seat anchorage plates made from high tensile steel, which are in turn secured to the vehicle by means of specially adapted reinforcement components under the vehicle floor. The seat anchorage plates are countersunk in a thin plywood sheet in a pre-cut hole. Another plywood sheet is placed on top with the floor covering and pre-drilled holes for the bolts onto which the seats are eventually secured. The seat anchorage plate is secured by means of bolts through the floor of the vehicle. The holes have a spacing of 2” (approx. 5 cm), which means that it is easy to choose another installation position for the seats if it is discovered that one or more seats should be installed at another spacing to suit the purpose. At the same time, it is also possible to choose between different positions for the seats, even though the holes are already drilled in the floor of the vehicle. The installation work thus becomes much more straightforward due to the fact that the amount of time consumed and the risk of mistakes are significantly reduced, for example in connection with the welding of incorrectly drilled holes.
