DANISH ROYAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA 2015
WHY SOUTH AFRICA? South Africa is the 33rd largest economy in the world and a growing market for Danish exporters. With roughly 5 million people that have a higher purchasing power than the average Dane, it is the largest market for Denmark in Africa. South Africa has experienced rapid change over the past decades, and is today one of the most interesting emerging economies; an upper middle-income country with one of the largest economies in Africa. South Africa is politically stable, has sound institutions, a world-class financial sector, and ranks highest in Africa on the ‘Ease of Doing Business’-Index. Over the last decade, South Africa’s GDP per capita (PPP) has risen significantly and is now higher than China’s at close to $13,000 according to the World Bank. Often called “The Gateway to Africa”, South Africa’s well-developed infra structure makes it an obvious hub for regional activities. Home to 4,5% of the continent’s population, South Africa produces 20% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP, and holds a significant proportion of the world’s mineral production. The country came out of the financial crisis relatively well, but has recently experienced lower growth rates. South Africa faces a number of structural challenges, which the Government is seeking to address with large-scale infrastructure investments, combined with efforts to create jobs and develop skills in the work force. The situation calls for innovative solutions, and as such provides good opportunities for Danish know-how, products and services in a variety of sectors. Through many years of support, Denmark has established a solid Danish-South African partnership creating a strong platform for Danish companies to increase trade and exports. The Royal Visit presents an excellent opportunity to further promote Danish competences, establish networks and partnerships, and create new business and exports.
SECTOR FOCUS The Royal Visit will focus on promoting Danish exports, especially within key sectors where Danish know-how, products and services meet South African* demands and challenges. Activities, seminars and events during the visit will focus on high potential sectors, and will primarily take place under the below headlines. However, companies operating within other sectors are also welcome to participate. ENERGY Energy efficiency and renewable energy (wind, biogas & solar) WATER & ENVIRONMENT Water management and water technologies AGRICULTURE & FOOD Food, livestock, crops, machinery & biomass *T he program for the Royal Visit will additionally offer an Add-On event focusing on the Angolan market for all three focus sectors, where participants will have the possibility to meet with high-level stakeholders from Angola.

DANISH ROYAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA 2015
ENERGY Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Regular power shortages are currently slowing down growth in South Africa, which Government is seeking to address by reinvesting in the country’s energy infrastructure. South Africa has ambitious climate and energy policies and is one of the world’s most attractive countries for investing in renewable energy. South Africa wishes to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and aims to increase the clean energy portion of the national energy mix to 30% by 2025. The South African Government has approved renewable energy projects totaling 5,243 MW under 4 bid windows since 2011, and intends to procure an additional 6,300 MW in future tenders with a focus on wind, solar, bio-energy and hydro-power. Denmark has supported the introduction of renewable energy in South Africa for a long time – including support to developing the regulatory framework, pilot wind farms and by mapping of wind resources – for the South African Wind Atlas (WASA). The partnership between Denmark and South Africa is ongoing with current support to capacity building, grid connection, energy efficiency and support to climate change goals. Danish companies are today well-represented in the South African energy sector, but more opportunities exist, including for a range of service providers and sub suppliers. Danish companies will be able to enjoy the benefits of a well-established strategic government-to-government partnership on renewable energy. A Designated Track for Wind On 4 to 5 November, Cape Town is the scene of the annual African wind energy conference and expo, the WINDABA, which gathers key stakeholders from all over the world. Wind sector participants in the business delegation therefore have the opportunity to visit the WINDABA expo. Furthermore, companies can choose to exhibit at the WINDABA, via one of the options presented in the box.
WATER Water and Environment Denmark and South Africa will enter into a strategic partnership within the water and environment sector this year, seeking to pave the way for Danish know-how and competences and creating public-private partnership opportunities. South Africa is a water scarce country and is challenged by poorly maintained infrastructure, pollution, inefficiency (almost 40% of water is lost), and a shortage of skills in water resource management at local levels. At the same time, it is a constitutional right to have access to potable water for the country’s 54 million citizens. Government is therefore planning for infrastructure investments (50 billion DKK over the next three years alone) and is seeking smart solutions to managing water resources (including waste water management, groundwater locating and extraction, pipeline management) more efficiently in addition to increasing the purification of water. Not only in water intensive industries, such as the mining sector and the agricultural sector, is there a potential for introducing new ways to minimize water consumption and increase energy efficiency, but also in other sectors, such as the hospitality and the retail sectors, is there a need for more efficient management of water and energy resources. Danish companies have a lot of relevant expertise in this field. The export promotion will provide an excellent platform for liaising with South African stakeholders and for advancing Danish solutions encompassing the entire water cycle. Furthermore, the expected formalisation of a Danish-South African strategic government partnership in the sector will provide an ideal framework for developing contacts and business opportunities in South Africa.

AGRICULTURE & FOOD Livestock, Sanitation, Nutrition and Feed, Plant Growing, Crops, Biomass & Machinery The agricultural sector of South Africa is highly developed and dominated by large commercial farms that supply the bulk of the food processing industries in South Africa, as well as in other African countries, which rely heavily on South Africa for food imports. Due to the country’s varied climate, many different crops are grown – wheat and maize being the largest. Wine and various horticultural products are exported in great quantities, mostly to Europe. Currently, only 12% of the surface area can be used for crop production, and new technologies improving land usage and durability of crops are of great interest. The livestock sector contributes almost 50% of agricultural output, and expects an overall 7% growth rate. The red meat industry is one of the most important growing industries in the South African agricultural sector. Livestock enhancement, utilisation of enzymes and genetic expertise will play an ever-increasing role. The dairy sector is also expected to grow. Annual milk production and demand is increasing, handin-hand with the population growth. There is a significant focus on butter, UHT, flavoured milk, yoghurts and pre-packed cheese products. South Africa also has a nearly fully utilised fishery sector that is considered to be one of the leaders in the ecosystem approach for fisheries management. The South African agro-industry is under increasing international interest, and has great potential for Danish expertise, equipment and technologies. Food, Beverage, Food Tech and Confectionery Food production is South Africa’s largest manufacturing sector, totalling annual income over 120 billion DKK, and the whole industry is expecting a significant value growth. South Africa is predicted to have 20-40% increase in food consumption by 2050 in favour of protein-based food products, higher oil and fat content foods, all convenience foods and dairy products. The food sector is led by world-class retail chains with big supermarkets and a focus on processed food. Large retailers compete with conventional and specialty supermarkets, natural foods stores, discount warehouses, smaller specialty stores, farmers’ markets, and restaurants. The South African retail sector stretches into the continent, and is therefore an opportunity for export throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa holds great potential as a growth market for Danish food and food technology exports. High value opportunities lie in an uncompetitive packaging industry, a local confectionery market that is fast losing its share to imports, and within meat and dairy products and food processing technologies, just to mention a few. The Royal Visit presents an opportunity to gain the necessary understanding of local preferences and establish networks and access to the main retail chains.
