m2fx CASE STUDY Dark Fiber Africa Overhead view Location: Customer Location Pretoria South Africa Dark Fiber Africa - Case Study m2fx and Plumett. Persequer Park, Pretoria. Purpose of Project Date: July 2012 OSP Installer: Greenstone Networks Pty Ltd Synopsis: To install a pre-terminated 12 core Miniflex™ into 8mm m2fx microduct and 8mm Duraline (12 way duct). Run Lengths: 240m Specialist Equipment: Plumett Ultimaz ® V20-01 Benefits: Achieved 70% reduction in installation costs. Metropolitan wide DAS network enabled with minimum highway disruption. Products Used: Pushable Fiber Cable Miniflex™ 3mm 12F Fiber Cable (300m) (G652D), pre-terminated with 12 x1.2m LC/PC tight buffered pigtails ready for connection onto a preinstalled patch panel. To prove the ease of installation, robustness and superior performance of the m2fx pre terminated Pushable Fibre System to existing products. The main focus of the project was to investigate cost savings, both in the speed of deployment and the reduced requirement for highly skilled workers on site. The Problem To pass a 12 core fiber cable from a communications room to a junction hand hole 240 meters away and connect to the fiber network. The problem was to pass the 12 core pre-connectorized Pushable Fibre cable from the communications room to the hand hole in the most cost effective and easiest way possible, with minimum use of highly skilled engineers on site. No ducting existed inside the premises from the Krone patch panel to the external duct, therefore, that had to be installed. The site had a number of sharp bends inside the premises which would need to be negotiated by the new duct, part of the test was to assess whether the installation of the duct could be done with as little trouble as possible. There were also a number of hand holes that needed to be negotiated as well as the change in the duct type along the route to the end point. The Solution The solution was to install 8mm m2fx Miniflex™ microduct internally and connect up to the 8mm Duraline (12 way duct). The 8mm m2fx Miniflex™ microduct was attached directly to the inside of the building without the need for cable trays or bosal pipes and was immediately ready for the routing of the Pushable Fiber Cable. Pre-connectorized Miniflex™ 3mm, 12 core, Pushable Fibre Cable then utilized a small Plumett Ultimaz v20-01 pusher/blowing machine powered by a handheld drill to push the un-terminated end of the cable along the duct. The pre-connectorized end of the miniflex™ pushable cable arrived on site ready to be plugged into the Krone patch panel. Install 8mm m2fx Miniflex™ microduct internally and connect up to the 8mm Duraline (12 way duct) 2. Float the Miniflex™ pushable micro-cable from the communications room to the Dark Fiber Africa hand holes with a Plumett Ultimaz (V20-01) machine. 3. Float all the excess Miniflex™ pushable micro-cable to the hand holes. 4. Install pre-terminated cable and pig-tails into Krone patch panel. 5. Test installation with EXFO FTB200 ODR The Method Plumet UltimaZ®-V20-01 The push/float was approximately 240m in total length and the fiber cable was 310 m in length allowing for approximately 70m of slack to be left in the hand holes. Approximately 40metres of 8mm m2fx microduct was used internally before being connected to Duraline 8/5mm (12 way) duct externally. Once the push/float had commenced it took no longer than 20 minutes, at an average speed of 30m/min, to install the cable from end to end. It was demonstrated that the speed could be increased to 60m/min.  The process was deliberately brought to a halt at the midway point and resumed to ensure that this was within capabilities. The pre connectorized ends were then installed in to the patch panel, taking about 15 minutes and was totally compatible. Finally a directional test was made from the panel with an EXFO FTB200 ODTR and no faults were found. Pre-Terminated Miniflex cable as delivered Plumett Review by Pieter Van Graan • 310m of cable was blown by the Ultimaz into 240m of duct, the remainder was left in the hand holes as slack. • The average installation speed was about 30m/min, and it was demonstrated that the speed could be increased to 60m/min. • The floating was stopped half way through and was resumed without any problems. • Total floating  time was about 20 minutes. • The route was mostly uphill. • It was a smooth operation without any hiccups. The complete Miniflex pre- terminated solution Core Telecom Systems Partnered with m2fx (888) 375-8826 www.coretelecomnet m2fx CASE STUDY The Completed Solution. Pigtails installed into Panel Dark Fibre Africa Review  by Jaques Van Loggerenburg of DFA • Very easy to install the cable, no expensive floating equipment required. • The Miniflex™ pushable micro-cable is re connectorized at one end so there is no requirement for splicing inside the clients premises. • 8mm m2fx microduct 100% compatible with existing DFA 8/5mm access ducts with via a reducer connector. • Cost of access can be reduced significantly as the indoor 8mm m2fx microduct can be installed without expensive cable trays and bosal pipes. • Slack can be installed in the mini hand holes without additional protection because of the protection already offered by the Miniflex™ system. Panel Installed to Cabinet • Slack stored at the Fibre Distribution point (FDP) inside the Metro Standard/Large hand hole fits into the 5/3mm microduct. (Whose microduct?) • Existing fibre entry ports can be used on the FDP closure (Tyco FISTGCO2-F) • Cable can be manufactured with both G652D and G657A1 fire type. • The product enables quicker installation at a reduced price. Future Vision To produce and assemble a pre-loaded standard cabinet for DFA by m2fx and Mustek, including all internal equipment. This will also include a ready installed Pre-Terminated panel with the required length of Miniflex™ pushable micro-cable ready to be floated to the DFA street hand hole.
