Fast, flexible and space efficient MTP jumper cables provide a high density link between HUBER+SUHNER optical distribution racks in the MDA and modules or ruggedised fan-outs mounted in the EDA. The compact and flexible cable design improves handling and in conjunction with bend-optimised fiber, provides a significantly reduced bend radius. This simplifies the installation process and greatly reduces the space consumption within fiber containment and equipment cabinets. MTP link assemblies longer than 10 m are supplied on a packaging reel which allows the cable to be directly installed without special equipment or re-reeling on site. Packing density without limitations In high density applications where access to the MTP connector is limited or obscured, HUBER+SUHNER recommends using a retrofittable «push-pull» clip with a built-in extension finger at the rear (see page 55).

Ultralite MTP®–LC, splice–LC and LC–LC fan-outs Characteristics • Ready to use «plug & play» system • Small diameter cable for easy handling and routing • Compact furcation housing with snap-fit mounting • Low smoke and free of halogen (LSFH™) • MTP high-performance connectivity • All fiber types available • 12 fibers or 24 fibers per assembly • Flexible protection sleeve to aid the installation process and protect tails and connectors • Compact Ø 3 mm cable for 12 fibers for maximum space efficiency (Ø 3.6 mm for 24 fibers) • Flexible cable construction for easy handling and routing • Fast traceability with colour coded jacket (OM4 heather violet, OM3 aqua, SM yellow) • Reduced cable clutter inside equipment racks • Fast identification with numbered tails • Secure fixation with slotted gland See also: Cabling accessories page 54 SAN management page 58 Reduced cable clutter and improved equipment airflow Ruggedised fan-outs provide either a flexible transition from MTP connectivity to standard LC connectors, LC connectors to LC connectors or LC connectors to open for splicing. They generally make the final connection to active equipment ports. A standard 1 m tail length can be used as a generic solution for all 19 inch horizontal blades. Ruggedised fan-outs offer a much cleaner presentation of fibers in high density switching environments and because of their compact size and construction, they reduce the possibility of blocking airflow to equipment. Short length assemblies (for direct connections to equipment) are configured with a male MTP connector because they are connected to a female backbone/horizontal cable. However, in some cases, it may be preferable to eliminate this connection and harness a longer assembly directly back to the MDA. In this case, a female MTP connector is used to correspond with the male connector positioned in the MDA. Long length assemblies reduce some of the overall flexibility but offer the user increased headroom across the complete link. The integrated mounting slot facilitates easy and robust fixation of the furcation housing either under or to one side of the equipment.

Highest possible density from a cable system The MTP SMARTLINE optipack cable system from HUBER+SUHNER is purpose made for high density backbone/horizontal connections between racks or zones in the data center. The cables are constructed with either 12 fiber sub-unitised ruggedised bundles or, on demand, 24 fiber depending on the MTP connector that is applied. This construction of cable is extremely strong because each sub-unitised bundle is strain-relieved with kevlar and then jacketed. The sub-units are not only strong but extremely flexible too and this is an advantage when connecting this type of cable system directly to multi-fiber transceivers in equipment racks. The MTP SMARTLINE optipack also benefits from an integrated ripcord that can be used to lengthen the furcation length on-site. This can be a useful function depending on the type of rack and the height position of the equipment being connected.

Highest possible density from a cable system The MTP MASTERLINE cable system from HUBER+SUHNER is purpose made for high density backbone/horizontal connections between racks or zones in the data center. Due to the extremely compact micro cable design, this cable system is at least 40 % more space efficient than conventional cable systems. In conjunction with bend-optimised fibers, the MTP MASTERLINE is flexible and well-suited to tight working conditions and rack spaces. In addition to high-performance fiber types, the MTP MASTERLINE system benefits from MTP elite connectivity across the range. All cable systems are supplied on robust plastic (zero debris) cable reels which not only prevent contamination of equipment but also speed up and simplify the installation process dramatically. Furcation tails are protected with a flexible pulling sleeve which aids installation and prevents any on-site damage to connections. The protection sleeve also offers long-term protection in cases where the MASTERLINE is stored under computer floors prior to use. For advice on how to install MASTERLINE systems into our HUBER+SUHNER fiber management portfolio or advice on different tail length possibilities, please contact your local HUBER+SUHNER representative.

LC patch cords Characteristics • 1.8 mm duplex cable for LC-Classic and 2.1 mm for LC-XD uniboot • Low smoke and free of halogen (LSFH™) • Multimode OM4, OM3 and singlemode fiber • Simple polarity flipping with duplex clips • Colour coded connector shrouds (OM4 heather violet, OM3 aqua, SM yellow) • Fast patching with push-pull LC technology • Unlimited access with LC-XD • Super low-loss OM4 performance Excellence in connectivity HUBER+SUHNER patch cords are manufactured with the highest quality materials and to the strictest of manufacturing processes. Our aim is to produce patch cords that add value to our customers either by reducing the cable size, enhancing performance or improving the overall usability. In high density applications, customers can choose the innovative LC-XD connector that reduces cable bulk and speeds up the patching and re-patching process. Our unique «push-pull» LC design was the first major step in revolutionising the standard LC. With this major advancement, customers no longer need to limit their cabling designs to the restrictions of standard connectivity.
LC-XD uniboot The LC-XD uniboot is designed to be used for the highest packing density. The connector has an innovative push-pull mechanism which allows efficient handling even in the smallest of spaces. Another feature is the ability of adjusting polarity without having to use any tools.
LC-Classic The LC classic connector from HUBER+SUHNER is on the industry standard simplex or duplex LC which has a clip on the top face of the shroud for engaging the connector key mechanism. Unlike the XD type, the classic requires full finger access to the clip and subsequently is not optimised for environments where high packing density is required.

uses reverse pair positioning, so an uneven number of crosses in the cabling produces correct polarity. • Reverse pair positioning Fiber 1 – Fiber 2 Fiber 2 – Fiber 1 Fiber 3 – Fiber 4 etc.
an even number of crosses is produced.
The standard polarity of patch cords supplied by HUBER+SUHNER is «A–B/B–A» because although the cable is straight, the position of the fibers in the duplex connector is different at each end. When designing an array based link using 12-fiber ribbon cables, it is important to note that a pair-wise flip has to be integrated at one end of the link. However, if the link is designed using the HUBER+SUHNER cross-connect racks then it will not be necessary to use two different types of patch cords. In this instance, a A–B/B–A patch cord can be used everywhere (i.e. within the crossconnect rack and also at each end of the link). Please contact HUBER+SUHNER if you require A–A/B–B patch cords.

Upgrading to 40G and 100G data rates MTP patch cords are used as an upgrade path from 1G and 10G legacy systems to 40G and 100G data rates. The female to male gender configuration allows the MTP patch cord to be connected at one end to active equipment (female connector) and at the other end (male connector) to a pre-existing patch panel or transition module. By removing the pre-existing MTP to LC module and replacing it with a MTP to MTP transition module, the pre-existing backbone cable systems can be utilised. 1G and 10G systems generally use a 12 fiber MTP cable system transitioning to LC connectivity at the front of the panel. However, 40G and 100G links require an 8 fiber and 20 fiber MTP connector respectively. The MTP transition module allows 12 fiber MTP links to be transitioned to either 8 fiber of 20 fiber MTPs within the module. For lengths longer than 10 m, patch cords are packaged on an installed-ready reel. For longer length equipment to equipment links, customers should choose an MTP link assembly as shown on page 12.

Highest packing density for evolving data centers The CDR (Cable Distribution Rack) is a purpose-built high density fiber management rack which serves as a central cross-connect in the main distribution area of data centers. With a footprint depth of only 300 mm, the CDR is fully modular and scalable up to 1620 ports (3240 fibers) using LC connectivity and 1080 ports (25 920 fibers) using MTP connectivity . Users can benefit from a C-shaped construction where all internal sub-elements are completely installable and accessible from the front side. This important feature means that CDRs can be placed back-to-back on a single floor tile or alternatively against an unused wall for minimal space consumption. Designed to match your data center The CDR has been designed to match equipment cabinets in the datacenter and provide a seamless visual transition from passive racks to active racks. The CDR’s perforated curved doors are the same design as those used on the HUBER+SUHNER equipment cabinet range and the same quality look and feel is echoed across the complete portfolio.
Configured to suit your needs
The CDR is 47U high, 300 mm deep and comes in two standard width dimensions of 900 mm and 1200 mm. The 900 mm version is designed for splicing and MTP-LC furcation trays and the 1200 mm version is intended for patching only, whether it be LC or MTP cable systems.

1200 mm wide The CDR 1200 is designed as a dedicated «patching rack» and is configured by adding a 300 mm wide cable over-length rack to the left hand side of a standard 900 mm rack. The CDR 1200 is configured so that an equal amount of cable management is provided on both sides of the rack. The 1200 mm wide rack is better suited for patching applications with standard connectivity (patch cords or fan-outs) or 40G and 100G applications where MTP connectivity is required.
The patching tray unit can be fitted to the rack on-site and has a capacity of 15 × patching trays. In a 47U high rack, a maximum of 6 × 7U tray units can be fitted giving an overall capacity of 90 × patching trays per rack. The patching tray unit can accommodate MTP or LC patching trays as standard. Flexible, scalable and accessible The fiber tray is the core connectivity platform used within HUBER+SUHNER’s high density optical distribution racks (ODR). Incoming cables can either be fusion-spliced to pigtails inside the tray or alternatively pre-terminated MTP fan-outs can be factory installed for instant «plug & play» connectivity. This flexibility matches the fluid nature of data centers, offering the highest performance on the one hand and speed and flexibility on the other. The patch tray can be used for topologies that are in the process of migrating from LC connectivity to MTP connectivity. This product is therefore suitable in data centers moving away from 1G and 10G serial transmissions to 40G and 100G parallel optics. Centralised connectivity In its simplest form, each fiber tray inside the ODR represents a link to a remote area or zone in the data center. By connecting patch cords from one fiber tray to another fiber tray inside the same ODR, users can benefit from one centralised connectivity area. This is a much more structured approach to cabling than spontaneously running duplex patch cords from equipment rack to equipment rack. The fiber tray is available in eight colours so customers can allocate different areas in the network by colour which offers a uniquely high level of identification and traceability.

ODU – optimised distribution unit Characteristics • Integration of LiSA fiber trays supporting splicing solution or LiSA MTP transition solution • Front-mounting allows the use in standard 19” equipment cabinets • Each height unit accommodates 2 LiSA fiber trays • A llows instant access to fiber tray and its connectivity due to runner mechanism • Integral service loop for patch cords • Horizontal and vertical patch cord guides • Integrated patch cord mandrels for bend-radius protection • Patch cord retaining ring ensures safe strain relief of patch cords exiting the unit • Lockable front door offer complete access security • Flexible mounting points at the rear make cable glanding quick and easy See also: Fiber trays page 42 Unique connectivity solution for equipment cabinets The ODU is a sub-rack which allows fiber trays to be integrated into a standard 19 inch equipment cabinet. Flexible mounting options at the rear of the ODU make cable fixation quick and easy and bend-limiting conduits give ultimate protection to the incoming fibers. Patch cords are routed to the front side of the ODU and can either be guided to the rear of the cabinet (around the vertical rail) or vertically along the front of the rail if sufficient side space is available within the cabinet. The ODU has a lockable steel door which provides security to the internal connections. This feature is particularly beneficial in collocation data centers where multiple subscribers occupy the same rack space.

Universal adapter plates Characteristics • Capacity standard version 12 × MTP/LC duplex adapters • Capacity high density version 18 × MTP/LC duplex adapters • Fast installation with snap-fixation • Port numbering for easy identification • Compatible with a wide array of sub-racks and panels • Standard UAP compatible with sliding and fixed ZDP, vertical sub-racks and zero space brackets • HDUAP compatible with HDZDP and zero space brackets See also: ZDP panels page 49 Zero space brackets page 53
High density patching in panels and sub-racks Universal adapter plates are supplied pre-loaded with adapters and can be fitted to any panel or sub-rack that accepts the highdensity or standard size MTP modules. This allows adapter plates, modules and blind plates to be mixed and matched in the same panel if desired. Adapter plates are generally used in combination with ruggedised fan-outs whereby the fan-out connects to the rear side of the plate and patch cords connect to equipment ports on the front side. Blind versions of the plate are also available in situations where panel positions are to be reserved for later use. When building an MTP link, universal adapter plates are pre-loaded with MTP adapters so that incoming link assemblies can be connected with fan-outs directly to equipment ports. In 40G and 100G applications, the pre-loaded UAP will act as a patching area whereby MTP patch cords can be connected directly to multi-fiber transceivers. All universal adapter plates have recessed adapters which not only improve the bend radius of patch cords but also provide a larger surface area for port numbering and identification.

High density without valuable space consumption Zero space brackets are the perfect solution for bringing fiber connectivity into a rack that is already filled up with active equipment. Simply slide the bracket in front of pre-installed equipment to provide a close proximity patching field either on the right or left side of the cabinet rails. Zero space brackets are retrofittable which means that regardless of future network upgrades or technology changes, fiber connectivity can be integrated into the rack at any time. This product is not only intended as a last minute fix. Zero space brackets can play an important role in the design phase of any switch or server cabinet because they allow the rack to be fully configured with active equipment. This not only improves footprint costs but can also improve cable management due to the fact that both the patching and cable guidance are in the vertical space of the cabinet.

Zone distribution Panel Support Frame – PSF Characteristics • Robust steel construction • 19 inch compatible • Available in 2U, 3U and 4U versions • Retrofittable door kit available for 4U version • Flexible mounting options to suit any environment • Can be floor-mounted also (upside down) • Sufficient space for cable guides • Side fixings for customised brackets
Zone distribution offers a high degree of flexibility The panel support frame is a zone distributor that can be mounted above racks either to a cable basket, cable ladder or containment system. High density backbone cables from the main distribution area of the data center are terminated in the PSF and act as a consolidation point in which users can easily patch to nearby server racks. This approach follows the recommendations of various standardisation bodies who recognised the need to recommend a permanent cabling system in the data center with maximum flexibility and scalability. The PSF can be strategically placed above server cabinets so regardless of regular moves, adds and changes; the connection back to the MDA remains unchanged. The mounting brackets on the PSF are fully adjustable and can be adapted to virtually any environment or fixing platform. The frame itself is based on a 19 inch footprint and allows copper or fiber optic panels to be mounted in the available space. The PSF is available in 2U, 3U and 4U height variants so customers can decide how much capacity they need based on the panel density they are using. Generally speaking, the PSF will serve a number of server racks in close proximity. Therefore, it is not necessary to offer extreme density in such a distributor. For customers who require a higher degree of security, the PSF 4U is available with a door kit which can be locked to prevent unwanted user access.Cable guides can be added to the front of the frame or alternatively fixings in the side of the frame allow customised brackets to be mounted.

Underfloor Fixing Brackets – UFB Characteristics • Robust steel construction • Suitable for all 19 inch panels (copper and fiber) • Adjustable to match different sized pedestals • 2U of panel space available • Height adjustable • No tools required to fix to pedestal • Fast installation • Allows a structured cabling design according to standards such as TIA 942 • Provides localised connectivity for fast moves, adds and changes • Fast and flexible positioning anywhere in the data center • Height adjustable to clear existing infrastructure
Flexible mounting under the raised floor The underfloor fixing brackets are a zone distributor that can be mounted underneath the raised computer floor of data centers. Adjustable brackets can be secured to the pedestal so that 19 inch fiber optic and copper panels can be integrated between them. This product is designed exclusively for underfloor applications and allows users to consolidate their structured cabling in strategic areas of the data center. Backbone cables connect to the back of the panels while the front patching area remains free for all of the regular patches that need to be made to nearby server racks. This zone-based approach is particularly effective in data centers where moves, adds and changes are made on a regular basis.

High density blade organiser Characteristics • Compact 2U high construction • Brush-strip cover for cold/hot air blocking • Adjustable brackets to suit different racks • Up to 512 fiber ports per chassis • Central aperture for copper/power cables • Available with high density LC-XD connectors • Highest performance OM4 low-bend cabling • Suitable for cartridges or fan-out systems • Reduces air-flow blocking to equipment • Reduces cable clutter • Easy identification and traceability • Fast and simple blade replacement • Scalable pay as you grow cabling system • Easy handling of connectivity • Customised solutions available for different switch types See also: Ultralite fan-outs page 15 LC patch cords page 28
Innovative solutions for high density SAN switches The high density blade organiser is a 2U high chassis which can be positioned above or below a switch and allows up to 512 harnessed LC ports to be presented with minimal space consumption and air-flow disruption. The HDBO has a total of 8 × slot positions for either cartridges or fan-outs (4 left/4 right). These slots are designed to correspond with the blade positions of the switch so that pre-connectorised tails can be routed directly from the HDBO into their respective port locations. The chassis is 600 mm deep and can be installed by one person thanks to detachable brackets which can be mounted to the rear rails of the rack before the chassis is fixed. There are two types of HDBO chassis available. Customers can choose an HDBO which facilitates a closed cartridge system or alternatively an open ruggedised fan-out approach.

Cartridge system The sealed cartridge system is designed with MTP adapters presented at the rear and LC or SC fan-out tails exiting through the front aperture. This approach offers a flexible link design because MTP backbone or horizontal cables can be installed before active blades or cartridges are added.

Open fan-out system
The fan-out approach allows individual fan-outs to be routed directly from the centralised optical distribution rack to the switch without any additional connections in the link. This approach offers less flexibility than the cartridge system but provides customers with lower link losses between the MDA and switching area. Fan-outs can be supplied with any connector type but generally the LC-XD type (push-pull with extraction finger and uniboot) is recommended because even in the highest density applications, it is significantly faster and easier to add and remove connections than any other product on the market.

Fiber containment Characteristics • Halogen free, RoHS compliant • UV light-resistant • Flame-retardant UL94/V0 • Provides 100 % lateral support for fibers • Radius protected guiding elements • Secure and enclosed protection of fibers • Tool-less assembly • Compatible with all major brands • Resistant to electrical interference • No grounding needed • No specific tool set or skill set required • Quick and easy expansion of network • Accurate cable length calculations • Reduced operational failures and downtime • Faster traceability of circuits • Prolonged protection of fibers in disaster situations
Protecting your investment The HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution can be installed underfloor or overhead and provides a secure and stress-free routing channel for fiber optic cabling within a data center. Curved fittings such as crosspieces, tees and elbows are specifically designed to protect fibers so that a minimum bend radius of 30 mm is maintained at all times. Components of the system include straight channels, horizontal and vertical drop-offs and non-intrusive «over-the-top exits» to equipment cabinets. Additionally, all of the necessary mounting brackets and accessories are available to provide a fast and trouble-free installation. Protective covers can also be added to individual components if a higher degree of protection is required.
Lateral support and bend radius protection Unlike conventional cable baskets and ladders, the HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution offers lateral support along the complete fiber length. This reduces the risk of macro-bending and micro-bending of the individual cables. Easy installation The modular design of the HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution helps planners to meet the immediate capacity requirements of today without comprimising the expansion needs of tomorrow. Straight channels, curved fittings and interconnect components can easily be connected with standard joiners that require no special tooling or training. In addition, HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution is compatible with all other major brands and can easily be adapted to fit different environments and architectures. Fast installation In order to reduce installation times and simplify the complete assembly process, HUBER+SUHNER supply all duct components pre-assembled with joiners. This unique feature can reduce installation times by as much as 50 % and reduces a lot of the complexity involved in connecting straight ducts of different lengths to other components. Because a straight duct always requires at least one joiner, we assemble this in the factory so that full-length ducts can be connected in the fastest possible time. We also pre-fit the screws on the unmated side of the joiner to further improve handling and reduce installation times

Fiber containment cable capacity Cable capacity Below is a table showing the average capacity of the HUBER+SUHNER RaceWay system depending on different cable types and sizes. It is important to note that the higher quantity figures are based on straight ducting elements that are connected with joiners and do not represent the retrofittable top outlets. The first row however (100 mm × 45 mm), represents the useable space of a top-outlet or horizontal outlet.
40 % Expansion
60 % Capacity
The cable sizes shown in the table below, reflect the various cables we use for backbone links such as MTP link assemblies, MASTERLINES and fan-outs. We have included data about patch cord sizes although we recommend that patch cords are not guided through a ducting system (only in-rack). Careful attention should be given to the capacity of the top outlets because these represent the smallest cross-section when linking two cabinets in the data center. To avoid bottle-necks, make sure that the quantity of cables per cabinet is clearly understood and planned in advance. The cable quantity table below shows an 60 % fill ratio and a 40 % expansion. We recommend that all calculations are based on these figures so as to allow for future expansion and upgrades.

MTP® connectivity Key alignment The standard MTP adaptors supplied by HUBER+SUHNER have a key-slot facing upwards on one side of the adaptor and a key-slot facing downwards on the other side of the adaptor. The purpose of this is to ensure that fibers of the same colour/ number line up with each other when mated (using polarity type A). Some competitors use a key up to key up configuration but this is based on a different polarity method than that used by HUBER+SUHNER. Key marking To ease the connection process of MTP, a white mark is placed on the connector and the adaptor which ensures that the connector key lines up with the adaptor key when mated. Gender explanation MTP connectors are available as male (with pins) and female (without pins). A male connector must always be mated to a female connector so that light transfers from one fiber to another. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in a dark connection and possible damage to the connectors. HUBER+SUHNER supply modules, fiber trays and short fan-outs (less than 5m) with a male connector and backbone cables such as link assemblies and MASTERLINES with a female connector. Gender matching requires careful planning, especially when a customised link design is implemented. In some cases (such as links to SAN switches), it may be necessary to eliminate one of the MTP connections and route long fan-outs directly from the switch back to the MDA. In this case, a fan-out with a female connector should be used because it will be connected directly with a male connector at the fiber tray. It is possible with a special shroud removal tool to convert a male connector to a female connector and vice versa. However, this cannot be carried out in a field environment. All gender re-works must be carried out in a HUBER+SUHNER factory to reduce the risk of fiber breakage or connector damage. If you have any doubt about gender matching, please contact our technical support team for guidance. MTP performance Unless otherwise requested, HUBER+SUHNER will supply all multimode OM3 and OM4 assemblies with MTP elite ferrules. This not only ensures that optimum performance is obtained across a mated pair but also allows much longer and more complex links to be constructed without exceeding the specified optical budget. Singlemode assemblies are available with standard and elite ferrules (preferred type) depending on link design and budget considerations. It is important to note that HUBER+SUHNER supply all standard and elite singlemode connectors with a green connector shroud. We do not follow the practice of some manufacturers who prefer to use yellow for elite ferrules and green for the standard ones. Optical performance Performance classes "patch field"

Method A (HUBER+SUHNER standard) Method A uses key up to key down adaptors to link straight-through ribbon cables to modules/cassettes. In this respect, fiber 1 is always in the same position when looking at the array connector end-on with the key up. The polarity flip is achieved using a duplex patch cord at one end of the link. HUBER+SUHNER use and recommend method A as standard because all of the array based products are straight-through and it is only the patch cords which are flipped. Duplex clips facilitate simple on-site changes to polarity because simplex connectors can be removed from the clip and swapped over. This is a far safer approach to building an array-based network and for this reason has become the method of choice.

Method B Method B uses key up to key up adaptors to link straight-through ribbon cables to fiber cassettes/modules. Here, the only difference between method B cassettes and method A is the adaptor. The fiber channel is completed by flipping the second cassette and re-numbering it so that a standard A-B jumper cable can be used to connect them. This method is more complex for planners than method A because fiber numbers no longer correspond with each other (e.g . fiber 1 connects to 12, 2 to 11, 3 to 10 and so on). In addition, method B does not support singlemode installations because the array connector is angled and flipping these angles produces a mismatch.

Method C Method C uses key up to key down adaptors to link cassettes/modules using a special flipped ribbon jumper assembly. In this configuration, the ribbon cable creates the flip allowing standard straight-through patch cords to be used at each end. On longer channel links where more than one array cable is used, care must be taken to ensure that the flip remains consistent thereby making this method somewhat more complex for planners than method A.

Patch cords Cable selection HUBER+SUHNER recommend that whenever possible, patch cords should only be used for in-rack connections. This simplifies Moves, Adds and Changes (MACs) and reduces the cable chaos generated by thousands of cross-network 2-fiber connections. Generally speaking, the smallest possible patch cord cable should be used for in-rack applications so that the overall cable mass can be reduced. The introduction of bend-optimised fiber across our range means that cables with a smaller outer diameter can be utilised without running the risk of performance degradation in tight spaces. Calculating patch cord lengths in HUBER+SUHNER racks The rack can either be used as a cross-connect cabinet or as an inter-connect cabinet. When used as a cross-connect solution, high density cables enter the rack from different zones of the data center and patch cords inside the rack cross-connect these different areas. The reason for this design is to reduce the time and complexity of inter-connect systems whereby patch cords are routed spontaneously from one place to another whenever a link is needed. The patch cord management area in the rack has been designed in such a way that links from any fiber tray to any fiber tray can be made with just two different patch cord lengths. This reduces complexity and allows our customers to make much better use of their stock holding. The drawing below shows the rack segmented into two halves (the upper section and the lower section). If a connection is needed between a fiber tray in the upper section of the rack to another fiber tray in the upper section of the rack, then a patch cord of 3.5 m is required. This also applies to connections made from a fiber tray in the lower section of the rack to another fiber tray in the lower section. Generally, we advise our customers to logically split the rack top to bottom so that the majority of connections are made from the top to the bottom and not from the top to top or bottom to bottom. In this case, the length of patch cord needed is 5 m. In some cases, it will be necessary to position more than one rack together so that a higher density cross-connect can be achieved. In such cases, the patch cord lengths will need to be adjusted accordingly. The figure and table hereafter show how the various segments of the racks correspond to different patch cord lengths.

Standards Standards governing the design, installation, commissioning and operation of structured cabling systems, and the particular environments they operate within can be complex and confusing. There are 3 main standardisation bodies across the world and depending on where the installation takes place, they have an order of precedence. Internationally, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) is the main body for producing such standards and in support of ISO the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), produces the standards for the relevant components. In Europe, CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation) is the overall authority for the production of standards. Various national committees also exist in many of the European countries and may take their national standards from any of the main standards bodies, or may develop their own. Typically though, normative European standards (EN) are adopted by those national standards bodies. In the Americas (including Canada), the TIA is the dominant standards body, although the structure of its standards is slightly different (and in some cases conflicting) to that of ISO and CENELEC. There tends to be more harmonisation with CENELEC and ISO standards bodies, although some of the differences with TIA are only nomenclature. HUBER+SUHNER, as a global company, supplying a globally-suitable product, references International Standards as a preference. This does not mean that relevant national standards are not complied with due to local standards always taking precedence, but this is typically most relevant in the design and installation requirements rather than components that a manufacturer may supply. These main standards are listed below: ISO/IEC 11801:2002 and A.1:2008 ISO/IEC 24764 Edition 1.0 2010-04

Balanced cable
A cable construction technology used in copper structured cabling systems that generally utilises 4 pairs of twisted conductors, which are "balanced" together to provide a suitable medium for data transmission when used in conjunction with suitable connectors (typically RJ45 type). Can be produced in shielded (screened) or unscreened form. The balancing ensures consistent performance on each pair.
