Dear Parents, We really had a “ball” in our language group today! We read a cute story called “Snug House. Bug House”It is about a group of bugs who build a house out of a tennis ball. The story is filled with wonderful rhymes and fun pictures. As we read the story, we asked lots of problem solving questions like, “Why do they need a saw?” or “What do you think they will do with the brush?” We found rhymes for the word “ball”. Can your child find a rhyme? We also clapped out the number of syllables in words like- screwdriver, construction, tennis ball. We also retold a simple sequenced story about a group of people building a house. We worked on verb tense forms. (ex. “He will saw.” “They painted the door.”) The kids each held a tennis ball as they played a following directions game involving prepositions. (ex. “Put the ball in front of the ant.”) We talked about categories of objects. Mrs. Ross presented items and the kids would try to guess if the item was a toy or a tool. (Do you play with it, or do work with it?) Mrs. Ross showed the kids some crazy balls and the kids had to guess how to make each ball move. How can we shoot the ball out? How can we make this ball shake? We worked on our speech sound patterns in words like; Syllables- tennis ball, screwdriver ( we clap for each syllable in these words or use visual cues like blocks or plastic chips) Finals- hit, home, wood, paint, ( Have child watch your mouth to see you “close” the word with the ending sound. For final “T” I tap my upper lip with my index finger) Velars- Back sounds- (K, G)- bug, glue, car, case, cut, work ( cue- tap cheek by ear- “Up in back”) “L”- lazy, long, last, lid, large, ladybug ( cue- I tap my upper lip with my index finger. cue- “Use your tongue tip” “Tongue behind teeth.”) Blowing sounds- (F, S)- fan, fit, roof, soft, saw, sound, house, shake F/V- ( cue.- I curl my finger tips into the palm of my hand then extend hand out to indicate the continual release of air on the “F” sound. Cue- “Bite and blow” cue- jack-o-lantern face) S/Z-,( cue- to help kids feel the “S”, I let them hold their finger in front of my and their own teeth to feel blowing air as they make the “s” /”Z” sounds. Cue- “Tongue behind your teeth.” Cue“Keep the snake in the cage!”) SH/CH- wash, share, catch, shake( Cue- “Round your lips, pull tongue back.” Cue- I place my hand by my mouth palms out, finger tips touching, I slowly move hand away from me and extend/ open my hand up.) “S” blends- screw, spin, spot, small, (I run my finger down my arm as I make the long airflow sound “s”, then I tap by my wrist for the next sound in the blend. Ex. st, sk, sp) Mrs. Ross showed the class a fun finger play song that she sings to her family. She showed the kids the actions that accompany the song. Sing the song at home and see if your child can remember the actions! To the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Build a house and build it high. Build it right up to the sky. See the roof and see the floor. See the little swinging door. See the Daddy making bread. See the children asleep in bed. SHHHHHHHH…………WAKE UP!! Any questions? Please contact me!
