1. OVERVIEW a) What is Digital TV? Digital TV has recently been introduced in the UK. Digital refers to the way the transmission of images and sound that make up a TV programme are transmitted to your TV set. Much in the way a computer works by coding data in a stream of ones and zeros - digital TV sends a coded signal to your TV set. This means that the airwaves taken up by digital TV take up a lot less space. The airwaves that once transmitted one analogue channel will now have space to transmit up to six or seven digital channels. As a result the viewer has more choice. Widescreen TV is another option that digital TV can provide. Interactive TV is yet another feature of Digital TV. By using your remote you can access all kinds of information. Digital text is much clearer than the old analogue format. Digital systems allow you to choose your camera view of big events using the interactive channels. With more and more features such as these digital TV is paving the way for a much more interactive experience when watching TV. The Government has decided that some time between 2005 and 2010 the analogue services will be switched off. They have however indicated that the 'switch - off' will only happen if most viewers have decided to make the switch to digital TV themselves.
b) Why is Digital TV Better? Digital TV is better for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is that there will be more choice of what is available to view. With interactive TV becoming the way of the future, consumers will have more of a say as to what standards are set in place in regards to broadcasts. The images and sound are clearer and widescreen TV is much easier to access through Digital TV. As analogue TV is eventually going to be switched off, resources into broadcasting will tend to be put into digital TV and not the older analogue type transmissions (a method that has been used for about 60 - 70 years). As a result if people want to know what is new, be it features of digital TV or the types of shows that are being aired -
1-1
DEC2000-t Installation and reference Manual digital TV is the medium that more and more people will be turning to. Analogue TV will have no new developments and it is unlikely that any new resources will be pumped into this ageing broadcast format.

d) Why Switch to Digital TV? There are many reasons as to why one should switch to Digital TV. More choice is one of the most obvious reasons. While with Analogue TV's there are 5 channels, there is also no monthly cost. Digital TV and the DEC mean that not only are you presented with choice but for a small one off cost you have all these channels to choose from, with no monthly fee to pay at the end of each month. While other cable and satellite operators charge a subscription, the DEC functions on completely free to view TV. The features that comprise Digital TV are also of better quality. Digital picture and sound quality are superior to the analogue transmissions. Not only is widescreen more readily available with Digital TV, but the vast choice of channels means there is also a much wider selection. Specialised shows on channels that cater to more specific demands mean that viewers will naturally start choosing to switch over to Digital TV. Finally the DEC2000-t is a very small and portable device, it can be moved from location to location. With simple installation, digital TV and its vast range of features are never far away. The DEC2000-t can also function as a recording device, when used with a computer or notebook. The already small space saver can save even more space with the elimination of the use of VCR's.
e) Do I need a subscription? No you do not need to pay a monthly subscription fee. However… "If you use or install television receiving equipment to receive or record television programme services you are required by law to have a valid TV Licence. The type of licence you'll need and how to go about getting one will depend upon your individual circumstances." See www.tvlicencing.co.uk for more details.

c) Connecting the DEC2000 to your TV set There are two ways to connect the DEC2000 to your TV set: through a SCART cable or through an RF cable. A SCART connection will give the best digital picture quality. If you have a TV set which accepts RGB SCART, your picture quality will be the best possible. Most modern TV's have one or more SCART socket. To find out if a SCART socket is RGB, consult your TV sets’ manual. If your TV does not have a SCART connection, you can also use the supplied RF Loop-through cable.
3-2
DEC2000-t Installation and Reference Manual Connecting the DEC2000 to your TV set via SCART i. Locate the supplied SCART to SCART cable. You will need to connect one end to the DEC2000-t SCART socket and the other end into the SCART connector on your TV set (as illustrated below). Then, set your TV set to accept AV input (SCART input). When you turn on the DEC2000, you should see the Welcome Menu on your TV set.
ii. If your TV is already using the SCART from your VCR, and your VCR has an available SCART input socket, you can connect the DEC2000-t as illustrated below. Connect one end of the SCART cable to the DEC2000-t SCART out socket and the other end into the SCART In connector on your VCR. Then, set your TV to AV input (SCART input). 3-7
DEC2000-t Installation and reference Manual
Initial scan for channels: A progress bar which overlays the picture will indicate how many TV and Radio channels have been received. Please note this may take a few minutes. Once completed, it will automatically switch to the first available TV channel. If you do not pick up channels, or the video quality is poor, there could be a few different things wrong with the installation: - Most UK homes are in a coverage area. Use the Freeview.co.uk postcode check to see if you’re in a coverage area. If you’re in a coverage area you should be able to get Freeview with your existing rooftop or loft aerial and wiring provided they are in good condition. - Your TV antenna might not be oriented correctly to pick up the digital TV channels. In this case, reorient the antenna and scan for channels again (see Chapter 5 - Scan Menu) - your antenna might need to be replaced. In some parts of the country, Freeview signals use a different frequency or transmitter so you’ll probably need a “wideband” type of rooftop aerial. The Freeview.co.uk postcode check tells you if this applies where you live.
Mini EPG: Now the channels have been scanned you can change the channels by using the up and down buttons on the remote control. Each time you
3-8

m. InterVideo WinDVD During installation of the DEC2000 to the PC, DEC2000-t will detect if you have, on your PC, a version of Intervideo’s WinDVD. This software is used to decode the TV signal coming from the DEC2000 to the PC. DEC2000-t needs these files to ensure the live TV MPEG stream is delivered without any degradation in the picture quality If the set-up detects you do not have a version of Intervideo’s WinDVD on your PC, a new version will automatically be installed. There is no user interaction required to this to happen. WinDVD also lets you playback an MPEG2 file captured with DEC2000-t. (See below)
6-8
DEC2000-t Installation and Reference Manual Note: Audio and video streams are written in the MPEG2 format onto your hard disk. The recording process performing a transfer rate of up to several Mbit/s requires fast, capacious disk drives. For example, recording a one minute video stream at its typical data rate (4Mbit/s) requires 30 MBytes of free space, one hour of video will require approximately 1.8 GBytes. For more information and support regarding InterVideo WinDVD you can visit the website at: www.intervideo.com
n. Tips on recording TV shows on your PC
N
ote: video and audio streams are stored in MPEG-2 format on your hard drive. You will need 1.8Gigabytes of hard disk space for 1 hour of video. A recently de-fragmented hard drive is recommended for capturing longer sequences of video. Recording performance may be improved by changing a Windows setting called 'Read-ahead optimization' to 'None'. This setting can be found under Control Panel / System / Performance / File System. It is also recommended to close down any other applications before you start capturing. If you are having problems recording TV shows, please consider these recommendations to increase performance: · Capture audio/video data onto a hard drive of its own (or its own partition at least). A seperate hard disk drive improves recording performance by keeping your computer programs on a different disk drive. · Increase the access time of your hard drive by de-fragmenting it prior to capturing long sequences. · Close down any other applications before you start recording. · Terminate services operating in the background, such as screen savers, virus detection software, etc. · Disable the Auto insert notification of your CD-ROM drive. · If necessary, reduce screen's pixel resolution, e. g. from 1024 x 768 down to 800 x600. · Turn off the printer. · Disable the network card (if installed).

p. The MHEG digital teletext application
When there is Digital Teletext being broadcast, you can access this information by pressing the Digital Teletext symbol in the Digital TV application. This activates the Digital Teletext application, as shown below. When only Digital Teletext is being broadcast (and no TV picture), the application will be activated automatically. Teletext services often load automatically shortly after the Digital Teletext window is displayed. In which case, simply follow the given instructions (e.g. ‘Press Red’). To enter other services, you may have to press Text. Note: It may be necessary to wait a few seconds for some teletext services to load before you can access them. If the display remains blank, and pressing Text does not start the service, it means that there is no Digital Teletext service being broadcast on the current channel at this time. When you change channel using the TV application, the display changes to reflect the teletext service available on the new channel. In some situa-

DEC2000-t Installation and Reference Manual tions, the teletext services may change the channel in the Digital TV application automatically.
Digital Teletext software remote control You can use the Software Remote Control window to drive the text service, or alternatively, you can use the keyboard accelerators, listed below. You can move the Software Remote Control to another location on the screen, or attach it to the Digital Teletext window by moving it close to its left or right side, where it will ‘snap’ to it. The Remote can be toggled on and off by right-clicking on the title bar of the main Digital Teletext window, and selecting Remote On in the Options menu. The contents of the Digital Teletext window can be copied to the clipboard in the form of an image which can be pasted into other applications. You can do this by right-clicking on the title bar of the main Digital Teletext window, and selecting the Snapshot command.

7. Troubleshooting the PC application Many errors are caused by the incorrect installation of the 'Hauppauge DEC USB Device' driver. We must first check the device manager to see if the driver has been installed correctly (Win98/ME): Open the device manager (Start / Settings / Control Panel / System / Device manager). The 'Hauppauge - DEC USB Device' must be entered once in the category 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'
Problem: The TV window remains light-grey or Error message: " main window could not be set. Video in own window tries to play. " Explanation: This error message appears, if the MPEG-2 software decoder is not installed or is not correctly installed. You may also get this message if the Direct Draw acceleration of the VGA card is not activated. Under Windows NT 4,0 this message will always appear, since Live TV is not supported here. Solution: Install the software of the WinTV-DEC2000-t USB installation CD ROM again (Setup.exe). The WinTV-Nova- T USB needs a VGA card with hardware overlay operation. For the following example (the older) graphics cards are not suitable: S3 Trio 64, Matrox Millenium I, Matrox Productiva G100. The following are compatible: S3 Trio 64V, Matrox Millenium G200 / G400, Nvidia GeForce 256 The Hardware acceleration of the graphics card should be set to 100% Full. You can check by going to start \ control panel \ system \ properties \ performance \ graphics and you should set the hardware acceleration to Full. Run the program dxdiag on (start / run / dxdiag). Select the menu option " display " and make sure that the option Direct Draw acceleration is enabled.
Problem: No channels found or PSI tables do not become highlighted This is normally caused by weak signal strength or by your aerial not being able to receive a Digital Terrestrial signal. Solution: You may want to try a signal booster, a high gain aerial or alternatively contact your local aerial installer. (To locate an installer near you in
7-1
DEC2000-t Installation and reference Manual the United Kingdom look up http://www.tv-installers.com/index2.html ).
Problem: the Hauppauge DEC2000-t USB driver is not installed in the Device Manager This may happen if the driver is not installed correctly (select Update for the driver in the device manager and select the CD ROM driver) or if you are using a USB HUB (Try connecting directly to the system's USB port). This may also be caused by any Firewall or Network protection software that you may have installed on your system. Because the card uses a Static IP address this must be added to a secure zone with in networking protection software.
Problem: No sound or Audio from a TV Channel This is normally caused by a 'MUTE' option being selected in the Windows Volume control. You can check this by going to 'Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume control'. If you then go to 'options/properties/playback' and make sure that there is a check box in all of the devices listed (you may have to scroll up & down). If you then select 'OK' you should see a volume control box and there may be one that has a check in mute, which you need to remove.
