Page 2 of 33 HPA  Tech  Retreat  2012  Demo  Room  Descriptions Company: Barco Email: [email protected] Contact: Goran Stojmenovik Telephone: +32475980386 DP4K-P, dedicated 4K projector for Post-Production. At HPA we will give an introduction of a 4K projector dedicated for post-production. The actual projector won't be shown, rather the new and unique features will be presented. The main differences to a standard Barco 4K (cinema) projector are: • 4x 3Gb/s HD-SDI inputs, supporting Level A and Level B signals; • High contrast (2500:1) aided by a new high-contrast lens; • Color gamut, white point, brightness and color uniformity specifications according to SMPTE specs for Review Room projectors; • Wide Color Gamut filter enabling different color spaces (DCI, Rec.709, up to P7). Next to the optical and input capabilities, the input board in combination with Barco Communicator software, offers unique additional functionality such as: • Different 3D color gamut calibration files per eye; • Image composition of 2 inputs (side by side; vertical/horizontal/diagonal split with freely moveable split line; checkerbox); • Configurable bit analysis of input signals (showing R/G/B components; showing only Most Significant Bits to visualize truncation errors, magnifying the content of Least Significant Bits); • HFR v.s. normal frame rate: frame dropping of HFR signals to show them at normal frame rate. Company: Barco Email: [email protected] Contact: Brian Claypool Telephone: +1 415 328 0826 Sponsor The introduction of digital projection in cinema theatres has spurred a revival in 3D movies. In contrast to this revolution of the visual experience, cinema audio has been evolving very slowly. In fact, other than adding a few more speakers to surround the audience with sound, the past 20 years have brought forth no significant innovations that make the aural experience as life-like and immersive as 3D imagery … until now. Auro-3D provides the immersive 3D sound while being backwards compatible with existing standards. There is no “chicken & egg” problem, which has blocked the introduction of similar new technologies in the past. The master mix is first artistically created in 11.1 for the main release into theaters. Next, the 11.1 mix is folded into a 5.1 release mix in a quick, but artistically supervised, mix-down session. Then, this 5.1 master is encoded with the Auro-3D (11.1) channel information to create the final 5.1 PCM (uncompressed audio) master used in distribution and, potentially, in all other downstream formats. How does it work? It is generally accepted that the dynamic range of a final mix master for end-users does not have to be more than 20-bit (= a dynamic range of about 120 dB). In fact, the dynamic range of mastered sound (re)production will rarely exceed 96 dB (slightly more than the dynamic range of a 16-bit compact disc). This is not the case during the workflow (before the final master is made), where it is still important to have 24 bits providing enough headroom for mixing without any compromise. But as soon as the final mix is made, 20-bit PCM masters do have uncompromised perfect audio quality. Auro3D makes intelligent use of this available headroom to package the extra height information. We will show an interactive demo of an Auro3D setup, allowing the attendees to hear and play around with the configuration. Page 3 of 33 HPA  Tech  Retreat  2012  Demo  Room  Descriptions Company: Belden Email: [email protected] Contact: Steve Lampen Telephone: 415-531-4668 cell Belden will be showing three things at the 2012 HPA Tech Retreat. First will be our Brilliance fiber connectors. They go on in five seconds, require no glue, no heat, and only minimal fiber preparation. We will have them on hand to allow attendees to install one and test it to be sure it is working. And if the connection is bad, this fiber connector can be taken apart and repeated up to five times! Our second demo will be our new HD BNC connectors. These are one piece compression connectors which can be put on very quickly (a few seconds). On Belden 1694A cable they have a pull strength of 110 lbs (virtually impossible to pull off) and yet the return loss on this connector is better than the Belden cable it attaches to. Our third demo is truly revolutionary. We will be showing a new AVB switch from Hirschmann (a Belden brand). AVB is a re-write of IEEE 802.1, the Ethernet standard, allowing audio and video to be carried on Ethernet, with very low latency and timed bit streams. The demo will show two audio sources with the AVB turned on or off (and headphone to listen to). Alignment of audio bit streams is now part of the switch and does not require any other outboard device. Company: C360 Technologies, Inc. The move to 48fps creates challenges for traditional storage technologies that are still struggling with the move towards 3D content just a few years back that doubled the capacity and performance expectation. This move towards 48fps or even 60fps yet again increases the performance and capacity requirements for a storage subsystem. DDN will be demonstrating an SFA10K-X storage platform with xSTREAMScaler, which is designed for providing simultaneous access to multiple high bandwidth streams for enabling content rich shared workflows. SFA10K-X delivers 15GB/s of performance and scales to multiple PB's under same namespace with more IOPS and bandwidth to handle mixed and random seeks. The SFA10K-X is novel because it's the only storage system that can provide Real-Time access to streams at this much bandwidth with shared access. Low latency access with high IOPS provides the seek times necessary to access frames in time from multiple content creation tools. Whether increasing a parallel workflow or accessing different scenes at the same time (3D, multicam etc.), low latency is critical to the creative process. Producing bandwidth isn’t enough in a production environment. As CPU processing has increased in scale, disk storage has not kept pace. To take advantage of today’s faster workstations and higher video bitrates and frame rates, the digital film making process requires a storage solution built to harness and aggregate disk technologies to meet today’s demands for high resolution digital content with real life motion using higher frame rates. These high frame rate workflows are so latency sensitive, that a dropped frame or a jitter during recording requires a complete restart of the process – making latencies not inconveniences, but disasters. The SFA’s parallel, massive backplane will make this next generation of workflow, the standard. This revolutionary control surface brings flexibility to the TV and post engineer. 3) Real time thumbnail LCD display shows the source in the router. Indicators for synchronicity, timing, audio and AFD, too. 4) Clean Switch option provides full frame synchronization so it can switch cleanly between asynchronous sources and it can be used for master control and bypass. (Other routers don't have a clean switch or only have a line sync.) The Avenue modular digital video router is the most flexible, technologically advanced small router available today. It’s ideal for QC monitoring, master control bypass switching, ENG trucks, edit suites, and a host of other applications. Ease of expansion, user-definable input/output port geometry, exclusive video thumbnails, built-in test signal generation, and optional clean and quiet switching on multiple outputs make it perfect for high-end post broadcast applications. Company: FilmLight Email: [email protected] Contact: Craig Risebury Telephone: 323 785 1630 Flux FilmLight will demo a new type of media management platform, specifically addressing the needs of post production. It combines the open architecture of a general purpose high performance filesystem with an equally open sequence-aware database. This provides instant access to a wide range of standard and custom metadata, from standard file attributes via timecode, ISO settings to complex content-based identifiers. A sophisticated visual browser allows the constructions of sets of images, sequences and lists of sequences with specific properties like timecode ranges, resolutions or names. Set operators like union, intersect, except can be used to manage terabyte-scale content in an instant. A command line interpreter gives the ability to construct complex automated data management and workflow tasks, like selective archiving and conform-based data migration. Built-in image processing capability can be used to automatically do format conversions, create deliverables and make new versions. Data managed. No wrangling. Final Cut Pro Plugin Baselight Plugin makes Baselight's advanced colour grading functionality accessible within the heart of Apple's Final Cut Pro. Baselight technology works seamlessly in a familiar fashion, right within the FCP timeline. The editor can now grade source media in place and in full context of edits and applied effects. Nuke Plugin Bringing the powerful Baselight grading toolset directly into the VFX pipeline. With a single Baselight Plugin node you can apply several separate grading layers. Each layer has the ability to act either as an overall primary colour correction, or as a secondary correction layer allowing you to restrict the effect to selected parts of the image using bezier shapes, keys and external mattes. Secondary grades work as inside/outside layers where separate grades and filter effects can be applied both 'inside' and 'outside' the matte. Spectral Signature uses dynamic eq filters that can analyze and capture the spectral content of an audio program in order to later apply it to another audio program in real time. The program with the "Spectral Signature" applied to it will then have the sonic characteristics of the original sampled program. This technology will be useful for voice over matching, ADR, soundtrack and ambience cohesiveness, historical footage “recreation”, and more. Level Magic loudness processing utilizing Multi-Loop design will also be featured in TAP and DAP. Users can simply choose their appropriate target loudness and the algorithm will only force non-compliant audio to this value. Audio artifacts are avoided through use of both the Multi-Loop design as well as adaptive dynamic time constants. An audio active demonstration of Spectral Signature and stereo Level Magic processing will be displayed. A Loudness Logger will also be available for demo. Also shown is upsizing 2880 x 1620 Bayer Pattern scenes from the Arri Alexa to 3840 x 2160. All processing is done in IIF ACES, which is rendered via the latest RRT/ODT system during playback. Using layered decoding, the augmented resolution can be interactively optionally accessed during decoding, with the original resolution (and lower) also interactively available. Upsizing resolution is required for larger presentations. Upsizing resolution therefore typically expands the visual angle of each image pixel region, and thus any noise in the original is expanded in the visual angle that it subtends. Thus, the upsizing software is integrated with noise reduction. Sharpening is also added, although detail above the original image resolution is inherently synthetic. Also, there is a direct relationship between noise and sharpening. The integration of upsizing, sharpening, and noise reduction produces a high quality result as shown by this demonstration. During that presentation we presented the mathematical analysis and did not have example images to demonstrate the analysis. Since that presentation, we have produced example images that demonstrate the analytical factors called 3D Width Magnification and 3D Shape Ratio that predict the viewer’s perception of size and shape of stereoscopic image content. We will show our example images to the demo room participants. This will allow the participants to compare their own viewing perception to our prediction of their viewing perception using our analysis of 3D Width Magnification and 3D Shape Ratio. We will also explain the 3D Width Magnication and 3D Shape Ratio factors in detail if there is interest. Hardware-based solutions which provide real-time, synchronous video conversion have been available for decades, including “black box” systems for complex operations such as standards conversion--or film-to-video field-cadence correction--with simultaneous motion estimation. In recent years, video broadcast and production service facilities have migrated from broadband video to file-based infrastructures and in the process have developed new "tapeless" workflows suited to the conversion and distribution of video and audio content in the form of files. In some cases, software applications have replaced black box hardware, but in cases of complex image interpolations the black box solutions continue to provide optimum results in terms of image quality and speed. A real-time file input and output functionality incorporated into the black box solution allows for both the advantages of a hardware-based system and the integration into the tapeless workflow. The LUT can be saved to an external image processor such as many of the processors familiar to the industry. The monitor is minutely profiled for its deviations from a specified standard. You can select among familiar standards such as BT 709 or DCI, but you can also create your own reference targets – for example, declaring an existing monitor used for mastering content in the past to be the standard which new monitors should be set to emulate. Based on the same engine as SpectraCal’s PC calibration product CalPC and video calibration flagship CalMAN, CalMAN Studio contains almost entirely automated workflow designed specifically to meet the requirements of the post-production professional. CalMAN Studio is in pre-release testing, and SpectraCal is actively seeking comments on its feature set and suggestions for improvement. Temporal aliasing is the root cause of many motion artifacts, including judder in pans, the “wagon-wheel effect”, and flicker in lights and plasma displays. In the live demonstration, a camera with the Time Filter attached is used to image moving objects that will, in normal circumstances, exhibit temporal aliasing. A spinning disk with a pattern ordinarily shows precessing patterns in the camera’s view, but when the Time Filter is activated, the recorded image appears as it does in real life. The Time Filter is a liquid crystal shutter that is placed in front of the camera’s lens. An included electronic control box interfaces with the camera to synchronize the shuttering with acquisition. The Time Filter shuttering is unique in that instead of a rapid closed to open transition, it smoothly transitions in a mathematically defined pattern between closed to open and back again. A typical shutter is a square wave; the Time Filter shutter describes a curved, smooth ramp. This dramatically changes the appearance of motion in the recorded image.
