Using Windows 8 and Touch: FREDA Objectives Description This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of a hands-on demo showcasing how to set up and demo FREDA eReader using touch  Installing the FREDA eReader app to the START page  Launching the FREDA eReader app and logging in  Using the setting up and and using the FREDA eReader app  Exiting the FREDA eReader app and returning to the START screen This demo will allow you to demonstrate the popular ebook reader for the Windows Phone platform (ans Windows Mobile before that) now available for Windows 8. Access to on-line book catalogs (Feedbooks, Smashwords, Gutenberg, Manybooks, Ebooksgratuits, Flibusta and more.) Includes dyslexic-friendly settings (and the OpenDyslexic font), to assist reading for dyslexia sufferers. Bookmarks, highlighting and annotations. Many options for customizing text appearance and layout Equipment This hands-on demo requires the following:   Estimated time to complete this demo: maximum 5 to 10 minutes One touch based Ultrabook (convertible or detachable in clamshell or tablet mode) o Windows 8 installed o Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processor o 4 GB or more of RAM o Can be run in landscape or portrait mode Internet access is required to download individual books. Can be run off-line for downloaded books. Using Windows 8 and Touch: FREDA Demo Setup—Installing the FREDA eReader App Overview In this step, you will prepare the Ultrabook to run the FREDA eReader touch demo. You need to be running Windows 8. 1. Set your Ultrabook to run in either the clamshell or tablet, landscape or portrait mode. 2. From the START screen, touch the Store app. 3. When the store screen appears, swipe from off the right of the screen toward the center so the “charms” appear. The top choice should be Search with a magnifying glass icon. 4. Touch Search then touch the Store search blank area to pop up the on-screen keyboard or simply use the keyboard to type FREDA. Then touch the magnifying glass icon at the right side of the block you just entered FREDA to (or press the enter key). 5. The first listing just below Results for “FREDA”, should be a rectangle showing FREDA eReader. 6. Touch the icon. The FREDA App and the installation page will appear. 7. Touch the Install block. This will install the App to you START screen. 8. When installed the FREDA App will now be located on the START screen. 2 Using Windows 8 and Touch: FREDA 3 Demo Setup— Setting up the FREDA eReader demo with Touch Demo Setup Do this before you demo to customers 1) On the START screen scroll to the FREDA eReader app tile and touch it. 2) The FREDA eReader app will appear on screen. 3) The title will appear with five squares across the top; a) HOME b) BOOKSHELF c) BOOK d) SOURCES e) SOURCE 4) Along the left side will be four squares with book cover images. Next to each image is the title and author. If it has not been downloaded it will indicate “not downloaded.” You will see; a) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll b) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle c) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin d) The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells 5) To prepare for use, select a title 6) The next screen shows a large image of the book cover and to the right side is information on where the book is available, a brief synopsis, copyright information and category. 7) Tap the image of the book cover and a pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen. At the lower left a circle with a down arrow will appear just above the word “Download.” Touch “Download”. 8) At this point the book will download. During the download there will may be no indication that the book is downloading. On occasion it does indicate how much has downloaded. 9) “Ready to read – tap here to start” touch that point and it will take you to the Cover Image of the book. Located at the bottom of the screen will be the number of the page displayed and the number of pages in the book. 10) Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and you will have a set of choices; a) Swipe to: (a slider selects “Turn Page” or “Select”. If you use select you can turn the page by tapping the screen.) b) Presets c) Contents (brings up the index allowing you to jump to the section you want) d) Bookmarks Using Windows 8 and Touch: FREDA 4 e) Find. Choosing this will create a new pop-up that lets you; i) Find Backward ii) Find Forward iii) Find Again iv) Dictionary v) Bing (internet search) vi) Widipedia vii) Translate (there are generally two letters to identify from and to. There is a down caret that will allow you to search languages to translate.) viii) Close (will bring you back to the previous bottom pop-up 11) To return to reading the book, simply tap the screen in the text area. 12) Go through some of the book. 13) Swipe up from the bottom to pop up the menu at the bottom. 14) At the top of the page notice the title and at the upper left is a back arrow in a circle. Touch here and it will return you to the description page for the book. 15) Tap the back arrow (or one of the menu squares at the top) and it will return you to the Bookshelf showing the book now on the bookshelf (or the corresponding menu choice) 16) Tap the back arrow (or one of the menu squares at the top) and it will send you to a folder icon that opens a folder of books stored on your computer or SkyDrive (or the corresponding menu choice). 17) There is another way to make a menu choice, tap the down caret located just to the right of the main title at the top of the page. This will cause a choice drop down menu to appear. 18) Go to the HOME page and download all four free books Using Windows 8 and Touch: FREDA Demo 5 Demo the FREDA eReader app with Touch 1) On the START screen scroll to the FREDA eReader app tile and touch it. 2) The FREDA eReader app home page will appear on screen. 3) Select a book to open 4) At the title screen for the book swip on screen from right to left. 5) The title, author, publishing date, category and source will be shown. 6) The next page talks about the author and lists other books by them. Their title will be highlighted in blue. Touching this blue highlight will take you to a site where the book may be downloaded. 7) Swipe to the right once more and the book will start. 8) Continue to swipe through the pages. 9) Swipe up from the bottom and select one of the menu choices and demonstrate its usage. 10) If you want to simply leave the app open (active) and switch to a new app: a) You can do this by either, touching the Win logo at the bottom of the screen (or pressing the Windows key on the keyboard). Yet another choice is to swipe from off the screen on the right toward the center of the screen then choose the Windows “charm” that appears on the right. You can return to this app by pressing the Windows key again or swiping from the left side of the screen. b) To close the apps completely swipe down from the top of the screen all the way to the bottom. This will close the chosen app and return you to the START screen.
