The hard-hitting ‘ride first, ask questions later’ character and outstanding kit value of the Heist 2.0 mean you don’t need to do a bank job to get a proper technical-trail-ready whip. D The frame The Heist frame is based on the same geometry as its longer-forked Myers big brother, with a low standover top tube, extended seat tube and square-headed down tube, but a skinnier straight-steerer head tube at the front end. Internal butting is used to reduce the weight of the tubeset, and the transmission of harsh vibrations. Cables run under the top tube to keep them out of harm’s way and there are rear rack mounts for commuting or exploring duties. Mud room is generous around the chunky tyres too, which leaves only the old IS style rear brake mount and the lack of XS and XL sizes to grumble about. The kit While the frame is decent it’s the kit selection that puts the Heist’s ride on a different level to the other machines here. The 740mm bar and mid-length stem create a proper power steering trail set-up, and the Race Face logos are something to show off to show your friends. Even with a quick-release rather than 15mm axle the RockShox Recon fork is a great find at this price, and the Performance compound Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres underline control better than we’d expected. Even the Shimano XT/SLX/Deore gears are great for the money, though the lack of a clutch on the rear mech becomes obvious on the first rough section. The own-brand through-axle double crankset and saddle are good quality kit too, and overall we’d not be disappointed to find this spec on an £850 bike rather than a £650 one. The ride It’s not just value for money that the kit boosts either – it also makes the Heist feel like a much more expensive bike out on the trails. The 740mm bar feels huge after some of the skinny, old-school XC bars of the other bikes here and was the only one to get wedged in the trail handlebar tree gauge on the skinny alley between our workshop and the woods. Once Diamondback Heist £690 onto proper trails, the way control stays firmly in your hands even when the rest of the bike is sliding around behind you gives tons of confidence. That lets you push harder, and grin wider, knowing you can correct and save an overoptimistic dare before it ends in disaster. The Recon fork surprised us with how well it coped with headlong attacks on wooden steps and rock gardens too. Simple but effective adjustable rebound damping means the 120mm (4.7in) stroke stayed composed and predictable for much longer than expected. Unlike the coil and elastomer sprung forks of the other bikes on test, the pressurised air spring can be adjusted easily for rider weight and aggression levels too. That meant predictable ride height, bump response and reliably consistent communication for steering and braking without rattling our eyes out of our skulls or bruising our palms. Having been betrayed by Performance compound Schwalbe tyres before, we were wary of the Nobby Nics at first. The chunky-knob tread meant they actually hung on better than the other rubber on test across every surface though, and Mountain Biking uk 123 With development funds limited, it’s perhaps inevitable most lower priced mountain bikes are relatively generic, slightly dated cross country designs which fght for attention via componentry, not ride character. That means Diamond Back’s Heist really stands out in the shop and – more importantly – on the trail. The big rectangular frame tubes are defnitely a clue to its tough, trail persona. Even if you don’t notice the forks sit at the same relaxed angle as the DBR Myers All Mountain Hardtail, you’ll certainly feel the confdence boosting, self centring effect on the steering. It’d feel even better if you bin the 80mm stem for something shorter and ft slimmer, clamp secured grips, but the 740mm Race Face handlebar adds authority and big brand kudos. The RockShox Recon fork is a much better quality unit than you’ll normally fnd at this price, 56 > AUGUST 2016 > WHAT MOUNTAIN BIKE complete with an easily adjustable air spring, consistently controlled damping, and even a handlebar lever to lock them out on climbs. While you don’t get a through-axle like you might on a Suntour fork, the big bar and quality fork structure means you’ve still got plenty of precision to exploit the grip of the Schwalbe Nobby Nic 27.5x2.25in tyres. While they’re basic by Shimano standards, the M396 brakes are much better controlled than most in this price category. The SLX and XT gearing is something you’d only normally fnd on more expensive bikes. If you think this year’s bike is a belter, you should see how the Heist looks for 2017. Is it a real deal though? £895 One of our favourite bargain bombers goes plus for 2017 I f you’ve been paying attention to our recent reviews of gung-ho hardtails you’ll have seen a big change in what bikes are getting the rave reviews. Plus tyres (that’s 2.8-3.0in tyres on 30-40mm internal width rims) add a very obvious amount of lump and bump smoothing ‘suspension’. This hovercraft effect is particularly obvious on more affordable, price conscious bikes where the inevitably clunkier feel of simple suspension and cruder frames is smoothed over by the extra rubber blubber. Getting the extra width of plus tyres into a bike involves signifcant chassis and spec changes which inevitably means extra cost on bikes that are already cut to the bone on proft margin. That means only a few manufacturers have committed to chubby wheels on cheaper bikes despite the obvious ride advantages. Happily for UK riders, it’s brands like Alpkit, Carrera and now Diamondback who have taken the plunge. In terms of value for money for a bike you can buy from your local dealer (rather than online or Halfords) the new Heist 3.0 is an incredible package. For a start, while we’ve said that plus tyres smooth out the roughness of cheap suspension forks, the Heist actually has a very good fork for a sub £1000 bike. The RockShox Recon RL comes complete with remote lockout lever and a bolt through-axle to tame the extra wide (110mm) Boost front hub and a tapered steerer keeps it stiff in the frame. That’s a Race Face Ride cockpit on top with a sensible, tree-friendly 740mm width and steady away 60mm stem. The single ring chainset drives a durable SunRace 11-42T cassette controlled through a Shimano XT rear mech and SLX shifters for an 11-gear spread, not the 2x10 (or 1x10 if you’re lucky) compromise that dominates in this price bracket. The wheels use WTB’s benchmark, proper wide Scraper i40 rim to fatten up 2.8in WTB Ranger all-rounder tyres at both ends. Buy some Gorilla Tape and valves and you’ll be ready to go tubeless to maximise survivability and smoothness too. Then, and as if that value hasn’t already put you on the foor, you also get an internally routed dropper post included for your £900 and, like we say, it’ll all be set up The best bargain parts in the world can’t bring a dead frame or staggering zombie geometry back to life though, so is the Heist a plus on the trail or a minus? The frst thing to get straight is that this is a plus version of a standard, do everything hardtail. In other words, this isn’t a crazy long, slacked out enduro style beast. That’s because Diamondback feel that most mid-range hardtail riders will want something obedient, user friendly and not too weird compared to anything they’ve ridden before. They’ve got that spot on too, with a relaxed 67-degree head angle that self corrects subtly for confdence if things get sketchy, but doesn’t put the front wheel so far away it feels like you’re chasing a wheelbarrow through the woods. The bar offers decent leverage without wedging between every tree gap, and the stem gives prompt reactions without twitching around too much on climbs. In other words, it’s not the most radical ride around compared to bikes like the Alpkit Transmitter, but it’s a user-friendly ft and feel for new or returning riders who are likely to be the main market for this machine. If you want more length than the relatively old school 580mm (medium) top tube, there’s always the option of sizing up bigger than normal as the kinked top tube keeps standover pretty good. What all riders will appreciate, though, is how much more easily a plus tyre makes the average rocky, rooty trail, particularly at slow speeds. Once you’ve got the pressure right (we ended up at around 13-15psi, on our local trails – play around with this to get it set up just right for you and your riding) and you get used to going straight rather dodging and potentially ricocheting off everything. It just rolls relentlessly over all the stuff that normally trips you up or knocks the speed out of your wheels. Add the ability to get the saddle out of the way instantly and a wide range sequential gear system for brain free shifting, and it’s just far easier to tackle technical terrain on than a conventional 27.5in tyre hardtail or even a 29er. Decent damping in the front fork means you can hit big stuff pretty hard without the front end pogoing madly too, and that’s before you turn the tyres tubeless to take their control and impact proofng to another level again.
