TGFL – Discipline Procedure Unsportsmanlike behavior: No player may act in an unsportsmanlike manner before, during, or after the game. Unsportsmanlike acts will result in a 10-yard penalty & automatic first down. Unsportsmanlike penalties are to be treated as a dead ball foul and are to be administered from the succeeding spot. Unsportsmanlike penalties may be administered for the following (as per section 4 of the NGFFL rulebook): a) abusive or insulting language or gestures, b) baiting acts or words or insignia worn which engenders ill will, c) using disconcerting acts or words prior to the snap in an attempt to interfere with A’s signal or movements, d) intentionally kicking at any player or the ball (other than a kick) or intentionally swinging an arm or fist at any player, e) leaving the field between plays or using a “hide out play” by placing a player or players near the sideline to gain an advantage unless replaced or unless with the permission of the referee, f) failing to place the ball, after if becomes dead, on the ground or immediately return it to a nearby official, g) spiking the ball or throwing the ball in the air or from the field of play, h) attempting to substitute a suspended player, i) taunting an opponent. A player receives a yellow card for committing any of the following offenses: 1. Unsportsmanlike behaviour directed at another player, sideline volunteer referees or paid referees (officials) 2. Aggressive, derisive or vulgar comments directed at officials. 3. Persistent and unnecessary arguing with officials Players must be given a verbal warning prior to receiving a yellow card for arguing Referees can also give ‘team warnings’ that apply to all players on the team. Any player who continues to engage in unnecessary arguing after a team warning will receive a yellow card. 4. Aggressive verbal altercation with players of the opposing team This includes using demeaning words/phrases and excessive swearing 5. Persistently and purposefully infringing TGFL/NGFFL official game rules Two personal foul penalties and/or roughing the passer penalties in the same game triggers an automatic yellow card A yellow card is a 10-yard penalty and automatic first down to the opposition. Any player that receives a yellow card carry will receive an automatic 10-play cool off period during which they will not be able to play or enter the field of play for any reason. Intentional violation of this cool-off period can result in a red card being issued. The penalty period will begin on the play following the card. If the game ends after less than 10 plays after a player receives a yellow card, the remainder of the penalty will be assessed at the start of the player’s next game.
A player receives a red card for committing any of the following offenses: 1. Intentional violation of the 10-play penalty for receiving a yellow card 2. Any physically aggressive or violent conduct after a play has ended and before the next play begins 3. Any egregiously aggressive or violent behavior during a play This would include punching, non-football related physical attack of another player, or any physical contact with any intent to harm another player 4. Spits on an opponent or any other person 5. Any discriminatory, prejudicial or racial language and/or gestures that directly violates the mission statement of the TGFL The Toronto Gay Football League exists to give members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* community and their allies an opportunity to play the game of flag football regardless of skill or experience in a comfortable, safe and welcoming environment. 6. Receives a second yellow card in the same match 7. Players that receive three yellow cards in any four game period will automatically receive a red card. A red card is a 10-yard penalty and automatic first down to the opposition. Player’s receiving red cards will be ejected from the current game, and be subjected to an automatic one-game suspension. All red cards will lead to an automatic review of the code of conduct based on the TGFL ethics policy which may result in additional discipline. Any player that receives two red cards in a season will be suspended for the remainder of the season and ineligible to play in the playoffs. Players are not eligible for monetary refund for missed games due to disciplinary action resulting from the red/yellow card system. All captains are responsible for ensuring their team’s are aware of the yellow/red card system and adhere to the expected fair play behaviours of the Toronto Gay Football League.
