GCOS 7 System Features 2.1 Introduction The DPS 7000/XTA platform recognizes PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader systems as standard 8mm cartridge readers. PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader use standard commands in both interactive (GCL) and batch (JCL) languages. 2.2 Definitions and Parameters PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader are "CT/M6" cartridge readers for the DPS 7000/XTA platform. Therefore, you must manage file definition parameters in the same way as those of the DPS 7000/XTA platform. 2.2.1 Restrictions • The maximum number of files on a cartridge cannot exceed 9999. • The maximum number of records (blocks) for a file is 999 990. • The number of catalogued files may not exceed 255. 2.2.2 Sequence Number When several files have the same name, ANSI standards only allow the location of the first 255 files on the media. Beyond this number, each subsequent file must have a different name in order to be located. Access files via the following parameters: • $MFTxxx or FSN=xxx 77 A1 64UP 2-1 DLT PowerSave 320 on GCOS 7 User's Guide used to find a file of rank xxx (up to rank 255). • $MFT or FSN=ANY used to find the first file with the name specified. 2.2.3 Start / Stop Mode PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader are mainly designed for back up (streaming) purposes. Nevertheless the Start / Stop operating mode is similar to that used by other types of cartridge readers and can be used with all standard data management utilities. 1 2.2.4 3 IMPORTANT: 3 CT/M6-type peripherals do not support the REPEAT option in the STEPOPT parameter. File Closure Options The END parameter is used to specify the required file state at the end of a step. On PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader, this option is managed in the same way as on a standard "CT/M6" cassette reader. • END = LEAVE The cartridge is not automatically rewound (default option) when the file is closed, but is left in its current position, ready to process subsequent files. If this option is not selected when writing / reading consecutive files, the controller’s fast positioning function will compensate (only with SDLT I cartridges). • END = UNLOAD The cartridge is rewound and automatically unloaded at the end of a step. 1 2.3 3 IMPORTANT: 3 This option must be selected for PowerSave 320 Loader in order to initiate the insertion of the next cartridge. Compatibility and User Visibility PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader are "CT/M6" cartridge readers for the DPS 7000/XTA platform. 2-2 77 A1 64UP GCOS 7 System Features VOLPREP (JCL) / PREPARE_TAPE (GCL) (alias PRPTP) must be performed as usual. 1 3 IMPORTANT: 3 • Recording density is totally independent of compression. • Compression is implemented in the DLT drive itself and the same algorithm is used on all versions (full compatibility). • Compression increases transfer rate (< 32 MB/s instead of 16 MB/s). 77 A1 64UP 2-3 DLT PowerSave 320 on GCOS 7 User's Guide ❑ 2-4 77 A1 64UP 3. Galileo-2FC Controller on PowerSave 320 Systems The Galileo-2FC controller is one of the PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader unit. It is equipped with a Fibre Channel interface designed specifically for the DPS 7000/XTA (Diane) platform. The Galileo-2FC controller: • Interfaces with the DPS 7000/XTA platform. • Emulates a standard 8mm sequential backup peripheral in relation to the host system. • Performs fast positioning on files (on SDLT I cartridges only). • Controls the SDLT 320 tape drive. The Galileo-2FC controller enables you to configure PowerSave 320 and PowerSave 320 Loader. Unlike conventional sequential backup systems, the Galileo-2FC controller allows fast positioning on files on SDLT I cartridges only. Large capacity SDLT media can therefore be used in full without loss of performance in terms of file access times. The Galileo-2FC controller performance is not reliant on the host system for continuous streaming and is therefore highly effective for real-time data or log file recording. The controller microcode version is f4.x for Galileo-2FC, where x is an unspecified variable. 77 A1 64UP 3-1 DLT PowerSave 320 on GCOS 7 User's Guide 3.1 Physical description of the Galileo-2FC Controller 3.1.1 Front Panel The figure bellow shows the Galileo-2FC Controller front panel: XFER: amber LED ON: XFER ON ERR Blue LED ERR: Red LED + Figure 3-1 3.1.1.1 SEL Front of the Galileo-2FC Controller LEDs on the Front Panel XFER LED (amber LED) The XFER LED indicates activity on the SCSI buses and/or the FC link. CAUTION: NEVER move the write-protect tab once the cartridge is loaded in the PowerSave 320 drive. Non-compliance with this instruction will result in system failure. • To enable write protection, slide the write-protect tab to the LEFT. Once the orange rectangle is visible, the cartridge is protected and existing data on the tape cannot be overwritten, nor can additional data be appended. • To disable write protection, slide the write-protect tab to the RIGHT. Once the orange rectangle is no longer visible, the cartridge is no longer protected and existing data on the tape can be overwritten and additional data can be appended. The figure bellow shows how to slide the write-protect tab: Orange rectangle visible Write protection enabled Slide the Write-Protect tab to the LEFT to enable write protection. Slide the Write-Protect tab to the RIGHT to disable write protection. Avoid using soft lead pencils that may leave deposits or particles. • Slide prepared labels into the slots intended for this purpose. Labels must not be placed outside these slots as they may tear when the cartridge is inserted and damage or contaminate the drive. • For easy identification, the volume name can be written on the edge of the cartridge. 6.3.2 Care and Handling • Only use cartridges in perfect condition. • Never touch the tape inside the cartridge. • Do not expose the cartridge to intense sunlight, electromagnetic radiation or rapid changes of temperature. • Carry cartridges in their protective cases. • When mailing cartridges, protect with shockproof packaging adapted for computer data (mark Recommendations for Use on the package). 6.3.3 Acclimating Stabilizing the tape cartridge following transportation or storage overcomes the effects of thermal expansion or contraction: • Always allow the tape cartridge time to acclimate to the operating environment. • Store the tape cartridge in the operating environment one hour for each hour it spent outside the operating environment, up to a maximum of eight hours. • Do not expose the tape cartridge to sudden temperature changes while in use. 6-6 77 A1 64UP Glossary A A Ampere.
