Icon Used for the micro-invasive treatment of smooth surface and proximal caries lesions., Icon can be used to treat lesions into the first third of dentin (D-1). In one patient visit, and with no drilling, it can arrest the progression of early enamel lesions and white spot caries-like lesions. Dmg america • dmg-america.com

Description
Working and Setting Time
Icon by DMG America is a completely new technology and treatment option. It fills and, reinforces, demineralized enamel and incipient caries without drilling or sacrificing healthy tooth structure. Icon provides a highly esthetic alternative to microabrasion and other restorative treatments for cariogenic white spot lesions (WSL). WSL infiltrated by Icon take on the appearance of the surrounding healthy enamel. It is not intended to replace remineralization techniques or the attempt to remineralize early lesions. It is intended for when the doctor has decided that remineralization is not working and the drill is not yet necessary.
According to inventors Sebastian Paris, DDS, and Hendrik Meyer-Lückel, DDS, PhD, MPH, resin infiltration utilizes the concept of capillary forces—“similar to water soaking up into a sponge.” The pseudointact surface layer of the caries is first eroded by etching the lesion for 120 seconds with 15% hydrochloric acid gel. Incomplete removal of the layer would otherwise hamper penetration. The lesion is then desiccated with ethanol and air blown. The infiltrant—a proprietary resin—is applied, penetrating into the porous lesion via the capillary forces.
Manufacturers Instructions
Due to the low viscosity of the Icon-Infiltrant, no adjustments to the surfaces of the restoration are needed. It is recommended to polish surfaces with polishing strip.

great. I used it on smooth surface.” “Great product for post ortho. White Spot Lesions.” “Would like both types of tips in each box.” “Should have determined the tightness of the contact point at time of discovery not at the time of preparation—recommend an ortho separator a day prior to enhance access.”
Assistant Comments

all those ‘we’ll just watch it lesions’— watch it do what?” “Finally a procedure that can prevent an incipient ‘watch’ lesion from becoming a ‘restorative procedure.’ ” “Needs to be radiopaque for radiographs.”
The manufacturer’s instructions were accurate and understandable. None of the Evaluators had a problem with following the instructions.
Dispensing/Mixing Tips Most of the evaluators felt the Icon-Smooth Surface syringe tips were easy to use.

However, the Icon- Proximal syringe tips were more challenging. Also many, at first, felt the use of the syringes themselves to be awkward. In dentistry we are used to a push and pull application, not a twist and turn, so it has a small learning curve. DMG designed the syringes and tips in this manner to ensure the materials are applied gently and slowly on to the tooth surface.

Step by Step ies and white spot lesions. Many of the Evaluation team were skeptical about Icon and did not think it would work. Almost all were pleasantly surprised at both the outcome and simplicity of usage. Most used and preferred the smooth surface application due to its ease of access and application. Some evaluators said they etched more than once to get even better results on White Spot Lesions. Case selection is everything for Icons success. Icon works most effectively on incipient interproximal and non cavitated white spot lesions .It is not for cavitated lesions because the infiltrate is a low viscosity unfilled resin, making it a poor choice for a cavitated lesion but an excellent choice for incipient lesions. Though not all lesions disappeared 100%, all lesions were more than 50% improved. CPS Team gives ICON by DMG a 5 Diamond rating. To read other product reviews please go to www.cpsmagazine. com
