Secretary's Message Dear DMS Colleagues, Social networking has grown to be about more than just connecting with classmates or sharing vacation photos. It’s become an invaluable asset to our professional lives. I would like to share some interesting tid bits on how our DMS social media sites are a great resource for you professionally and the agency.
Craig J. Nichols DMS Agency Secretary
The Florida DMS Facebook page provides you daily posts about state and agency news and programs. You can also access the photo galleries of DMS’ events and infographics. You don’t need a Twitter account to view the tweets at @FloridaDMS and frequent updates keep you up-to-the-minute on state and DMS news. If you’re particularly interested in a topic, look for a word with the “#” hashtag in front; click on the word and it will reveal all related posts. The Florida Department of Management Services Linkedin company page shares DMS job and business opportunities. If you select “Florida Department of Management Services” as your employer on Linkedin, it will connect you to the company page and, by extension, all other DMS colleagues using Linkedin. The Office of Communication invites you to become a link in the communications chain by retweeting DMS Twitter updates and sharing Linkedin and Facebook posts. This will inform your friends, family and community about the great things we do here at DMS and will help spread the word across Florida. If you have questions or concerns about social media use, please contact our Community Outreach Coordinator, Rachel Lawley, at 850-410-0804. Sincerely, CRAIG

The 2014-15 Florida State Employees' Charitable Campaign is in full swing at DMS. Visit the FSECC website for paperless pledging through the Giving Nexus. The system allows for cash, check and payroll donations and automatically generates a receipt. It’s as simple as “Point, Click, and Pledge!”

Tech Tip: Combat Information Leaks You may have heard about the recent leak of 7 million usernames and passwords used for Dropbox, a cloud storage service. Attackers used stolen credentials to attempt to log in to multiple Internet sites. The Dropbox attack highlights the importance of password security. This is a great time to begin regularly changing your passwords. It is for the same reason you have to change your passwords on your computer here at DMS, and many other state systems, like People First. By regularly changing your password, you lessen any potential threat from information leaks. Make it unique; use a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols; and avoid using anything obvious—like family members, pets, birthdays or anniversaries. A strong password does not contain complete words. When possible, sign up for two-step verification, sometimes called twofactor authentication. Also, avoid reusing the same username or password for multiple sites. Think of it this way, you wouldn’t use the same lock and key for your home, car and safety deposit box, so vary your cyber “locks and keys” as well. [Return to top]
