DO A BIKE AND HELMET CHECK BIKE FIT: When sitting on the bike with feet on the pedals, there should be a slight bend in the knee when the pedal is closest to the ground. BIKE VISIBILITY: The bike should have reflectors on the front, back, and both wheels. If riding when after dusk, there should also be lights on the front and back. ABC QUICK CHECK: A is for Air, check the air pressure and make sure tires aren’t worn out B is for Brakes, spin each wheel and apply brakes to check proper function C is for cranks, chains, and cogs, The crank arms hold the pedals should be tight apply pressure on each side (if there is movement the bolt most likely needs tightened), the chain should look like metal (if black or grimy clean them up and apply fresh lubricant), the cogs are the gears in the back and should be clean like the chain, and allow the chains to run freely over them Talk with your parents .Are you allowed to ride by yourself or with friends? Dress to be seen. Wear brightly colored clothes and reflective gear. Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you. Tie and tuck. Loose laces and pant legs can get caught up in your bike and cause you to crash. Tie shoelaces and tuck the hanging ends into your shoe, and tie wide pant legs with a reflective strap or tuck them into socks. WHILE RIDING YOUR BIKE Look and listen for traffic. Also, look for things that could make you fall, like pot holes and storm grates. Never use a cell phone or wear headphones. Watch for vehicles going in and out of driveways. Keep both hands on the handlebars, except when signaling. Carry books and other items in a backpack or bag designed to fit on a bicycle. Stop before crossing the street, entering a road, or turning. Look left, right, left, and behind you for traffic, including pedestrians, bicycles, and cars. Be predictable. Ride in a straight line, not in and out of cars. Use hand signals. LAKEWOOD BICYCLE LAWS 101 1. Every person riding a bicycle upon a street shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle 2. A person operating a bicycle shall upon the permanent and regular seat attached, they may not carry any other person upon such bicycle other than upon a firmly attached and regular seat. (no handlebar or peg passengers) 3. At no time shall a bicyclist under the age of eight years operate a bicycle on Berea Road; Detroit Avenue; Madison Avenue; Warren Road between Franklin Boulevard and Detroit Avenue; or West 117 Street, unless while under the supervision of an adult. 4. Every person riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to a pedestrian. 5. Cyclists yield the right of way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. This audible signal may be given by voice or by a bell 6. No person shall operate a bicycle on a sidewalk at a speed greater than an ordinary walk when approaching or entering a crosswalk or approaching or crossing a driveway if a vehicle is approaching the crosswalk or driveway. 7. Persons riding bicycles or motorcycles upon a roadway shall ride not more than two abreast in a single lane, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as possible obeying all traffic rules applicable to vehicles and exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. 8. A bicycle may be equipped with a device capable of giving an audible signal, except that a bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a bicycle any siren or whistle 9. Every bicycle from sunset to sunrise will be equipped with:  A white headlight/ lamp mounted on the front the bicycle visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front; and three hundred feet to the sides.  A red reflector or red lamp emitting either flashing or steady red light on the rear of the bicycle that shall be visible from all distances from one hundred feet to six hundred feet to the rear  Additional lamps and reflectors may be used in addition to those required except that red lamps and red reflectors shall not be used on the front of the bicycle and white lamps and white reflectors shall not be used on the rear of the bicycle.  Every bicycle shall be equipped with an adequate brake when used on a street. 10. Whenever any minor under the age of eighteen years operates a bicycle or motorized bicycle in violation of any Section of this Traffic Code, the bicycle may be seized by any member of the Police Department and impounded. 11. LAKEWOOD HELMET LAW: No person under the age of eighteen shall operate a bicycle within the City unless the person is wearing a protective helmet on their head, with the chin strap fastened under the chin. Such helmet shall be fitted to the size of the operator. This requirement shall also apply to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat which is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle. Whoever violates this shall be fined in an amount not to exceed twenty-five dollars ($25.00). For each and every subsequent violation of this, a fine not to exceed fifty dollars ($50.00) shall be imposed.
