Do you have protection? Over ninety percent of all automation failures can be attributed to power related problems. In many cases you don’t even know it’s occurred until your equipment fails. Often there is little or no visual sign of damage because the damage is to processors and other sensitive components. The damage caused primarily to sensitive logic control boards can be and often is non repairable. Worse still is damage caused by power related problems are not covered under warranty and very often not covered by insurance - not to mention the inconvenience and delays whilst waiting for repairs. WHAT SORT OF EVENTS CAUSE THESE PROBLEMS? Surges - A surge is a transient electrical fluctuation that happens in a fraction of a second and can cause serious damage to electronic and electro mechanical equipment. Power surges can result in permanent damage to hardware and other electrical equipment. Sags / Brownouts - These are short term, low voltage brownouts, created by large loads, lightning, utility switching or equipment failure. Sags/brownouts cause equipment crashes and can cause equipment damage. Spikes - Also called transients or instantaneous surges. Spikes cause data corruption, data lockups and significant equipment damage. RF Noise - Creates a rough and jagged sine wave. RF noise can even be generated by normal computer operation. It causes lockups, program freezes and data corruption. Waveform Distortion - Most common is the harmonic distortion, which causes a doubling of the normal sine wave. This condition can be triggered by factory equipment or utility power. Complete Outage / Blackout - Described as 0 volts condition for longer than half a cycle. Unprotected equipment can suffer badly during an outage.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT? Surge / Noise Filter – A surge and noise filter is designed to protect control boards and other sensitive equipment by stopping the damaging occurrences from proceeding down the incoming power line and making it to your equipment. Basically they are installed between your incoming power line and your control equipment and react in less than one nano second to any surge or spike as well as actively filtering your power to ensure that your equipment receives only clean power. CM90 – The CM90 is an Australian made product which suits our automation equipment perfectly and comes with a six year replacement warranty. It is suitable for all 240 volt automation equipment drawing less than 16 amps. The CM90 is a must for all industrial and commercial sites where the power is notoriously dirty and should be considered on all residential sites in particular those experience unexplained abnormal operation.
