Read Instructions - All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the appliance is operated. Antenna - This product is designed for use with the antenna attached and should not be connected to any other external antennas. 14. Object and Liquid Entry - Care should be taken so objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings. 16. Damage Requiring Service - The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel only when: a) The power supply cord of the plug has been damaged. b) Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the appliance. c) The appliance has been exposed to rain. d) The appliance does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance. e) The appliance has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged. 17. Servicing - The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. CONNECTION 1. Connect the speaker wires to the speaker terminals (R + L) (41) located on the rear of the unit. Push the right red socket switch upwards to expose the hole in which to insert the red speaker cable – insert the wire and release the switch. Push down the right black socket switch and insert the black cable wire. Repeat this process for the other speaker, ensuring only the metal part of the wire is inserted. 2. Connect the power cord (42) to a 230V AC Mains outlet. 3. ….. ….. : ….. ….. will be flashing on the dimmed LCD Display (1), and the Red STANDBY LED Indicator (3) will light up, which indicates the unit is connected to the mains power and the system is ready for use. 4. Switch the unit on with the main On/Off button (4) - the Red standby LED will go off , the display will light up and show TUNE (FM radio function) first and sound will be coming out from the speakers, which indicates the unit is correctly connected to the power supply and the system is ready to play your music. 5. Press the Standby/On button (17) to switch the unit on - the LCD display, as well as the blue LED light around the VOLUME control (21) will light up. “TUNE” shows briefly on the display and sound will be coming from the speakers. Note: The unit is defaulted to start with the radio (Tuner) function after switching on. 6. Press the FUNCTION button (18) repeatedly to switch to other functions – on the display it will show: CD-2 --- BUSY, then CD 1 --- BUSY – PHON – TAPE – AUX and eventually TUNE again. NOTE: If you find the unit switches itself off regularly, this is not a fault. Due to the ErP stage 2 requirements for the Protection of the Environment when connected to the mains power, as a power saving measure the unit will switch itself off automatically if no music has been playing for over 15 minutes. Switch the unit off and then on again to re-activate it. SETTING THE CLOCK 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Make sure the unit is in Standby mode (3). Press and hold the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button (5) a second, the display will start flashing. Press the Skip/TUNE or button (13) to select the appropriate hour format (12hr/24hr). To set the HOUR: Press the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button again, the first 2 digits will be flashing. Press the Skip/Tuning or button (13) to set the correct hour. Press the ”MEM/CLK-ADJ” button to store the correct hour. To set the MINUTES: The 3rd and 4th digits “00” will then be flashing, press the Skip/Tuning (11) to set the correct Minutes 8. Press “MEM/CLK-ADJ” to store the correct minutes. or button LISTENING TO THE RADIO Manual Tuning 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Switch the unit on with the MAIN On/Off button (4). Press the FUNCTION button (24) to select “TUNER” mode. Select the desired band with the BAND/ button (11). To tune into the required station press the TUNE down or TUNE up button (11). Rotate the VOLUME knob (10) to adjust the volume level (ranging from “0 – 30” – shown on the display). Auto Tuning 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press the FUNCTION button (24) to select “TUNER” mode Select the desired band with the BAND/ button (18). Press and hold the TUNE or button (11) for 1-2 seconds and then release it. The unit will start searching automatically and stop when a radio station has been found. Repeat step 2 until the desired radio station has been reached. Rotate the VOLUME knob (10) to adjust the volume level (ranging from “0 – 30” as shown on the display). E-3 Preset Stations You can store up to 50 radio stations into memory (FM-30 / (AM) MW-20). To do so, follow the procedure below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Select the Tuner mode with the FUNCTION button (24). Turn to the desired radio station with the “MANUAL” or “AUTO” tuning method as described above. Press the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button (5) to enable programming and the “MEM” indicator appears on the display. Press the “FOLDER/PRE-UP/DOWN” button (8/9) to select the desired station memory for storage. Press the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button again to confirm the setting. Repeat steps 2 to 5 above to store other stations. If you wish to return to normal Tuner mode, do not press any keys. You can now select the pre-set stations in the set order by pressing the “PRE –UP/DOWN” (8/9) button. FM & FM-stereo reception Press the “Stop  ST-MONO.” button (12) repeatedly and the FM programmes will be received in mono or stereo mode alternately. If stereo signals are weak, it is preferable to receive an FM programme in mono sound.  If a stereo signal is being received, the Stereo indicator “ ” will appear on the LCD display to show the radio is now receiving an FM stereo programme.  Hints for best radio reception: - AM (= MW): The receiver has a built-in AM bar antenna. If AM reception is weak, slightly rotate or re-positioning of the unit will usually improve the Medium Wave reception. FM: The receiver has an FM wire antenna (43) hanging at the rear of the cabinet. This wire should be totally unravelled and extended for best reception. TURNTABLE OPERATION Getting Started  Slide back the Phono Cover OPEN Switch (36) to open the turntable cover - then gently lift up the cover. Caution: Do not lift the cover too high to avoid damaging the hinge.  Remove the white stylus protector by pulling it gently forward and off the Red Stylus holder.  DO NOT DISCARD THE STYLUS PROTECTOR, ALWAYS REFIT IT after playing a record to avoid damaging the stylus tip on the rubber turntable mat when the tone arm is stored back on the spindle adaptor. Notes: The stylus is a consumable and is not covered by the Warranty.  Lift up the TONE ARM (37) with the Pick-up Holder (39) and move it to the right hand side.  Then lift off and remove the Spindle Adaptor (38) from the unit. If you need to use it when playing a 45rpm record (‘single’), place it on the Turntable Spindle first. Remove it when playing 33 or 78rpm records.  After playing your records, return the spindle adaptor to the recess (38) for storage and place the Tone Arm on it to secure it before closing the cover. PLAYING A RECORD 1. Select “PHONO” function with the Function button (24). 2. Press the Phono On/Off button (35) - the Red Phono LED Indicator (34) will light up. 3. Set the speed selector (33) to the correct position depending on the record to be played (i.e.33/45/78rpm). 4. Lift the tone arm from the rest and move it to the right away from the turntable platter – make sure it does not click or the turntable will start rotating. 5. Place the record on the turntable platter [for some 45rpm records you may need to use the Spindle Adaptor (38)]. 6. Click the tone arm slightly to the right - the platter will start rotating. 7. Gently place the tone arm needle on the position where you wish the record to start playing. 8. Adjust the volume (10) to the desired level. 9. At the end of the record, the platter will keep turning – press the Phono On/Off button (35) to stop it rotating, then lift and move the tone arm to the right again. 10. Change to another record if required, ensuring the speed selector is set correctly for the next record to be played. 11. When you have finished playing your record(s), with the tone arm to the right of the record, remove the record and place the spindle adaptor back in the recess (38). 12. With the Phono Power On/Off button (35) switched to ‘Off’, the Red Phono ‘Power On’ LED will go off. 13. Always refit the White Stylus Protector and store the tone arm back on the spindle adaptor grooves. 14. Gently close the cover. E-4 LISTENING TO CASSETTE TAPE General operation Press the “FUNCTION” button (24) to select and activate the TAPE Mode, the LCD display will show “TAPE”: Cassette Playback The system will start playback automatically after a pre-recorded cassette tape has been inserted into the Cassette slot of the unit (see line drawing below for the correct direction in which to insert the tape). The “Tape Forward / EJECT “ button (21) will stay at full height position while playing the tape. Stop and Ejection Press the “Tape Forward / EJECT“ button (21) completely inwards - the cassette tape will be ejected though the Cassette Door Cover (22). The “Tape Forward / Eject“ button will stay at the lowest height position. Fast forward Press the “TAPE FORWARD / EJECT “ (21) button halfway in during Playback Mode - the tape will wind in a forward direction. The button will stay at mid-height position. Slightly press the “Tape Forward / EJECT “ button in again to resume normal playback - the “Tape Forward / Eject“ button will resume at the highest position while playing. Notes: - Make sure the direction is correct when inserting a tape into the cassette slot. Some searching noise will be heard, this is quite normal. The system cannot perform the normal playback function during Fast Forward mode. It is strongly recommended the cassette tape is removed from the Cassette Player slot after each use - don’t leave the cassette tape inside the system when you do not intend to play it. Cassette Care Two common causes of trouble experienced when using cassettes are: 1. Tape jamming, leading to uneven speed during playback. 2. Tape entangling, when the tape wraps itself around vital parts of the mechanism. To avoid these problems occurring, take the following precautions: a) Check that there are no loose layers of tape visible through the cassette centre window (see fig. 1). b) Take up any loose layers (using a pencil or ballpoint pen with hexagonal barrel) before inserting the cassette (see fig. 2) into the mechanism. Notes: If the cassette feels tight whilst performing this operation (see fig. 2), the tape may be jamming due to ridges formed in the winding of the tape (visible through the centre window). In most cases, these may be removed by fast rewinding of the cassette from one end to the other, turning it over and repeating this action again. Do not expose cassettes to direct sunlight, dust or oil, and do not touch the tape surfaces. Compact Disc Care To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the centre of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges. Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off the disc’s recorded surface with a soft cloth. Unlike conventional Vinyl or Shellac records, compact discs have no grooves to collect dust and microscopic debris, so a gentle wipe with a soft, lint-free dry and clean cloth should remove most particles. Wipe in a straight line from the inside to the outside of the disc. Never use detergents or abrasive cleaners to clean the disc. If necessary, use a CD cleaning kit. Small dust particles and light stains will have absolutely no effect on sound reproduction quality. Never fix labels to the surface of compact discs or write on them, except gently with a special CD-R Pen. E-5 PLAYING A COMPACT DISC/MP3 DISC IN The system is equipped with two CD players, the function for information will show in the top part of the LCD display:  1. 2. 3. is described below and all the CD 1 playback Getting Started Press the Function button (24) to select, “CD 1” and “NO” will appear on the LCD display. Press the “CD 1 Open/Close ” button (14) to open the CD 1 door (30). “OPEN” shows briefly on the display. Place an audio CD with the printed side facing up inside the tray and close the CD 1 door - “CLOS” shows briefly on the display (or “NO” if no CD has been placed in the tray). 4. The unit will start reading the disc, the LCD display will show the total number of tracks for a second, then playback will start automatically. On the LCD display the current track number and the track time will show alternately. (the Folder number and track time will show alternately during playback of an MP3 CD).  CD 1 PLAY / PAUSE MODE / 1. If the CD 1 Play/Pause/BAND button (13) is pressed when the CD 1s not playing, the first track will be played. 2. If the Play/Pause button (13) is pressed during playback, the music will pause temporarily and the play indicator “ “ will start flashing on the LCD display. 3. Press the button again to resume normal playback. 4. If the Stop /ST/MO button (12) is pressed during playback, the music will stop playing and the display will show the total number of tracks on the Disc.  SKIP MODE (SKIP UP / SKIP DOWN ) 1. While the CD 1s playing or is paused, press the CD 1 “Skip Up” button (11) to skip to the next track - the track number will be displayed. It will then play this track or remain paused. 2. Press the CD 1 Skip Down button (11) to go back to the previous track- this will play or remain paused.  PLAYING AN MP3-CD 1. Press the “FOLDER PRE-UP“ button (8), the folder number will go up. 2. Press the CD 1 “ Skip up“ or “ Skip down“ (11) button, the track number will change. 3. When the desired track has been selected, press the CD 1 “Play/Pause” /BAND button (13) to start playback. MP3 Track Format Requirements: - MP3 Bit rate: 32 kbps ~ 256 kbps. The performance of playing an MP3-CD file varies from that of a pre-recorded Audio CD - the quality depends on the method of recording. REPEAT / RANDOM MODE Press the CD 1 PLAY MODE button (6) repeatedly (before or during playback) to play a file, folder (MP3 disc only) or all files repeatedly or in random order - in the following order: FOR CD (1) repeat 1 Play mode Repeat track Repeat all Random Off mode (2) repeat all tracks (3) random (4) off mode (3) repeat all (4) random Indicator on LCD display RAN -------------- FOR MP3-CD (1) repeat 1 Play Mode Repeat a single track Repeat single folder Repeat all tracks Random mode Off mode (2) repeat 1 folder Indicator on USB/SD operation display RAN ----------------- E-6 (5) off mode  Repeat play With this function you can listen to a desired file or folder over and over again.  Random play With this function you can listen to all files in any (random) order. CD/MP3-CD PROGRAMMING (BY REMOTE CONTROL) Up to 20 tracks can be programmed for CD (100 tracks for MP3-CD files) using the Remote Control. Before programming, ensure the system is in Stop mode. 1. Press the FUNCTION button to select CD 1 mode and stop playback . 2. Press the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button (58), “ MEM “ will appear on the display. It will also indicate the program number and track number digits for the track to be programmed. 3. Select a track by pressing the Skip Up TUNE/ or Skip Down /TUNE buttons (58) on the Remote. 4. Press the “MEM/CLK-ADJ” button to store the track into memory. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to enter additional files into the memory if required. 6. When all the desired files have been programmed, press the CD1 Play/Pause button (13) to play the files in the designated order. 7. To cancel the programmed files, press the “CD Stop ” button (12) until “MEM“ disappears from the display. REMOTE CONTROL SECTION (58) PLAYING A COMPACT DISC IN CD2 The playback information for CD2 will appear in the bottom section of the LCD display. Getting started 1. Press the Function button (24) to select CD 2 mode, the LCD display will show “ CD-2 ” then “ --- bUSY “ for a second, then change to “NO DISC”. 2. Then press the “CD 2 Open/Close ” button (20) to open the CD 2 door (31). 3. Place an audio CD with the printed side facing up inside the tray and then close the CD tray . 4. The unit will start reading the disc, the display bottom area will show “bUSY“ and then display the total number of tracks and total playing time of the disc. Play / Pause mode 1. Press the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button (19) to start playback, the first track will start playing. 2. To interrupt play, press the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button once, the playing time will freeze on the LCD display, press it again to resume normal playback.  Stop mode If “CD 2 Stop “ button (18) is pressed during play or pause mode, the disc in CD 2 will stop playing and show the total number of tracks on the CD Recorder operation LCD display.  Skip mode (skip up / skip down ) 1. While a CD 1s playing or paused, if the “CD 2 Skip up ” button (17) is pressed, it will go to the next track, the display will show the track number and play it. 2. While a CD 1s playing or paused, if the “CD 2 Skip down ” button (17) is pressed, it will go back to the previous track and play it. IMPORTANT NOTES: When changing a disc, always press the “CD 2 Stop ” button (18) first so that the CD 2 Recorder operation display shows the original information - before pressing the “CD 2 Open/Close ” button (20)! - The reaction time of the CD Recorder is longer than that of a normal CD player due to the complexity of the system. If this happens, please disconnect the unit from the mains, let it rest for about 15 minutes and then re-start it. This should hopefully re-set the unit. The reading and playback time of a CD-R(W) disc may vary from brand to brand. There may encounter problems caused by the incompatibility of the disc used: recommended brands of CD-R(W) disc are for instance TDK, Maxell, Sony, Fuji, and other good quality discs. This device is only designed for recording to normal Audio CD format - it does not record to MP3/WMA format. E-7 REPEAT MODE for CD 2 (on the Remote Control only) Repeat play (by remote control) Press the repeat/random button before or during playback, a single track or all the tracks can be played in difference mode as follows: (1) Repeat all track Play mode Repeat all Repeat 1 Off mode (2) Repeat 1 (3) Off mode Indicator on CD/CD Recorder operation display area -------------- CD 2 DISC PROGRAMMING (on the Remote Control only) Up to 32 tracks can be programmed to play in CD 2. Make sure CD 2 is stopped  (50) first before starting. 1. Select CD 2 mode (24) and stop the disc from playing  (50). 2. Press the CD 2 “PROGRAM” button of CD 2 on the remote control, the “ PROG “ indicator will show on the display. On the LCD display it will also indicate the program number (P-01) and the digits of the track numbers to be programmed. 3. Select a desired track by pressing the skip up or down buttons. 4. Press the “ PROGRAM ” button again to store the track into memory. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to enter additional tracks into the memory if necessary. 6. When all the desired tracks have been programmed, press the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button to play the disc in designated order. 7. To cancel the programmed file, press the CD 2 “Stop”  (50) button on the remote handset until the “PROG“ indicator has disappeared from LCD display. Notes: After playing the programmed songs, it is possible to delete a programmed track after it has started playing, starting with the last one down to the first one: 1. Press the CD 2 Stop  button (50) to make sure the unit is in stop mode first. 2. Press the “CLEAR“ button (57) repeatedly on the remote control – this will delete the programmed tracks one by one from the memory. CD 2 RECORDING FUNCTION (from PHONO / AUX / TAPE / CD) Apart from the CD 2 playback function, this CD 2 Player/ “Burner” can also record to and “burn” a CD, either from CD 1/ Phono/Aux/Tape mode. Note: All recorded tracks will be recorded in AUDIO-CD format. Before starting this process (for all modes), select CD 2 function (24), press the CD 2 Open/Close button (20) to open the CD 2 door (31) and place a blank recommended brand CD-R or CD-RW disc* in the tray. IMPORTANT NOTES – READ BEFORE STARTING RECORDING: 1. It is only possible to record on a blank disc* – to make sure it is, check that after placing it in the CD 2 tray (31), the “NO TOC“ indicator (= “No Table of Contents”) shows on the LCD display. 2. Before starting recording, please refer to the “TRACK SEPARATION” section in this Instruction Manual for instructions on how to separate the tracks during recording. [See B ii) in Recording Settings] 3. A “CD-R” disc can be recorded on only once and cannot be erased or re-recorded on. 4. The playback quality of either a CD-R or CD-RW disc varies between different brands of Audio CD player. 5. The revolving speed of the CD 2 Burner is higher than that of a normal CD mechanism, therefore some mechanical noise and vibration of the unit cabinet may occur during operation. Please note this is not a malfunction of the system. 6. Due to the variety in the quality and the compatibility of CD-R(W) discs available, please change to another brand if you find you cannot record on the one used or the performance is not very stable. HOW TO MANUALLY EJECT A CD FROM CD 2 Due to the complexity of the CD burner mechanism, if the power is interrupted or if you notice a problem occurring during the CD burning process, the system will be locked and the CD tray may not eject when the CD 2 Open/Close button (20) is pressed. If that happens it will be necessary to manually eject the CD tray to retrieve the CD, as follows: E-8 1. Turn OFF the power to the unit first. Do not manually open the tray when there is power to the drive! 2. Locate the Manual Eject Hole (32) on the front panel below the CD 2 tray, as indicated by the arrow in the line drawing. 3. Carefully insert a stiff wire (for instance a straightened paper clip) into the CD 2 Manual Eject Hole. 4. When resistance is felt, gently press harder until the drive tray opens slightly. 5. Gently pull the tray out the rest of the way by hand to expose the CD and remove this. 6. Re-connect the unit to the mains and restart the system - then repeat the burning /recording process again. A) CD RECORDING MODE i) CD Recording from Phono 1. Press the Function button (24) to select Phono (record player). 2. Place a vinyl record you wish to record to CD on the turntable and get it ready for playback. 3. Press the “CD 2 “ REC“ button (29) and then the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button (19) to confirm recording until the play “ “ & “ “ indicators show on the CD Recorder operation display. 4. After a few seconds, the CD Recorder display will show the numbers of the Time Counter – recording has now started. 5. Now start playback of the record (Phono), separating the tracks during recording if required. 6. When the recording has finished, press the “ CD 2 Stop ” button (18) and then stop playback of the vinyl record. 7. Finalize the recorded disc, as described elsewhere in this manual. ii) CD Recording from Cassette Tape 1. Press the Function button (24) to select TAPE (Cassette Player). 2. Place a pre-recorded cassette tape in the cassette player slot (22), ready to play back the track(s) you wish to record – but do not push it all the way in yet. 3. Press the “CD 2 REC “ button (29) and then the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button (19) until the play indicator “ “ shows on the CD Recorder operation display. 4. After a few seconds, the CD Recorder operation display will show the numbers of the Time Counter – recording has now started. 5. At this point, push the tape into the cassette mechanism to start playback of the track(s) you wish to record. 6. After recording has finished, press the “CD 2 Stop ” button (18) and then stop playback of the cassette tape. 7. Remove the cassette from the player when finished. 8. Finalize the recorded disc if you wish it to play it in another CD Player - as described elsewhere in this manual. iii) CD Recording from an Audio CD in CD 1 1. Press the Function button (24) to select CD 1 mode. 2. Press the CD 1 “ open/close button” (14), open the drawer and insert the pre-recorded Audio CD you wish to record on a blank CD. 3. Press the “CD 2 REC“ button (29) and then the “CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19) until the play indicator “ “ shows on the CD Recorder operation display. 4. After a few seconds, the CD Recorder operation display will show the numbers of the Time Counter - recording has now started. 5. Now press the “CD 1 Skip up or down button“ (11) to choose the track you wish to record, then press the “CD 1 Play/Pause ” button (13) to start playback of the track to be recorded. 6. If recording the complete CD, separate the tracks if required. 7. After recording has finished, first press the “CD 1 Stop ” button (12) to stop the CD playing, and then the “CD 2 Stop  ” button (18) to stop the recording. 8. “Finalize” the recorded disc if you wish it to play it in another CD Player - as described elsewhere in this manual. iv) CD Recording from Aux-in 1. Press the Function button (24) to select AUX (external device) mode. 2. Connect another audio device (such as an MP3 player, CD player, DAB Radio, etc.) via its output or headphone socket, to the 3.5mm dia. Aux-in jack (16) of this unit (use a connecting cable with 3.5mm dia. stereo input plug). 3. Press the “CD 2 “ REC“ button (29) and then the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button (19) to confirm recording until the play “ “ & “ “ indicators show on the CD Recorder operation display. 4. After a few seconds, the CD Recorder display will show the numbers of the Time Counter - the system has now started recording. 5. Now start playback of the external device connected to Aux-in, separating the tracks during recording if required. 6. When the recording has finished, press the “ CD 2 Stop ” button (18) and then stop playback of the connected external device (remove it after the recording process has finished). 7. “Finalize” the recorded disc if you wish it to play it in another CD Player as described elsewhere in this manual. E-9 Notes: - - The recording speed is 1:1 and the same as the actual playing time of the playing source. To suspend the recording process, press the “ CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19), “ bUSY “ will flash for a second on the LCD display - a new recording track number will be generated and the recording will be paused. To re-start the recording, press the CD 2 “Play/Pause ” button (19) again, the play indicator “ “ will show on the LCD display. When the capacity of the disc CD-R disc is full, the word “FULL” will appear on the display – press the “ CD 2 Stop ” button (18) and change to another empty/blank CD-R disc to continue recording. B. CD RECORDING SETTINGS (on the remote control only) i) Recording level The recording level can be adjusted with the REC LEVEL +/- button (53/54) on the remote control to avoid distortion if the record source level is too high. ii) Track Separation during CD Recording It is possible to separate the music tracks that are being recorded track-after-track, by using either the Auto (a) or the Manual (b) mode before or during recording: a) Auto mode Press the “ AUTO/MANUAL“ button (57) when getting ready to use the recording function, the LCD display will show -20db, -30db, -40db, and the “AUTO TRACK” icon will appear on the LCD display. When the recording sound level has dropped below the -20 / -30 / -40dB (recording signal) respectively, the track that is currently being recorded will end and at that moment a new track will be generated – afterwards the unit will automatically continue recording the next track. Note: It is recommended to set a lower recording level for a music source with clear performance (such as a CD or MP3 via Aux-in), and set a higher recording level for a higher noise music source - such as a vinyl record (Phono): “ – 20db or – 30db “ – for recording from Aux-in with a digital music source. “ – 30db or – 40db “ – for recording from Tape or Phono mode. “ ------- “ – auto mode off. The above is just a recommendation, the actual performance varies and is affected by the differences in music source. If the cut-off is always misjudged for certain music files, please use the Manual Mode (b) instead. b) Manual mode Press the “CD 2 track separation “ “ button (28) on the front panel (or 57 on the Remote Control) once - at any time during recording - in any mode - and the system will generate a new track and continue recording. The word “bUSY “ will briefly show on the LCD display, which indicates the unit is successfully creating a new track. iii) Finalizing a CD-R(W) disc You must convert the CD-R(W) disc into a standard Audio CD before you can play it back in any another Audio CD player, including CD 1. This process is known as “FINALIZING” - a table of contents (TOC) will be written on the CD at the same time. The procedure is as follows: 1. Select the CD 2 function mode (24), ensure the recorded CD-R(W) disc to be finalized is in the CD 2 tray. 2. Ensure the CD 1s not playing, and then press the FINALIZE button (26). “ Fin-d “ appears on the CD Recorder operation display. (If you wish to quit the finalizing mode for any reason, press the “CD 2 Stop ” button (18). 3. Press the “CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19) to start finalizing and the CD Recorder operation display will show “ bUSY“ during this process. 4. After finalizing has completed, the CD tray will open automatically and “OPEN“ will appear on the CD Recorder operation display. Notes: - The time it takes to finalize a disc depends on the contents of the recorded disc - this may take up to 15 minutes, but usually less. - No buttons will be working during the finalizing process. - Never turn the power off or unplug the power cord during the finalizing process. - Once recorded on and after finalizing a disc you cannot record again on a “CD-R” disc or erase any tracks. - Although a finalized “CD-R” disc may play on other CD Players, remember that a finalized “CD-RW” disc is not guaranteed to play on all other CD Players. - Due to differences in compatibility with the unit of CD-R or CD-RW discs, please change to another brand, or another disc in the pack, if you find the performance of the recording not satisfactory - this is not a malfunction. iv) Erasing or Un-finalizing a CD-RW Disc It is possible to erase the last recorded track or erase all tracks recorded on a “CD-RW” (re-writeable) disc. Notes: It is NOT possible to un-finalize or delete tracks from a “CD-R” disc. If you wish to erase the last track of a finalized “CD-RW”, you must UN-FINALIZE THE WHOLE disc first. E-10 A) Un-finalizing a CD-RW disc 1. Select the CD 2 function and place the “CD-RW” disc you would like to un-finalize in the CD 2 tray. 2. With the CD 2 player stopped  (18), press the “ERASE“ button (27) (or ERASE on the remote) – the display will show “UNFin-d”. 3. Then press the “CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19) to start erasing - “bUSY“ will appear on the CD Recorder display during erasing. 4. When the unit has finished un-finalizing the recorded disc, the display will show the total number of tracks and total playing time of the disc and the “NO TOC” indicator will appear on the display. B) Erasing one Track 1. Select CD 2 function and place the un-finalized CD-RW you wish to delete one track from in the CD 2 tray. 2. With CD 2 stopped  (18), press the “ERASE“ button once - “ Er “ and the last track number will appear on the CD Recorder operation display. 3. Press the “CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19) to erase the last track – while erasing, “bUSY“ will show on the CD Recorder display. 4. When finished erasing, the track erasing display will show the total track numbers and the total playing time of the disc and the “NO TOC” indicator will appear on the display. 5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to continue erasing more tracks. C) Erasing all Tracks 1. Select CD 2 function and place the un-finalized CD-RW you wish to erase all tracks from in the CD 2 tray. 2. With CD 2 stopped  (18), press the CD “ERASE“ button (27) twice - “Er ALL“ will appear on the CD Recorder operation display. 3. Press the “CD 2 Play/Pause ” button (19) to start erasing all the tracks on the CD-RW - “bUSY” will show on the display during erasing. 4. Once erasing has finished, the CD Recorder operation display will show “000 00:00“ to confirm the erasing process is complete. Notes: - Once the tracks are erased, this cannot be undone. - It is not possible to erase one track at a time on this unit from a copied CD-RW disc recorded on another system, but it may be possible to erase all tracks. BLUETOOTH CONNECTION AND PLAYBACK 1. Select the function button (24) to select “BT” mode. 2. The Bluetooth LED indicator (2) will be flashing while your device is searching and waiting to connect to Bluetooth. 3. Switch the Bluetooth function of your Bluetooth device on (such as a mobile phone) and select the Bluetooth equipment code “SMC2014” to connect. 4. When the Bluetooth device has connected successfully, the Bluetooth LED will no longer be flashing but will still be on. 5. Start playback of the music on your Bluetooth device and enjoy the music through the speakers of the main unit. 6. Adjust the volume as required. AUX-IN CONNECTION & PLAYBACK Connect another audio device, e.g. a (portable) CD or Cassette Player, or other tape player, MP3 player, iPod® or Radio to this system via a cord with 3.5mm dia. plugs (not supplied). Connect one end of this cord to e.g. the 3.5mm dia. Headphone Jack (or other output socket) on the external device and the other end to the Aux-in jack (16) on the front panel of this unit. When connected in this way it is possible to either play back or record the music stored on the connected device. 1. Press the Function button (24) to select AUX mode. 2. Plug the external device’s connection lead into the Aux-in jack (16) of this unit. 3. Start playing back the music on your external device and adjust the volume by turning the VOLUME knob (10) (volume level ranges from 0 – 30 on the display) or press the VOL -/+ buttons on the Remote Control (56). Notes: If you experience any sound distortion, reduce the volume level on your auxiliary device. Please unplug the external device when you have finished playing the music. LINE-OUT CONNECTION You can connect this system to another Hi-Fi system and play the music through the Amplifier and speakers of that unit, or connect it to a PC for computer encoding. Connect the two plugs of an RCA cable (not supplied) from the Line Out socket on the rear of the cabinet (40) to the Auxiliary Input socket of the other unit/PC. E-11 SUBWOOFER-OUT CONNECTION Connect a powered or active Subwoofer (not supplied*) to the Subwoofer Jack (44) on the rear of this unit to add extra BASS sound. The sound of the Subwoofer can only be adjusted by its own controls. *Contact your supplier, or Steepletone UK Ltd, for information on a suitable subwoofer system to use with this unit. HEADPHONE CONNECTION Connect your headphones (not included) to the 3.5mm dia. Headphone Jack listening, make sure the volume is adjusted to a safe and comfortable level. (15) for private listening. Before CAUTION: - Avoid extended play at a very high volume as it may impair your hearing. If you experience ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or shut off your unit. Keep the volume at a reasonable and safe level - even if your headset is an open-air type designed to allow you to hear outside sounds. Please note that excessively high volume may still block outside sounds. MORE FEATURES A. Sleep setting (by remote control) 1. 2. 3. 4. The sleep function enables the system to switch to standby mode automatically at a pre-set time. As an example, in TUNER mode: Press the “SLEEP/TIMER” button (58) and the sleep indicator “zzz” will show on the LCD display. Press the button repeatedly to adjust the Sleep Timer in the following sequence: 90 > 80 > 70 > 60 > 50 > 10 minutes. If for instance 60 has been selected, the system will stop and go into standby mode automatically after the selected time of 60 minutes has been reached. To cancel the Sleep Mode, press the “SLEEP/TIMER” button until the “zzz” indicator has disappeared from the LCD display. B. Alarm clock setting (by remote control) This function allows the system to switch on automatically and wake you up by Radio (Tuner), (see **Notes below) or CD (in CD 1), as selected. Firstly, put the unit in Standby Mode and then press and hold the “SLEEP/TIMER” button (58) to enter the alarm setting mode, the ‘hour’ digits “00” will be flashing on the LCD display. 1) To set the Wake up time:   Press the skip up TUNE/ or skip down /TUNE button (58) to set the ‘hour’ and then press “SLEEP/TIMER“ again to confirm the ‘hour’. Then the ‘MINUTES’ digits will be flashing: Press the skip up TUNE / or skip down /TUNE“ button to set the ‘minutes’ and press the “SLEEP/TIMER“ button to store the ‘TIMER ON’ time. On the display “TUNE” and will flash. 1) To set the Wake up source:   Press skip up TUNE / or Skip down /TUNE“ button (58) to select the ‘timer on’ mode. Then press the “SLEEP/TIMER“ button to confirm the setting. Notes: – – – – The wake up volume is preset at level 20. If there is no music source being detected (CD) when the pre-set wake-up time has been reached, the system will **default to Radio mode automatically. To wake up by Radio, the system will be pre-set at the latest radio frequency that was being listened to before switching the unit off. It is necessary to switch the system off manually during alarm wake up mode as it will not turn off automatically after the timer has been activated.  Activate/de-activate the Timer function (by remote control) 1. To activate the Timer function, press the “SLEEP/TIMER” button (58) on the remote handset until the timer indicator appears on the LCD display. 2. To cancel the Timer function, press the “SLEEP/TIMER” button again until the timer indicator disappears. C. Pre-set EQ function This unit allows 5 different sound modes to enhance your listening experience. pressing the PRE-SET EQ button (25) repeatedly in the following sequence: Flat pop jazz rock classic E-12 You can select the desired effect by BATTERY INSTALLATION The battery compartment is located on the back of the remote control. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing in on the tab and lifting it off. 2.
