Alternatives to Worksheets Teacher Directions Dogs Diggin’ for Bones There are two versions of the game, Dogs Diggin’ for Bones. One is for three addend addition combinations. The other version of Dogs Diggin’ for Bones" is a game to practice 3 factor multiplication. The addends and factors will be generated by the roll of three dice. Each player needs a game board and chips. Decide order of play. Players take turns tossing the dice and finding the sum or product of the three rolled numbers. The player then finds the corresponding sum or product and covers it with a marker. Set the timer for 10 minutes. The player with the most sums or products covered is the winner. If a sum or product has already been covered, player loses turn. Players can use the response boards to figure the products. Players can play the game on the same board and use the “bump it” rule. Play is over when all bones are covered. The total of all covered spaces can be calculated and the player with the highest score wins. Students will love the “bump it” rule! This rule motivates students to roll quickly. My students also made up the rule of “bump it protection.” This is in case a sum or product is rolled and already covered by that player. A player would add another transparent chip over their chip. Only one chip is “bumped off” at a time. A teacher can bring to students attention the commutative property by changing the order. The associative property can also be taught here by having students write the numbers rolled on the response boards and then write the parentheses showing the order in which the equation was solved.
