DORMA XS cylinder
The DORMA XS is an extra-small modular access control system offering flexibility “in excess” for a wide range of requirements. It provides for simple, fast and thus generally more cost-efficient customisation while greatly facilitating planning, installation, usage and expansion. DORMA XS products open up new possibilities for end customers, specifiers, installers, architects and the trade in the provision of optimised masterkey and access control solutions.
The DORMA XS cylinder is the new multi-talent for electronic masterkey and access control systems. Depending on requirements, the same component can be used as a double cylinder with unidirectional and bi-directional (also with differentiated authorisations) electronic access control, as an electronic single (half) cylinder, or as an electronic cabinet lock.

Flexibility through modularity The complete electronic system including the reader unit and batteries, plus the mechatronic coupling, are located in the XS cylinder reader module. The components required for engagement of the lock cam within the cylinder casing are purely mechanical. Further enhanced flexibility is achieved with the modular add-on cylinder adapter. Over 30 standard cylinder length combinations enable the unit to be used in doors with thicknesses from approx. 40 to 110 mm. Further lengths on application. Functional description The DORMA XS cylinder monitors and controls access events in response to the presentation of passive ID media, e.g. HITAG1, in the format of cheque cards or transponder fobs. Depending on the equipment configuration and parameter settings, various functions can be assigned to the XS cylinder directly at the door, allowing differentiated access control and hierarchies.

Fits in all locks prepared for a europrofile cylinder adapter. Thus suitable for old and new buildings alike. No cabling, wiring or other preparatory work necessary.
The XS cylinder has two functional operating positions: engaged and disengaged. In the standard disengaged condition, the reader module (“electronic knob”) rotates freely without operating the lock cam. Presentation of an authorised ID card engages the cam. Now, as the reader module is rotated, the cam is operated and actuates the latch and/or bolt in accordance with the type of lock concerned. The cylinder operating status is visually and audibly signalled at the reader module.
Installation: fast All you need is a screwdriver and a couple of minutes. Simply undo and remove the forend screw holding the cylinder in the lock. Take the old cylinder out of the lock and replace with the XS cylinder (minus the reader module or knob). Then reinsert and tighten the forend screw and click the reader module or knob into place. Finally, activate the reader module with an authorised access card.
Commissioning: simple Following legitimisation of the program card at the reader module, up to 99 ID cards or transponder fobs can be married to the cylinder. Commissioning of the DORMA XS cylinder MasterCard variant is performed without a PC or software.
Maintenance: rare The reader module contains two standard 3-volt CR-2 lithium batteries, providing sufficient capacity for up to 30,000 operations. The last approx. 1,000 operations are audibly signalled. Following legitimisation by the battery change card, the cap of the reader module can be removed for battery replacement. The service life of the batteries is max. 10 years. Should the batteries die or malfunction in some other way, the cylinder can be externally powered by another source connected to the two contacts provided on the fascia of the reader module cap.

Application: flexible
The modular design of the DORMA XS cylinder guarantees excellent efficiency and effectiveness, thanks in particular to an inherently low capital tie-up. The high-quality electronic cylinder head is supplied separately from the purely mechanical knob and cylinder body. The cylinder adapter is available in 32 standard lengths for door thicknesses from approx. 40 to 110 mm. This ensures optimum availability, with just 12 stock lengths sufficient to cover all the common door thicknesses. No longer is there the need to stock 32 complete cylinders as separate SKUs.
The application spectrum of the DORMA XS cylinder extends from single dwelling entrance doors, apartment block doors and condominium entrances, to doors in large office and factory complexes. Whatever the application, the system can always be flexibly adapted to current and changing requirements. For example, the mechanical knob can always be replaced by a second reader module in order to implement bi-directional access control, with different authorisations per direction if and as required.
A further advantage of the modular cylinder construction is the minimum installation requirement, something which can be a major cost factor in large projects. Detailed pre-planning as to which door should be provided with which cylinder is no longer necessary. Instead, the installation carry case merely has to be provided with the cylinder adapters needed for the project, with selection of the required variant being effected directly at the door. The system could not be more efficient or effective, eliminating completely the risk of pre-planning mistakes and the component replacement work that such errors can entail.
Compatibility: coordinated The XS cylinder is ideally suited as a complementary system to already installed DORMA access control systems such as CODIC CARD, CODIC MasterCard, TIMAC or IPEV. Without the need for any major planning or installation input, further doors in current or new building sections can be integrated within the access control system and conveniently managed via the existing CODIC CARD SOFT software (CC-Soft).

Expansion: on demand With its four configurations – MasterCard in combination with the programming card, Standalone in combination with a PDA, Offline in combination with a PDA plus CC-Soft, and Online in combination with a wireless network plus CC-Soft – the DORMA XS cylinder can be perfectly coordinated to the current access control requirements of the customer. If these requirements should change, the XS cylinder can be adapted without difficulty. Almost all the XS cylinder components used for one configuration can be incorporated in another configuration, thus eliminating any loss of investment outlay. If required, the authorisations can be provided with a permanent-open function so the door merely needs to be unlocked in the morning and locked in the evening. As the MasterCard variant is designed as a direct teach-in/ erase system, the authorised cards or transponders are validated or cancelled directly at the door by simply presenting the programming card at the cylinder and then the ID. Lost ID cards or transponder fobs no longer give rise to any security headaches because issued authorisations can be annulled in a matter of seconds.

Management of the access rights is carried out with a PDA, e.g. Palm, in conjunction with the installed Access Manager software. Convenient management and control via PDA and CC-Soft software combined with XS Upgrade components. There are various optional strategies available for access control implementation. For example: grouping together specific doors and employees; access time schedules; access calendar with special days; door program controls; suppression or recording of terminal entries; differentiated validation of access authorisations and office accessibilities. DORMA XS MasterCard Product description The DORMA XS cylinder is a universally applicable, batteryoperated lock actuator based on the following design principles: A europrofile cylinder adapter is provided with an electronic reader module at one end and a mechanical rotary knob at the other. The reader electronics and the mechatronic coupling system are installed together with the batteries inside the reader module. Combination of the XS cylinder reader module with a europrofile cylinder adapter enables conventional locks prepared for DIN europrofile cylinders to be upgraded to an access control system without the need for any additional installation work. The XS cylinder can thus be used as a cost-efficient solution for both new projects and for existing buildings. The user IDs can take the form of various transponder media such as ISO cards, fobs, watches, etc. Properties ■ Suitable for installation in europrofile cylinder (PZ) locks per DIN 18254. ■ Europrofile cylinders of modular construction from 25/25 mm to 50/60 mm; other sizes on application. ■ No wiring or cabling work required. ■ No installation drilling work required. ■ Identification via passive transponder ID media. ■ Identification requires no power supply. ■ Automatic activation of the reader electronics by presentation of ID media such as cards, key fobs, watches, etc. ■ No electrical contact within the XS cylinder. ■ Reader module powered by two standard 3-volt CR-2 lithium batteries rated for at least 30,000 operations. The last approx. 1,000 possible operations of a battery set are audibly signalled. The batteries can be replaced without cylinder removal. In the event of flat or defective batteries, the reader module can be powered from an external source. ■ Battery change (opening of the cover) only possible with the battery change ID (legitimisation card). ■ Easy fitting/removal by latched engagement/disengagement of the reader module in the cylinder adapter, only possible with installation ID (legitimisation card). ■ Sealed, water-protected reader module with intrinsic safety ratings up to IP 67 in the installed condition. Electronic knob end only: ■ Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. ■ Temperature range: –25°C to + 65°C. ■ Knob module protection: IP 64. ■ Cylinder and knob casing and cap of nickel-plated brass; rigid plastic cover in the antenna section. ■ Storage capacity for up to 99 authorisations. ■ Permanent-open (toggle function) possible without additional power consumption.
