Workgroup
Swiftly moving past the conventional niche imaging arenas, document scanning technologies are evolving to reach more diverse business markets. Distributed scanning and greater adoption of scanning for compliance issues within Corporate America continue to grow the document scanning market. The high-growth workgroup category has been driving scanner shipments and is projected to be the highest revenue producing segment by the end of 2005. Such an optimistic outlook has resulted in highly competitive market conditions in the workgroup category. As scanning continues to proliferate throughout the general office, ease-of-use is paramount in the workgroup market segment. High demand features in this market include: • Automated scanning and image clean-up for minimum user intervention • Bundled software applications, such as the full version of Adobe Acrobat • Simple connectivity, primarily high speed USB interfaces • Easy operation with one-touch buttons to initiate scanning Segment Percentage of Total Document Scanner Shipments 2002-2008; North America*

DR-Series Scanner Line-up The DR-2580C is an ultra compact workgroup scanner positioned between the DR-2050C and DR-3080CII. Canon entered the fast growing workgroup market segment in 2002 with the awardwinning DR-2080C. Due to strong brand recognition and focused sales channels, Canon has performed well in the workgroup category since the introduction of the DR-2080C. The addition of the DR-2580C to Canon’s DR-Series Scanner portfolio is expected to significantly expand market share in horizontal business environments and establish the company as a formidable player in the workgroup category. Equipped with a newly adopted feeding mechanism and optional Full or Half Size Flatbed Units, the color duplex DR-2580C combines versatility with an efficient space-saving design. It employs Dual Path feeding - Straight Path and U-turn Path - in order to meet the need for scanning a variety of documents, including thick cardboards or plastic cards. In addition, there are many new features to improve user efficiency, such as one-touch Scan-To-Job buttons, Ultrasonic Double Feed Detection, Punch Hole Removal function and Rapid Recovery System. In response to market conditions, the DR-2580C ships with CapturePerfect 3.0 and Adobe Acrobat 8.0 bundled application software. Card Scanning Size Thickness
In order to feed thicker documents such as driver’s licenses or insurance cards and still maintain a small footprint, the scanner unit of the DR-2580C has an innovative Floating Mechanism that moves upward with a thick document. This mechanism was designed so that the height of the scanning unit and feed rollers automatically adjusts depending on the thickness of the documents being scanned. 1) Document comes into the scanner unit 2) Based on the thickness of the document, the front roller moves upward together with the scanner unit 3) When the document reaches the backside roller, the backside roller moves upward 4) 4. When the document goes out the front roller, the front roller moves downward Note: Continuous card scanning is not covered under limited warranty per specifications.
User-friendly Operation Customizable Scan-To-Job buttons offer quick, one-touch access to frequently used scan functions. Three buttons conveniently located on the top of the scanner body can be programmed in advance for popular operations and for use by non-dedicated users.

DR- 2580C Product Overview
Key Capabilities: Hardware Low-Maintenance, Built-in Automatic Shading Adjustment The shading adjustment board is built into the DR-2580C, and prior to every batch-scanning job, the shading adjustment is automatically processed. This ensures consistent and high quality scanned images each and every time. The shading boards are located both on the upper/lower Sensor Units. The sensor units move from front/back to make shading.
Reliable Paper Feeding Mechanism The DR-2580C inherits Canon’s renowned Retard Roller paper separation mechanism, offering reliable paper feeding and low maintenance. When the number of pages scanned exceeds 100,000, a roller replacement message will appear on the host PC. User-replaceable roller kits are available to maintain optimum paper feeding.
Double-Feed Detection Among the first in the workgroup segment, Canon has newly added Ultrasonic Double Feed Detection capability to the DR-2580C. With this new feature a pair of Ultrasonic Sensor units exchange ultrasonic waves to detect a gap or a layer of air between double-fed papers. When detected, it signals a double feed occurrence, thus causing the scanner to stop. The detection system is triggered when documents overlaps by more than 2 inches. Ultrasonic emitter

Version 2.1 June 2006
Key Capabilities: Driver Enabled Rapid Recovery System For improved scanning efficiency, the DR-2580C features a new Rapid Recovery System. With this feature enabled, only completely processed image data is sent to the application software. In the event document feeding is interrupted, from paper jams or other unexpected feeding failures, the scanning operation is paused, yielding the “No Paper” message. Once the user treats the error, the scan job continues seamlessly from where it left off. Because incomplete image data is not transferred to the application software, there is no need to delete partial data or rescan an entire batch of documents.
3-Dimensional Color Correction The DR-2580C is uniquely equipped with a new built-in conversion circuit, which not only allows the scanner to correct each RGB color element independently, but also offers automatic adjust the gamma settings based on a compensated combination of the RGB data. The adjusted colors in the resulting output images become much closer to the ones in the original documents.

Version 2.1 June 2006
Punch Hole Removal Function The punch (or binder) holes that traditionally appear as black dots on scanned images can now be removed with the DR-2580C. With its cutting-edge Punch Hole Removal function enabled, the DR-2580C first reads both sides of the documents, verifies that the black dots found are mirrored on the front and the back images, and removes or ‘whites-out’ the black dots on the output document images.
Notes: * If documents are fed considerably skewed, the function might not work properly. * The removed punch holes might become visible as white holes if on gray or colored background. * When the Scan Area settings are used, the Punch Hole Removal function cannot be used.
Folio Mode The scanner uses a folio scanning method scan documents that are bigger than LTR size paper (maximum 11" x 17" size paper). To do folio scanning, fold the document in half and set it on the scanner, both sides of the folded document are scanned and are combined as a single image.

Contrast Adjustment Technology in Black-and-White Scanning For improved image quality in documents of low contrast, either light text on light background or dark text on dark background, the DR-2580C provides Black-and-White Contrast Adjustment technology. Typically, when documents in very low contrast are scanned into Black and White images, the scanned images may be hardly visible, resulting in poor quality of the output images. Contrast settings have been perceived as generally available in grayscale scanning, but not in black-and-white scanning; presumably because dots on a binarized image would have to be represented either as in black or in white, not anywhere in between. With the DR-2580C, data is first digitized into 256 levels of gray, giving each dot one of 256 possible shades between black and white. The value of 0 represents pure black, 255 represents pure white, and everything in between is a varying shade of gray. Based on the contrast level (1 through 7) selected by the user, the scanner adjusts the relationship between input data and output data. The Black-and-White Contrast Adjustment feature of the DR-2580C allows for intensifying or amplifying the contrast difference between the text and the background on low-contrast documents. The text on the final output can become more distinctive from the background, producing greatly enhanced images from the original documents. This figure illustrates how Black-and-White Contrast Adjustment function would affect the output image quality scanned from documents in lower contrasts by lowering or increasing the Contrast level within the pre-set range between 1 to 7.

Multi-page vs. Single-page File Format Multiple images can be saved into a single TIFF or PDF file (as ‘Multi-page’ file), or the pages can be separated as necessary into multiple single-image files (as ‘Single-page’ file). When the ‘Multi-page’ file scanning option is selected with a user-specified ‘number of pages’ per document or form, a sequential identification number is automatically generated for each file and appended to the shared portion of the file name that was initially given by the user to the batch before scanning. When the ‘Single-page’ files are created, the system-generated numbers are always appended to the file name, or additional information such as scan settings can also be selectively included in the file names at the ‘Schema Settings’ dialog box.
Barcode/OCR Log Files The results of recognition performed with the barcode detection (using optional software barcode module*) or OCR function can also be saved in a log file in the CSV format. As illustrated below, the Write LogFile check box in the appropriate tab of the Barcode/OCR LogSetting dialog box enables a log file to be named and saved in a designated directory location.
* The barcode tab is activated upon the installation of the optional software barcode module that is compatible with certain DR-Scanner models only. Please contact authorized Canon dealers for more information.

Scan Functions CapturePerfect provides users with a number of convenient ways to scan documents for a variety of business imaging needs. Scan Function
Description
Scan Page Documents are scanned only one page, i.e., one side of a document at a time. The scanned images can then be saved to a file, sent to a printer or discarded as necessary. Duplex scanning is not available with this option. Scan Batch to File In many cases, documents are scanned in batches, and the scanned images are saved either into Multipage file(s) per batch or separately into multiple Single-page files. Scan Batch to Printer As documents are scanned, the scanned data is sent directly to a printer for printing from the document images. The scanned images are not saved after scanning using this option. (Documents can also be printed in CapturePerfect from previously saved image files.) Scan Batch to Mail Users can also choose to send scanned images as file attachments to email messages. A MAPI (Microsoft Messaging Application Programming Interface) – compliant email client application program, for example, Microsoft® Outlook®, many popular Internet email applications, or Lotus Notes®, is required on the computer. As with the ‘Scan Batch to Printer’ option, the scanned images are not saved on the PC after scanning. Scan to Presentation The projector connected to the PC displays scanned images in this mode when page after page is loaded on the Paper Feed Tray and scanned during business presentations. Scanned images can optionally be saved when the presentation is closed. Scan Job
‘Scan Jobs’ can be pre-registered for routine scan operations or other frequently repeated scan sessions using the same scanning conditions. ‘Scan to Mail,’ ‘Scan to Print,’ and ‘Scan to PC’ operations are available as different types of the Scan Job, and a total of up to 99 Jobs can be registered.

Image Display Functions CapturePerfect offers multiple display options to view scanned images.
Thumbnail View of Images When the ‘Thumbnail’ display option is selected, the thumbnail (reduced) views of opened or scanned images are displayed in the ‘“Thumbnail’” window on the left pane of the screen, and the selected thumbnail is displayed in the main ‘Image View’ window on the right side of the screen. The images in the ‘Thumbnail’ window can be ‘dragged and dropped’ at the users’ convenience to be displayed in desired order. This display option helps users to easily navigate through piles of document images, for example, to locate a specific page of interest.
Split View of Images Users may choose to split the image display window into two or four windows to view more than a single image at a time. Scanning operations can be performed while this ‘Split View’ feature is enabled; other image display functions, such as image magnification, reduction or rotation, are independently applied to each image displayed in each window. The ‘Thumbnail Display’ option can also be combined with this ‘Split View’ feature.
Full-Screen View of Images Images can be viewed at full screen for business presentations or on any other image display/exhibit occasion. While in this viewing mode, image display tools (Brightness, Zoom, Rotate, Page Navigation, Thumbnail, etc.) become available when the users right-click anywhere on the currently displayed full screen image.

Searchable PDF File Format Support When documents are scanned into PDF file format in CapturePerfect, the printed character strings within the documents, can be recognized and saved as text data attached to the PDF output files. The output PDF files with the embedded OCR text then become “searchable” by a string of text as the search ‘keyword,’ similar to using the Windows ® built-in Search tool. The text contained in these ‘Searchable PDF’ files can also be extracted and copied over into other text application files such as Microsoft® Word® files.
PDF File Security When scanning with CapturePerfect, security-sensitive documents can be scanned into PDF file format and password-protected from unauthorized user access for opening, editing or printing. The PDF files can be encrypted either at 40-bit (‘RC3’ standard) or 128-bit (‘RC4’ standard) encryption levels, depending on the security requirements and nature of image files. This security functionality is increasingly important to businesses with industry specific government compliance initiatives.
