Car lovers appreciate high performance variants of a standard model so Onkyo has taken that lesson on board with its latest AV receivers. If your budget is tight and you want a stunning, value-for-money 7.1receiver, with genuine HDMI switching and a fabulously easy auto set-up system, then the new Onkyo TX-SR604E is the model for you. It’s a fantastic option. If you fancy stepping up to the next level of sonic performance though – and don’t mind paying a little extra to get it – then may we respectfully suggest you check out the new TX-SR674E… Onkyo’s first European-tuned home cinema receiver. Tuned by Onkyo’s top R&D engineers after two years of exhaustive listening tests conducted in Europe, the 7.1-channel TX-SR674E offers a a standard of musical insight and sheer audio quality that truly sets it apart. 1 of 1 How has Onkyo done it? By exhaustively listening to components and making a host of careful substitutions, by looking to improve chassis rigidity and by substituting different materials for those used in the basic TX-SR604E design. Beneath the TX-SR674E’s solid aluminium front-panel, for instance, you’ll find a plastic moulding that’s made of a completely different – and more expensive - grade of plastic from the one used in the TX-SR604E. Why? Because different grades of plastic used in this location sound audibly different… and this one sounds unquestionably better. It all sounds a little unhinged to the uninitiated but experienced audio engineers know all about the differences that subtle changes such as this can make. Around 30 key changes were made in the TX-SR674E, the cumulative effect of which is a receiver that delivers a substantial improvement in audio quality over the standard model. Altogether smoother, more musically coherent and more holographic sounding… When it comes to functionality too, the TX-SR674E offers a level of comprehensiveness that’s wholly unexpected at its price point. Fully prepared for the world of high definition TV it sports a pair of HDMI inputs (compatible with 720p/1080i/1080p signals) plus one output. Naturally, older video sources/displays are also catered for with three component video inputs (leading to a single component video output) plus S-video and composite video inputs. What’s really useful is that all the older video signals can be upconverted to be delivered via the HDMI output… so you can use one display/projector with all your video sources routed via the receiver. The process of setting up your receiver in your room has also been significantly eased too. Onkyo is proud to announce that the TXSR674E/TX-SR604E are the world’s first home cinema receivers to sport Audyssey’s amazing new 2EQ Automatic Room EQ set-up and correction system. This microphone-based system – derived from the research carried out for the original high-end Audyssey MultEQ system - detects speaker polarity, the distance to those speakers and then sets levels, delays and crossovers. What makes it different is that it measures the room’s acoustics at two listening positions, rather than at the one position that most simple systems use. Granted, there are some competing systems out there that take measurements at more than one listening position but they then simply average out the results, leading to minimal nasties (ie no sonic peaks and troughs) but an uninspiring sound. 2 of 2 Audyssey 2EQ, on the other hand, makes corrections in both frequency response and the time domain (where is where most problems lie). If that sounds complex just use the system and witness the clear, precise and natural sounding result… that should be explanation enough! Aside from being one of the today’s easiest receivers to set-up the TXSR674E also happens to be one of the best equipped when it comes to the business of surround sound decoding. Onboard you’ll find decoding for every desirable codec - Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24 and DTS Neo:6 - to effectively reproduce stereo and multi-channel sources in all-enveloping 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound. Thanks to its 7.1-channel multi-channel audio inputs users will also be able to hook up their upcoming HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc players, in order to savour the joys of the accompanying new audio formats like Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD. At 7 x 150w, power output is 10w higher than for the TX-SR604E and it’s mated with first class amplification technologies to convert the signals into sparkling audio output intended for your speakers. Chief among those is WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology), designed to deliver a fuller sound at higher frequencies, reduce individual circuit noise and handle speaker reflex energy and impedance fluctuations for improved dynamics. Stereo fans will also be pleased to discover that the TX-SR674E also includes VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) in the front L/R channels, to lessen signal noise during the digital-to-analogue conversion process. With VLSC, data is converted between sampling points and then joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The end result is a noiseless, smooth analog output signal based on the digital source. Did we mention that you can purchase an optional Onkyo iPod dock to allow your favourite tunes to heard through your TX-SR674E? It’s true… With a host of modifications under its ‘bonnet’ the European-tuned TXSR674E is a tempting, alternative step-up model, one that’s primarily focused on offering improved audio performance rather than bagfuls of extra facilities of dubious worth. We think discerning owners will appreciate the approach… 3 of 3 Features Amplifier Features • 150 watts per channel minimum into 6 ohms, 1 kHz, IEC (1 channel driven) • Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) • Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) for all channels • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry • H.C.P.S.—high current power supply • Discrete power amplifier circuitry for all channels • High-current, low-impedance drive • Aluminum heatsink • Auto-protection circuitry Audio/Video Processing and Connectivity Features • DTS,DTS 96/24,DTS-ES Discrete/Matrix, DTS Neo:6 decoding • Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoding • 192 kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels • Advanced 32-bit processing DSP chip • HDMI Upconversion • 2 HDMI inputs and 1 output • Component video upconversion with Time Base Corrector (TBC) • Composite to S-Video upconversion • HDTV-capable (50 MHz) component video switching • 3 component-video inputs and 1 output • 6 digital inputs (4 optical [1 front panel]/2 coaxial) and 1 optical output • 5 S-Video inputs and 3 outputs • 5 composite video inputs and 3 outputs • 5 A/V inputs and 2 outputs • 2 audio inputs and 1 output • Front panel audio, video, S-Video, optical inputs • Pure audio mode • Color-coded 7.1-multichannel inputs (Ready for new DTS and Dolby Digital formats for high-definition discs) • Powered Zone 2/Zone 2 lineout with 12 V trigger • IR input • A-form listening mode memory • CinemaFILTER • Double Bass function • Digital upsampling • Non-scaling configuration • Tone control (bass/treble) for front L/R channels • Zone 2 volume control • Late night mode (high/low/off) • Speaker level adjustment • Direct mode • Subwoofer pre out • Color-coded dual banana plug-compatible speaker posts (including Zone 2) FM/AM Tuner and Other Performance Features • 40 FM/AM random presets • RDS (PS/RT/PTY/TP) • Auto/manual tuning modes • Intellivolume • Audyssey 2EQ to correct room acoustic problems • Display dimmer (3 modes) • On-screen display • Headphone jack (standard) • Audio mute (via remote) • Sleep timer (via remote) • Battery-free memory backup • Heavy-duty power cord • Large, non-resonant feet • Heavy-gauge, anti-resonant, reinforced steel chassis 4 of 4 • Vibration-resistant cover • Aluminum front panel • Independent crossover adjustment for F/C/S/SB (40/50/60/80/100/120/150/200 Hz) • Compatible with RI (Remote Interactive) Dock for the iPod • A/V synchronization function (up to 100 ms in 10-ms steps) • Preprogrammed RI (Remote Interactive) remote control with mode-key LEDs For more product information and hi-res pictures follow this direct link to our product pages.
