Dremel 3D Printer Digital Fabrication Lab | College of Design, Iowa State University 3D Printing - The following steps will guide the user on how to transfer digital work from a design software to setting up the files and finally Material Equipment Dremel PLA Filament Dremel Printer - Only Dremel PLA Filament 1.75mm Diameter, 0.5 kg -Store in cool, dry, unexposed environment. -Always keep filament inside the shrink-wrap plastic until you are ready to use it. - Ceramic Printer - 3D builder that instead of putting ink into flat suface it builds up material in 3 dimensions to create an object. -This process happens when heats plastic filament and then draws it out in very fine layers. Software Design Setup Dremel Setup - Rhino3D - Can be used to setup the initial design files to be Printed -Export as a STL file -3D Ideal Build - Allows for model modifications to fit on build plateform -Exports model into right format for Dremel Printer Design Setup - Rhino -Make 3D Model suitable for 3D print -Convert Polysurfaces into Mesh -Select model -Hit mesh tab -Select Create Mesh from NURBs Object. -Check Mesh Quality -If a bad mesh try... -Unify mesh Normals. -Export File as .stl file. -Video: See Nick SENKE’s Video For Further Details. File Setup - Dremel Ideal Works - Load stl file into Dremel 3D Idea Builder -Arrange models on Build Platform -Scale and Rotate if necessary -Automatically repair any inconsistancies on model file -Create Automatic or Manual Supports for parts with overhangs -Create or View paths your extruder wil lfollow when building your model -If model is RED it needs to be adjusted before print. -IF model is BLUE, model is good for print. -Save STL file onto SD card from Dremel 3D printer or use USB cord. -You can use the scroll tool on right after build file is prepped to check the model layer by layer. Filament Installation Before you start... -Make sure dremel is unplugged and off -Remove lid and build platform Placing Filament -Put spool with label facing outward on spool holder. -Insert Spool lock into Spool, turn 90 degrees -Take strip of filement and intert into filment guide tube -Filament should end in extruder. -Clip build platform back into place -Put backonthe lid -Plug-in and turn on dremel LoadingFilament -Once Dremel is on on touch screen press the following -Tools -Filament -Load -Wait for filament to load and heat up -When prompt hit next and finish. Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Troubleshoot Clogged Extruder Step 1: Unload filament from the extruder. Turn off power, unplug power cord. Step 2: Remove the top cover & Open front door Step 1&2: Step 3: Move, by hand, the extruder to the center of the Idea Builder. Step 6: CAUTION: Use care when moving the extruder. Excessive force or pressure may damage the guide rails and belt. Do not force the extruder to move. If strong resistance is met when moving the extruder please call the Dremel Service Center. Step 4: Using the allen wrench, loosen the two screws on the front fan. Step 5: Remove the fan exposing the drive gear. Step 3: Step 6: Remove the clogged filament with a needle nose pliers. Note: Make sure to remove all remnants of the clogged filament and discard appropriately. Any remaining filament may cause the printer to not work properly. Step 7: Step 7: Replace the stepper motor and fan. Step 8: Tighten the 2 fan screws in place. Note: Screws should be hand tightened. Do not over tighten or you may damage the extruder fan. Step 4: CAUTION: Do not lean on or apply excessive force to the extruder head assembly. Doing this may bend or damage the guide rails. 2 Test and Verify: Step 1: Make sure to plug in the Idea Builder. Step 2: Turn the Idea Builder back on. Step 3: Load filament following the instructions on page 25 of the User manual. Step 5: Step 8: Build Platform Prep On touch screen press the following: -Tools -Level -Wait for printer to align -Place leveling sheet between xtruder and build platform -Turn knob left to make sheet slide easier -Tap next to move plateform toward the right knob & adjust resistance -Tap next to move plateform toward the rear knob & adjust resistance -Once adjusted press “Finish” -Check appropriate resitance one more time -Tap “Finish”again to complete level process Before Printing 3D Model: -Cover Build Plateform with Painters Tape. -Avoid using hands for smoothing tape because oils wil contribute to model not sticking to the bed. -Make sure to push the platform down all the way until it snaps shut. 3D Printing -Load File onto SD Card provided with machine. (Please keep SD File with Dremel at all times when not in use) -Insert SD card into appropriate location. -On Touch screen... -Tap “Build” -Tap SD Card option -Scroll with up/down arrows -Tap on Model File you would like to build -Tap Build -Allow for printer to heat up to build temperature -Once temperature is reached model will begin to build -Touch screen will display “Object finished”. Tap check to confirm -Wait until touch screen indicated that extruder temperature is cool -Wait for object to cool before removing, then remoce buid plate. -Remove model by picking it up while perssing down on build plate. -Sometimes scraping off model with a flat surface is needed
