Vendors Try to 'Rightsize' PLM for Smaller Businesses - 5 forces driving PLM market, making technology more SMB-friendly, addressing PLM's overhead issue, Beth Stackpole, Desktop Engineering, May 1, 2013. Increasing product complexity. The need to coordinate development processes across a globally-dispersed design team. Placing a greater emphasis on innovation and time-to-market agility. These challenges, once stumbling blocks for only the largest manufacturers, are now bearing down on small- to mid-size businesses (SMBs) as they seek to optimize product development organizations and engineering processes in an effort to gain a competitive edge. “Companies of all sizes have a pretty common theme in terms of increasing product complexity, process complexity and globalization,” says Marc Lind, senior vice president of marketing for Aras. With mechanical components only part of the overall product structure, today’s greater reliance on electronics and software has both large and small shops struggling to coordinate design across multiple disciplines. Moreover, firm size no longer dictates supply chain and partner complexity. Whether a company has 20 people or 20,000 people, Lind says, there’s a strong likelihood that some are spread across the globe. 33. At each stage Workflow takes decisions or makes suggestions as to how the goal is best achieved. However, the user can easily over-ride the decisions if required making the whole process flexible. 48. APPLE REJECTS MILLIONS OF FOXCONN IPHONES OVER QUALITY; FOXCONN SEEKS TO SHIFT MANUFACTURING Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Apple returned as many as eight million defective iPhones to Foxconn in March—at a cost to the Taiwan-based supplier of about $32 per device. Now, according to Taiwan's Digitimes, Foxconn wants to shift its iPhone manufacturing to a different subsidiary—from Foxconn Electronics to Foxconn International Holdings (FIH). If Apple approves such a shift, will implementing it delay the release of the next-generation iPhone 5S? That question is raised and discussed by Louis Bedigan at financial Web site Benzinga.com LEAN & SIX SIGMA TECHNIQUES, CMMI, BPM, BEST PRACTICES 49. THE “LEAN START-UP” EXPLAINED We usually think of lean culture as something that is brought into an existing workplace, where hopefully it will take root and transform it. Recently, however, there is growing interest in when lean isn't an add-on but rather a precedent to a business. This is the realm of the lean entrepreneur and the lean start-up--a realm where lean is in place to inform even the conception of a new business. In the May issue of the Harvard Business Review, Steve Blank shares a mindset and methodology that explains “Why the Lean Start-Up Changes Everything.” 50. WHEN WORKERS SEE LEAN AS IMPEDIMENT TO PRODUCTIVITY According to Jim Martin at the Erie Times-News, the workers and management at GE Transportation in Erie County, PA have very different ideas about what lean is. In his April 28 DSD Newsletter No. 280, 20.05.2013 Page 8 of 9 feature (“GE and workers see different paths to improving productivity”), Martin describes his discussions with unionized workers who believe “the productivity the company wants to improve was a casualty of lean manufacturing and a reduction in an incentive-pay program that paid employees more as they produced more.” Some of these workers “blame so-called lean manufacturing techniques that make it difficult to produce different locomotives side-by-side on the same assembly line.” At stake, Martin writes, are 950 jobs that GE is threatening to move from the PA facility to a newer one in Fort Worth, TX—which, the company claims, is 20% more productive. 51. LEAN, GREEN AND “RESPECT FOR PEOPLE ” A recent article on ThomasNet.com asks, “Is Lean Manufacturing Green Manufacturing?” The answer is apparently “yes,” but the feature inadvertently raises new questions about how workers are—and should be--valued. 52. ASQ REPORT: GAPS REMAIN IN MANAGEMENT OF QUALITY, USE OF METRICS WORLDWIDE The ASQ report, "Global State of Quality Research: Discoveries 2013," shows disparities between manufacturing and services in quality management frameworks and training.
