The MediaStream software relies on a unique address for each channel. Dual cards represent two channels and require two addresses. The MediaStream software will recognize one board as two separate input/output boards. See Table 1-1 for a list of valid combinations of board halves. To determine the right address: 1. Start a Telnet session for the server in which you plan to install the card. 2. Enter vmescan -d to view a list of all the installed boards and their addresses. Select two unused addresses for the new card. [root@08 /bvs/tmp] vmescan -d Indx Type <-- Address Range --> 32 Decoder 0x80000000 0x83FFFFFFF 0x00000000 4:2:2 EA decoder FOUND at -d 0 33 Decoder 0x84000000 0x87FFFFFFF 0x00000000 4:2:2 EA decoder FOUND at -d 1 34 Decoder 0x88000000 0x8BFFFFFFF 0x00000000 No board found. 35 Decoder 0x8C000000 0x8FFFFFFFF 0x00000000 No board found. 36 Decoder 0x90000000 0x93FFFFFFF 0x00000000 No board found. 45 Decoder 0xB4000000 0XB7FFFFFFF 0xffffffff No board found. 46 Decoder 0xB8000000 0xBBFFFFFFF 0xffffffff No board found. In the example above, positions 0 and 1 (Decoder 1 and Decoder 2) are assigned. All subsequent addresses up to and including Decoder 16 are available. Pinnacle I/O Board Installation Guide 13 Chapter 1: Pinncle I/O Board Configuration Setting the Address There are two sets of dip switches (one for each channel) on each card. Both the primary and secondary address switches must be set. The dip switches are located towards the back of the board (see Figure 1-8). Secondary Switch Primary Switch Figure 1-8: Dip Switch Positions Figure 1-9 shows dip switch settings for the board. Each dip switch has eight micro switches that need to be set for board configuration. The bits are numbered from 8 to 1, with 1 being the LSB (Least Significant Bit). To set the board correctly, view it with bit 8 on the left and bit 1 on the right as shown. • Set bits 7-5 to the correct Device ID. • Bits 4-1 are set in binary. • Set Channel 1 to address 0000 and number each channel sequentially from this address up to a maximum of 1111. • The hardware address for the primary and secondary switches must be unique. Note: Table 1-1 lists the valid combinations of board halves. 14 Pinnacle I/O Board Installation Guide Chapter 1: Pinnacle I/O Board Configuration Device ID 1 2 O 3 4 5 6 7 8 N 1 0 LSB Hardware Address Device ID 0110 = SD Decoder 0100 = HD Decoder 0001 = HD & MPEG IN 0010 = MPEG OUT 1001 = SD Encoder Note: White is switch position in this case white is down or 0 Figure 1-9: Dip Switch Settings Jumper Settings You need to set the jumper settings as appropriate for your board’s configuration (see Table 1-4). After installation, you need to configure a file on the server (the bvsrc file) and configure the MSi application to include the new channels. To install a board in a server: 1. Shut down the server in which you plan to install a board. (For a Networked Storage System, only the server node has to be shut down.) 2. Open a Console Port session and enter the command stopams -H. 3. When the Telnet window displays this message, turn off the power switches on the back of the server: Halting (in tight loop) –OK to Hit Reset Button 4. Move or disconnect any cables that might be in the way. 5. Select an unused slot in the server and remove the slot’s screws and cover plate. 6. Carefully slide the new board into the slot. 7. Press the card firmly to seat it into the connectors in the rear of the frame. The front panel should be flush with the other cards in the server. 8. Tighten the attached retaining screws. 9. Attach your video output cables. 10. Attach your audio output cables. 11. Attach your Genlock cables, if required. Notes: A 75-Ω terminator must be attached to the HD SDI outputs when the output is not connected to other equipment. If the Genlock signal terminates at a Dual Decoder board, you do not need to attach a terminator as the card is internally terminated. However, if there are more cards connected to the Genlock Loop, install a terminator on the last one. The HD Input board does not require Genlock. 12. Use two RJ-45 to RS-422 adapters and the RS-422 control cable to provide connections from the station’s automation to the RJ-45 connectors on the board. (See “RJ-45 to DB9 Cable” on page 29.) Use one connector on Port A for connection to a single port. For dual ports, use both Port A and Port B connectors. Figure 2-1: LAN to RS-422 Adapter Chapter 2: Board Installation and Software Configuration 13. Reconnect any cables you removed during board installation. 14. Turn the power switches on. 15. Monitor system startup from the System Administration window or a Console Port Telnet session. When the following message appears: “Start AMS? normal start or start in x:xx ; press ESC to bypass:.” Press the Esc button before the AMS application starts. You need to configure a file on the server next. Software Configuration For the new boards to boot up correctly and be available for use, configure the server and MSi software as described in this section. Run vmescan Before configuring the board, verify that the new board is available to the system and that the dip switches are set correctly. To do this, run the command vmescan -d. This command reports all available boards on the VME bus. Figure 2-2 shows an example of the output from the vmescan command. Note that output addresses start at 0. In this example, the system found six Dual Decoder boards configured at hardware ID’s 0-11. Figure 2-2: Sample vmescan Output When you run this command, confirm that the board you installed has the correct address. If the board does not appear in the list, run vmescan without the -d command flag. The board may show up mis-addressed as an “unknown” board. 20 Pinnacle I/O Board Installation Guide Chapter 2: Board Installation and Software Configuration If the board shows up in the list as unknown or with the wrong ID, power down the server, remove the board, and reset the dip switches to the correct ID. If the board does not show up in the list, shut down the server and reseat it. Then restart and run vmescan again to see if the board has the correct ID. If the board still does not appear in the list, call Pinnacle Customer Support. Run edit_bvsrc When the boards have been correctly identified with vmescan, go to the /bvs directory and run the command edit_bvsrc. This command begins an interactive script that configures the bvsrc file so that the boards can be initialized and made available to the system. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete this procedure. When the script has finished, open the bvsrc file in the vi editor to verify the output. To do this, go to the /bvs directory and enter vi bvsrc on the command line. If the files are incorrect, manually edit them in vi. Consult Pinnacle Customer Support if you have questions regarding the content of the bvsrc file. Example Lines in the bvsrc File Examples of the output you should see in the bvsrc file for Dual SD Decoders, Dual HD Decoders, and HD input cards follow. The data fields that change are under the headings of Decoder/Encoder Model+Rev, and Video Decoder/Encoder Firmware File. The HD Input card appears in the Encoder section of the file, while all Decoders appear in the Decoders section. The board’s hardware address (set with the dip switch) appear under the heading Decoder/ Encoder HW Addr. The first address is 0. The addresses can be incremented up to the maximum number of supported boards for the server model. When the server has successfully booted, the board installation is complete. Configure MSi to Include New Channels When the server has successfully started, open the MSi application for the server. Figure 2-3: Configuration Dialog Box and Play Buttons 1. Select Setup > Configuration. The Configuration dialog box appears (Figure 2-3). 2. In the Play Window pane of the Configuration dialog box, select the name for the Play button from the Name menu; for example, Play1. 3. Select a Decoder Port for each channel you have added, and click the Setup button to define the settings for the Port. 4. Click OK. When you exit the Configuration dialog box, there should be new Play buttons on the MSi window for each channel you added. 5. To confirm that the card is operational, click one of the new channel buttons and play a clip. Pinnacle I/O Board Installation Guide 23 Chapter 2: Board Installation and Software Configuration 24 Pinnacle I/O Board Installation Guide Appendix A: Bandwidth Limitations for HD Cards One of the factors in configuring an HD system is the bandwidth limitation. At 50 Mbps, a dualchannel HD Decoder board and an HD Input board uses up to 200 Mbps of bandwidth at maximum load (worse case). Dual Channel Decoder Channel 1 (Port A) Channel 2 (Port B) 50Mb + 25Mb (Cueing) 50Mb + 25Mb (Cueing) = 75Mb = 75Mb HD Input Board Single Input Total 50Mb = 50Mb = 200Mb Note: The MediaStream HD Solution requires an external HD Encoder that can provide an ASI signal to the HD Input board. Appendix A: Bandwidth Limitations for HD Cards 26 Pinnacle I/O Board Installaiton Guide Appendix B: Hybrid Server It is possible to configure a server with both SD and HD capabilities. Two examples are shown below. Carefully consider the total bandwidth usage, as well as the file management of SD and HD clips. Where to Obtain the Connector Contact Amp, Incorporated and ask for the AMPLIMITE® HDP-22 (26 pin) plug, drawing # 748474-1 or equivalent. AMP, Inc. Harrisburg, PA Toll free: 800-522-6752 Phone: 717-564-0100 Fax: 717-986-7575 Web site: www.amp.com Where to Obtain the Cable Use an overall shielded 28 AWG copper drains cable that contains 9 twisted pairs. The outer shield should make a 360-degree connection to the connector shell. Use a Belden™ 9809 cable or equivalent. Belden Wire & Cable Company 2200 US Highway 25 S Richmond, IN 47375 Toll free: 800-235-3361 Phone: 765-983-5200 Fax: 765-983-5294 Web site: www.belden.com Note: Due to the unshielded nature of the twisted pair, audio crosstalk occurs if you make the cable too long. Keep this cable to a length of 5 feet (1.5 m). The alternative is to use a cable that individually shields the twisted pairs. However, this thickens the cable, making connector fit a problem. 30 Pinnacle I/O Board Installaiton Guide Appendix C: Cables Micro D-sub 15 Decoder (Output Audio 8 Channel) Connections Pin No. Pin No. Description Description 1 Analog Output Ch 1 – (Left) 9 NC 2 Analog Output Ch 1 + (Left) 10 Ch 7/8 – 3 Ch 5/6 – 11 Ch 7/8 + 4 Ch 5/6 + 12 Do Not Use 5 Ch 3/4 – 13 Do Not Use 6 Ch 3/4 + 14 Output Analog Ch 2 – (Right) 7 Ch 1/2 – 15 Output Analog Ch 2 + (Right) 8 Ch 1/2 + Dual Decoder CH5/CH6 AES/EBU CH3/CH4 AES/EBU CH1 Analog Left CH1/CH2 AES/EBU 8 1 Audio Output Connector 15 9 CH2 Analog Right Reserved CH7/CH8 AES/EBU Do Not Use Figure C-2: Dual Decoder AES/EBU 8-Channel Audio Output Pinnacle I/O Board Installaiton Guide 31 Appendix C: Cables Dual SD Encoder (Input Audio 8 Channel) Connections Pin No. Description Pin No. Description 1 Do Not Use 9 Do Not Use 2 Do Not Use 10 Ch 7/8 – 3 Ch 5/6 – 11 Ch 7/8 + 4 Ch 5/6 + 12 Do Not Use 5 Ch 3/4 – 13 Do Not Use 6 Ch 3/4 + 14 Do Not Use 7 Ch 1/2 – 15 Do Not Use 8 Ch 1/2 + Dual Encoder CH5/CH6 AES/EBU CH3/CH4 AES/EBU CH1/CH2 AES/EBU Do Not Use 8 1 Audio Output Connector 15 9 Do Not Use Reserved CH7/CH8 AES/EBU Do Not Use Figure C-3: Dual Encoder 8-Channel Audio Input 32 Pinnacle I/O Board Installaiton Guide Appendix D: HD Encoder Setup Tables ASI Input Specifications Input ASI ASI Compliant Connection Burst and Byte mode support for 188 bytes (not 204) 75 ohm input connector Bit Rate 6 - 50 Mb/sec for a single program transport stream (SPTS).
