This is because farmers know one thing for certain – that nothing can be known. Radium Engineering offers one constant to level this playing field of unknowns: expertly designed, reliable implements – manufactured to perform faultlessly over years. joined by the third generation of the Roest family, sons Gareth and Grant, who continues Radium’s efforts to remain at the forefront of technology and design while remaining true to its heritage. Radium Engineering maintains its reputation of quality, original design and reliability. Through an on-going research and Radium’s story started on a Limpopo farm in 1965, when John development program, Radium constantly expand and enriches Roest built a cattle scale, and its immense popularity lead to an their product range, bringing the farmer practical solutions to the operation dedicated to the equipment needs of local farmers. Its on-going changes within the agricultural sector. uncomplicated effective operation was patented and manufacture started. Radium’s strong desire to understand and support their customers bred an owner-to-owner culture that allows for fast accurate decisionDuring the late 1960’s, Mike Roest, John Roest’s son, produced his making. The result is faster improvements and developments of the own wheat planter due to severe droughts and lack of funds. This Radium product line while maintaining a close relationship with each was, yet again, very successful, and by the mid 1970’s the farm client. At Radium the productivity of the customers and their peace workshop became too small to keep up with production. Radium of mind in a fluctuating economy drives our service philosophy. Engineering was officially established in 1976, and has been making the difference ever since. The company ascribes its success to decades of solid experience, an unquenchable passion for the industry and superior after-sales Mike Roest now leads the Radium team of more than 100 skilled service. staff at their base in Babelegi, north of Pretoria. Prior to this, Radium had manufactured a number of makes and models of spreaders for various companies, both internationally and locally. The concept of the Transpread spreaders introduced the innovative design of a chain conveyor system, the three-speed ground-related gearbox and easy adaptation for variable rate spreading. which contribute to the farmer saving both time and money. The Transpread spreaders were developed in, and introduced to New Zealand in the 1960s by Dave Hoyle. These spreaders are now manufactured on four continents and distributed throughout the world. This allows for an effective network of information to be shared globally, always ensuring that the customer can purchase a machine that is manufactured in accordance with the most recently optimised international specifications. Extensive testing and development ensure unbeatable spreading precision, with easy-to-use controls and ultimate flexibility, 2015 marked the introduction of the all new range of Generation III spreaders. While the fundamental workings of the machine stayed true to the basic principles of the original TranSpread, all ergonomics and features have been revised – offering our customers even more versatility and practicality with their spreading operations. More user friendly controls have been implemented and it incorporates an exciting and more attractive design. Today, Radium offers the farmer and contractor four different classes of spreaders, from specialised models with reduced and compact dimensions to suit viticulture and horticultural practices, to models capable of spreading extremely low rates of fertiliser, to heavy rates of lime and dry organic materials. 2 EconoSpread 3 The EconoSpread models provide an economically viable option for the small to medium-scale farmer wanting to spread a full range of materials. This class of spreaders is able to spread from extremely low rates of various fertilisers, to medium and high rates of agricultural lime and gypsum, as well as low-to-medium rates of dry organic materials. 4 Features • High-quality Painted mild steel bin and chassis construction is a welded construction made of sheet metal and plate while the chassis is constructed of a high grade tubing to offer addition strength and flex during operation. • Hitch Safety Chain is a precautionary measure taken in case the hitch, hitch bolts or tractor drawbar breaks during operation. • A robust parking jack makes for easy hitching and detachment of the machine before and after operation. • S-design Drawbar allows for a sharper turning circle ensuring greater and more streamlined movability. As production continued Radium recognised that local farming practices required more suitable instruments. In conjunction with the former Agricultural Technical Services, Radium Engineering embarked on a research and development project. The aim was to create a product that could work at depths of 500mm without changing the angle of the shear. The outcome was the four-lever springtrip mechanism. The four-lever trip mechanism keeps the angle of the shear constant and trips-out when obstacles are encountered in the soil. The new device required a strong frame to carry the heavy tine assemblies. Radium Engineering therefore designed and developed the robust A-frame. The last step was to develop a shear and tine that would overcome the problematic bulldozing-effect of its predecessors. Mike Roest of Radium Engineering subsequently developed the V-sweep shear that did not smear the soil. This innovation led to the next advance, the hammerhead shear. Carefully engineered, the hammerhead design lifts the soil two inches and allows it to break up naturally as it flows over the shear. Unrivalled in efficiency, the hammerhead shear uses the least amount of energy per cubic meter of soil disturbed. The C-shaped tine was developed to allow the soil to flow freely over the shear while maintaining a surface angle that reduces packing of excess material among the tines. 22 Shear Comparison - 100 - 200 - 300 - 400 1700 1500 1300 1100 900 700 500 - 500 300 Various Shears and their Energy Requirements 0 100 The hammerhead shear focusses all of the energy in the direction of travel. By using the correct combination of shear, tine, frame and trip mechanism (or shear-bolt mechanism) the entire working width of the machine can be thoroughly tilled at no extra cost. The vacuum formed beneath the shear guarantees that no smearing takes place and that no compaction layer forms. Designed to work with the soil, the hammerhead shear does not cause side-compaction. It simply breaks the soil into its natural state to improve soil structure, aeration and water-absorption. It ensures an optimum environment for any root system. Normal Knock-on Point Shears vs Radium Hammerhead Shears Energy use in kN A 23 B C D E F, G, H Green line – Hammerhead shear Soil profile: • Working with a 50mm knock-on-point • Effective soil disturbance = 36% of total working width and depth Energy requirements: • Specific energy: 94 KJ p/m³ of soil disturbed • Energy per hectare: 33 kW/ha • Fuel consumption: 18 l/ha Red line – Normal knock-on point Soil profile: • Working with a 300mm hammer-head shear • Effective soil disturbance = 85% of total working width and depth Energy requirements: • Specific energy: 37 KJ p/m³ of soil disturbed • Energy per hectare: 31 kW/ha • Fuel consumption: 17 l/ha Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice Four-Level Spring-Trip Mechanism Spring Trip Mechanism consists of a four-lever spring trip mechanism design that keeps the tine and shear in the ground at a constant angle, which achieves the optimum and real depth without altering the angle of the shear. If obstacles in the soil exert more than 18kN of force on the point, the mechanism will trip and allow the tine to move freely over obstacles before resetting itself. Spring Trip Mechanism in working position Shear Bolt Shank Protection is an additional safety that protects the tines and the mechanism if the jumpheight is insufficient. The high tensile bolt shears apart under excessive force, allowing the shank to give way to an unmovable obstacle and prevents further damage to the mechanism and the machine. Cast Steel Shank Cast Steel Shanks is a new design with improved wearing properties and greater flexibility which improves the tines’ lifespan while reducing the customer’s opreational costs. Spring Trip Mechanism in trip position Hybrid Shears combine the effective hammerhead shears with the traditional V-sweep’s design which optimises the wearing properties of the shear while utilzing 100% of the energy in the direction of travel. The new “shark-fin” design also lessens abrasion on the wear bar and tine thus, further reducing operational costs. Wear Bars prevent any wear on the front of the tine. With the new reversible design the lifespan can be doubled while still offering adecute protection to the tine and once again reducing opperationl costs. Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice Hybrid Shears Wear Bars 24 PowerRip 25 The Radium PowerRip is about the effective use of energy. It is a basic, three-point mounted machine that comes in practical sizes to match the available horsepower of most tractors. The machine manoeuvers easily on the headland and thus increases productivity. Weight is transferred to the front wheels of the tractor via the top link of the PowerRip. This reduces wheel slip and uses the tractor’s output more efficiently. For reduced rolling resistance and optimised fuel consumption, the machine is constructed without large carry wheels. The unique tine configuration of the PowerRip allows for easy material flow. This reduces the packing of material within the tine layout and minimises wear on the components. These machines have a maximum work depth of 550mm and a maximum work speed of 7.5km/h. The PowerRip is a practical and versatile solution for most farming practices. 26 Features • Robust Frame Construction »» Manufactured from high-grade square and rectangular tubing »» Reinforced with steel plates »» Torque and stresses are evenly distributed across the frame »» Unique design and shank trip assemblies prevent breakages • 450mm Tine Spacing »» 250mm shears till the soil completely over the entire work width of the machine »» Optimises material flow »» Reduces packing of material within the shanks • 500mm Tine Spacing »» Wider tine spacing optimises work width »» Requires NO additional horsepower from the tractor »» Improves material flow in fields with heavy amounts of surface trash Optional Features • Coulters • Cage Rollers Universal 3-point Hitches 27 Depth Control Wheels Coulters Cage Rollers Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice Specifications MODEL NO. Radium regarded the issues carefully and developed the ZoneTill. The concept of this machine is to work the soil only in the root-development areas by configuring the tiller exactly like the planter. This enables the farmer to work only particular strips of soil over wider areas. The result is increased productivity and lower input costs. Radium kept the design of the ZoneTill simple and robust. The spring-trip assembly from the PowerRip, along with the unique C-shaped tine and hammerhead shear, lets the farmer disturb the greatest amount of soil around the root zone while using the least amount of energy. The unbeatable hammerhead shear ensures that no side compaction or smearing occurs. This encourages early and improved root development, faster water absorption and increased soil aeration. The ZoneTill creates an ideal seedbed for row crops. Working in stubble and surface material is hassle-free with the addition of coulters, row closers and rollers. Further tillage operations, like the use of disc harrows, are no longer necessary. The rear-mounted rollers break apart larger clods usually brought to the surface during dry season. This versatile machine thereby allows farmers to work the soil whenever it suits them 30 Features • • • • • Robust Frame Construction, manufactured from high- grade square and rectangular tubing and reinforced with steel plates. In cooperation with the former Agricultural Technical Services, Radium embarked on a research and development campaign. Initial testing revealed that ripping in specific soil types, like sandy soils, caused unforeseen complications. When tines penetrated deeper than 500mm, a compaction layer could form from the bottom upwards. The result was a tunnel-like effect deep below the surface that would ultimately lead to even greater compaction. After several experiments the Dual Tine Ripper was born. The idea was to run two or three aligned tines directly behind one another. Each tine then rips only 300mm of soil. Tine-positioning was absolutely critical in allowing each shear to work in the vacuum created by the shear ahead of it. Incorrect placement required double the amount of work and drastically increased energy requirements. Radium determined the correct combination of shears, their sequence and size and found that draught requirements were considerably reduced. Radium’s new design used 40% less energy and the result was an ideal root zone of up to 1000mm deep without any side-compaction. The Dual Tine Ripper eliminated compaction around and below the deep-working sheers and allowed water and roots to penetrate deeper for improved and more consistent growth. 34 Features • • • • Robust Frame Construction, from high-grade square and rectangular tubing reinforced with steel plates, ensures that torque and stresses are evenly distributed across the frame. The unique design and shank trip assemblies prevent breakages. Customized Row Spacing, according to the planter or the row widths of the crops allows the machine and the planter to work in the same zone. Hardened Bushes on the Tine Clamp prevent elongation where the shear bolts and swivel bolts are attached ensuring the shear angle remains constant and true. Its original purpose was to break up compacted soil just below the grazing plane on planted pastures. The design has proven far more versatile and its use in natural pastures, on instant lawn, or for small-scale ripping is increasingly popular. Coulters slice a neat path ahead of each shank as they pass through the pasture. The shanks are designed to lift the soil beneath the surface of the grazing and/or pasture without causing any damage to the surface crop. Behind the shank a roller firms out the surface and closes any furrows left in its wake. Regular use of a Radium Pasturator aerates the soil and increases water movement and penetration. Improved root development in pastures result in a greater crop yield. A good pasturator is essential to reduce the compaction caused by livestock and vehicle movement over pastures and lands. 38 Features • Robust Frame Construction »» Manufactured from high-grade square and rectangular tubing »» Reinforced with steel plates »» Torque and stresses are evenly distributed across the frame »» Unique design and shank trip assemblies prevent breakages • Universal 3-point Hitches »» Robust 3-point hitches welded onto the frame and reinforced »» Meets international ISO standards »» Adjust the top pin to switch between standard- and quick-hitch linkage • Adjustable Tine Spacing »» Tine clamps and coulters are adjustable »» Set various row widths to suit the requirements »» Allows for tines to be added and removed • Staggered Tine Alignment »» Shanks are staggered along the beam »» Improves material flow »» Prevents large clods from being brought up in dry conditions • Various Shear Options »» Several different shears available to suit all conditions »» Easily swop around by means of a knock-on- point Coulters 39 Cage Roller with Depth Control Shear Bolt Shank Protection Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice Specifications MODEL NO. Cleaner and more level lands is becoming a necessity for farmers due to larger, more sophisticated planting, application and tillage equipment which are sensitive to foreign obstacles such as rocks in the field. The importance of working faster and more productively is increasing and the Rock Removal Equipment assists in achieving this. A clean even field not only allows for greater production and faster in-land applications, but also reduces maintenance and unforeseen breakages on tractors and equipment that work in-field. 42 Rock Windrowers 43 The Pivoting Rock Windrower is designed to windrow small to medium rocks with ease, forming them into neat uniform rows ready for pick up by a rock picker. Roots, stumps, chips and other debris from land clearing operations can also be windrowed. As an added bonus, the windrower has a roto-tilling action which tends to break up lumps and level the ground. Its added tooth length increases the combing action of the rake and allows for superior windrowing of rocks. Rural municipalities and counties use it to reclaim gravel from roadsides, proving the machine’s rugged construction and durability. This implement employs a side delivery frame arrangement which allows the operator to better control the size of windrows, regardless of rock conditions. The windrower’s patented floating drum arrangement allows the wheels to be placed closer to the windrower drum, resulting in excellent ground following characteristics. Power is supplied to the windrower drum via a heavy duty PTO drive line which includes a slip clutch and shear bolt arrangement for protection against excessive shock loads. The final drive chain is totally enclosed for longer service life. 44 Features • • • • • • • Ultra-narrow transport width allows the farmer to transport the windrower with ease from field to field. The tine bars are spring loaded – when there is a large rock the spring stretches to absorb the shock loading. These units windrow scattered rock from 5cm to 69cm diameter, into neat rows, greatly reducing the time required to clear rock and debris from the field. Fields full of rocks are a menace for all farmers – some might even feel there is a new crop of stones each season. This creates havoc on harrowing, harvesting and mowing machines. Due to the increasing costs of manual labour over the last couple of years, mechanical stone and rock picking has become a critical part of farming. This increases the lifespan of other implements as well as productivity, and helps to save time. 48 Features • • • • • • • • • Extra-long hitch pole pole is adjusted from transport to field position by means of a hydraulic cylinder and improves the picking performance by positioning the rock picker grate to the side of the tractor for ease of visual picking. The Generation III ProCut Rotary Cutters received a complete overhaul while retaining the basic principles that have made them so successful. The Radium design team enhanced the ergonomics and cosmetic appearances and also focussed on the cutting and drive line systems. The new blade system incorporates the principles of the Schulte Rotary Cutters: their tried and tested blades and blade bolts increases the longevity and performance of the machine. The newly designed ultra-heavy duty spinner plates increases the blade movement whilst decreasing stresses on the drive line. Radium Engineering introduced a higher blade tip speed for a cleaner, more effective cut. It is powered by imported, extra heavy duty gearboxes with high torque and power ratings. This will supersede the output power rating of the average tractor used in front of the differently sized machines. The new PTO shafts are oversized with pre-torqued and self-adjusting slip-clutches to ensure the correct tension is always applied to the clutches. This ensures accurate slipping and prevents any damages to the gearbox. New safety chains in the front and the rear of the machine stop foreign objects from exiting the working zone and causing damage to the tractor. It also reduces incidents that can result in injury to bystanders. The new safety chain system allows the machine to be operated in both forward and backward operations for bush clearing and applications where front mounted 3-point hitches are applicable. New hitches have been installed to fit all category II hitches. A new floating system has been incorporated that works in conjunction with the new trailing wheels and height control system, ensuring a constant and even cut. 54 Features • • • • • • • • 55 Ultra robust frame and body construction keeps the deck of the machine rigid while holding the drive line and blad mechanisms in place, while keeping the operator safe from any flying opbjects. Due to the innovative design, minimal horsepower is required to work a greater area and to achieve huge cost reductions. The Flex-Wing design encourages a constant and even cut over the entire work width of the machine, regardless of the terain as each section independently cuts its area without leaving an overlap. 58 Features • Domed Deck is constructed out of 5mm thick material and is continuously welded. This design makes the cutter easy to clean and prevents pooling of water and rusting and helps shed debris faster and easier during operation. • Increased Frame Dept improves material flow underneath the machine and reduces input power requirements. • Heavy Duty Stub Axles comprise of extremely durable hubs and spindles that hold the wheels and carry the weight of the machine. • Deck Protections Rings protects the deck from the blades, should an encounter with a foreign object cause the blades to jump up.. • Wheel System employs heavy-duty turnbuckles which link the central wheel system to the wheel system on the folding wings and ensures a constant and level cutting height throughout the machine. • Heavy Duty Drive Line System is a robust system that ensures peak performance at all times and is compiled of a splitter gearbox and right-angel gearboxes joined together by heavy-duty PTO shafts with self-adjusting slip clutches. • Single Centre Lock-up System allows the operator to lock the lifting cylinder into place for transport. • Susspension comprises of either a heavy duty rubber puck system or compression spring to eliminate shock on the tractor as well as on the machine. • Jumper pans are a spun formed pan that fits over the spinner bar, which allows the machine to move over foreighn obsticles when entoured during cutting. 59 Spun Formed Jumper Pans Heavy Duty Drive Line System Ball valve wing lock up system Levelling System Centre Suspension Heavy duty cast hinge line with wiper seals Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice Specifications MODEL FX1800 FX318 FX520 FX5026 FX530 FX742 CUTTING WIDTH (mm) 4570 5500 6100 7980 9300 12800 CUTTING HEIGHT (mm) 44-425 44-425 51-445 25-356 50-380 50-406 4750 4900 4900 4700 4970 4970 25⁰ down 30⁰ up 25⁰ down 30⁰ up 25⁰ down 40⁰ up 15⁰ down 45⁰ up 16⁰ down 21⁰ up 11⁰ down 13⁰ up 8⁰ down 9⁰ up 260/194 260/194 260/194 260/194 350/261 350/261 3 x 210/157 3 x 210/157 5 x 210/157 5 x 210/157 5 x 210/157 7 x 210/157 WIDTH (mm) 4830 5800 6200 8150 9600 13100 TRANSPORT WIDTH (mm) 2360 2200 2640 2980 3000/3880 3000 LENGTH (mm) 5130 5300 6150 5130 6000 7400 TRANSPORT HEIGHT (mm) 2130 2770 3050 3760 3900/4500 4200 WEIGHT (kg's) 2320 2635 2960 3583 5580 8165 HITCH WEIGHT (kg's) 775 1066 1034 1089 2041 2950 85/63 90/67 100/75 120/90 200/150 250/186 BLADE TIP SPEED (m/min) WING FLOATING RANGE DIVIDER GEARBOX RATING (hp/kw) CENTRE & WING GEARBOX RATING (hp/kw) TRACTOR POWER REQUIREMENT (hp/kw) Due to a process of on-going product development, Radium Engineering reserves the right to change any details or specifications without prior notice 60 Fixed Knife Technology 61 Adopting all the characteristics of the Flex-Wing Rotary Cutters, Fixed Knife Technology is introduced by fitting two blades, one above another, on each side of the cutter bar that replaces the jumper pan unit. Stationary fixed knives are then strategically positioned under the deck of the cutter, whereby the two knives pass over and under the fixed knife, slamming the crop residue into the fixed knife. This material is then broken up and distributed evenly across the work width of the machine by making use of baffle plates. The points of each rotating blade split in two and pass by both sides of a fixed blade. The cut plant material or crop residues is then pulled in and carved up. The fixed blades are mounted on shear bolts, while all rotating blades are protected by slip clutches. It is just as handy for fruit and grape farmers that want to shred branches and leaves for compost during the pruning season. 62 Features • Using Schulte’s Fixed Knife Technology, crop residue is slammed into stationary fixed knives, mounted in strategic positions under the deck of the cutter, by free swinging blade sets moving at up to 16,000 feet per minute. • Mounted baffle distribution plates direct the mulched material out of the cutter with an even spread. • Shattered stalks or crop residue decompose rapidly because the shattered material is opened to microbes and weathering. • The stationary fixed knives are protected by shear bolts which allow them to pivot when required. The free swinging blades are each protected individually 63 by slip clutches. • Schulte flex wing cutters are manoeuvrable with easy 3m transport width, even on the largest models. Many competitive flail choppers are very wide to transport or must be end towed. • Schulte flex wing cutters have built in suspension to handle the roughest ground conditions. • Schulte flex wing cutters are designed to work in most row crop spacing’s by using adjustable wheel standards or axle spindles. • Optional rubber belting on each model helps to create more vacuum under the cutter deck and control blow out of material which can then fall on top of the deck. • Fixed knives with free swinging updraft bottom blades are to be used in dry material, such as corn, sun flowers, rice, oil seed, cereal crops and grass seed straw. • Fixed knives with free swinging flat bottom blades are generally used to cut green material or wet cotton stalks. • Fixed knives can be easily removed to cut green grass and pasture or set aside making the Schulte cutter a multipurpose tool as compared to traditional flail choppers. • Fixed Knife units can also be used in orchard or vineyard pruning’s to mulch branches. Soon Radium decided to extend their own product range with the addition of various forms of maintenance graders. Since then constant improvements have been made to these machines. Radium Engineering boasts a range of graders that are user-friendly, practical and multipurpose. Their robust designs require minimal maintenance. Built for road development and maintenance, Radium’s new road graders are versatile enough to be used for contours, fence-line clearing, land-levelling, fire-breaks and cut-lines. 76 3-Point Grader This light-duty maintenance grader couples directly to the tractor’s 3-point linkage. The basic design allows for all operations to be carried out mechanically. The blade can be rotated 360 degrees for pushing and levelling. 77 Features • • • • • • Weighted Mouldboard aadds additional weight on the cutting edge and increases ground penetration, while preventing the machine from moving around during operation. Mechanical Blade Tilt adjusts the blade from left to right, which easily creates a chamber on the road surface or on contours. Off-Centre Operation allows the blade to work in an off-centre position to work along fence lines or under low-lying branches where tractors cannot pass. 360 Degree Blade Rotation sets the blade to fixed points for the required angle which allows material to move to the desired side of the blade. Full blade rotation allows the blade to work in the reverse direction to push or level various materials and areas. Depth Control sets the working depth by means or two, rear, depth control skids and also prevents removing too much material. Category I and II Hitch allows the operator to easily switch between bigger and smaller tractors.
