WHY IS DUST CONTROL SO IMPORTANT? Main contractors and the HSE are increasingly concerned about the dangers of dust. The HSE say ‘Construction dust is not just a nuisance - it can seriously damage your health. Regularly breathing in these dusts over a long time can cause life-changing lung diseases’. The threat is not only to your health but also organisations have a responsibility to protect their workforce and using out dated equipment can have serious legal implications. That’s why dust extraction should be high on your agenda. Drilling, milling, grinding and sawing often create very high dust emissions. The danger is that without the relevant protective measures, the smallest of dust particles, often invisible to the human eye, are breathed in. In the worst cases these penetrate the small sacs within our lungs, where they can cause severe damage.
WHAT TYPE OF VACUUM DO I NEED? So, whatever task awaits you on site; grinding concrete, sanding plaster, wood or paint, even draining flooded rooms - tackle it with the correct vacuum. It is important first of all to identify dust particle size in your environment, the smaller the particles the more damage they can do to your health, so choosing the correct type of vacuum is crucial.

Dust Class L (low hazardous dust) This filters 99% of all dust that is extracted. The air that is exhausted only contains dust particles of less than 1mg.
Dust Class M (medium hazardous dust) This filters 99.95% of all dust that is extracted. This means that the air that is exhausted has particles of dust less than 0.1mg still in it.
Dust Class H (high hazardous dust) This filters 99.997% of all dust that is extracted. This filters out more of the finer dust particles that can be harmful.
MDF and Asbestos dust require H Class extractors due to the fine dust that is present when dealing with them.

LOOK AFTER YOUR LUNGS
Many industries are exposed to dust pollution. Not all dust is the same and some are more harmful than others. Excessive exposure to some has been linked to the development of particular health problems, such as lung cancer or asthma. In some cases exposure can cause life altering and in some cases premature life-ending illnesses. But did you know that the following materials can also cause many health issues:
Flour Flour dust and enzymes containing additives such as amylase are the second most common cause of occupational asthma. They also cause dermatitis. It can affect workers in bakeries, flour mills and kitchens.
Grain Grain dust is the dust produced from the harvesting, drying, handling, storage or processing of barley, wheat, oats, maize or rye and includes any contaminants or additives within the dust (eg.bacteria, endotoxin, fungal spores, insects and insect debris, pesticide residues). Health risks are also likely to arise from exposure to dusts produced by other types of grain, eg. rice, sorgh. Respiratory disease caused by this dust is a major occupational health risk in agriculture and the number of asthma cases is now double the national average.

The most talked about hazardous dust is Asbestos when materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything. Diseases such as Mesothelioma and Asbestosis being the most dangerous.
Silica Dust from rocks, sand, clay, bricks and concrete. In the workplace these materials create dust when they are cut, sanded, carved etc.Some of this dust may be fine enough to breathe deeply into your lungs and cause harm to your health. The fine dust is called respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and is too fine to see with normal lighting.

Wood Wood dust can cause serious health problems. It can cause asthma, which carpenters and joiners are four times more likely to get compared with other UK workers. Under current legislation softwood, hardwood dust and formaldehyde are considered to be hazardous to health. Both are known to be respiratory sensitisers and may cause asthma and other respiratory problems. Hardwood dust can also cause a rare form of nasal cancer. Formaldehyde is classified in the UK, and in the EU as a carcinogen and it carries the hazard statement ‘suspected of causing cancer’ So in view of all this, our advice is to protect yourself at work, which is why we’re putting dust contol at the forefront of our business to help yours.

DV-35-MB The MaxVac Dura DV-35-MB is a single motor vacuum. It has 2000watt power take off with auto run and filter clean. The vacuum has wet and dry capability and with a 35ltr drum it is useful in many scenarios. The vacuum has a manual filter clean button as well as it cleaning in trigger rest time. The vacuum is fitted with metal castors with non-mark wheels meaning it can be used on a variety of surfaces. The drum is extremely tough and can withstand the toughest of treatment, the motor housing is also very tough and can withstand impact.

UV-126-HBS The MaxVac UV-126-HBS uses new generation cordless brushless technology to provide high power with very low current draw. Using either 20 or 30AH batteries it can operate for up to 1.5hours. The vacuum is powered by one brushless motor. Being brushless means the vacuum is completely waterproof (IP54 rated) and can be washed down to remove contamination within the vacuum. Fitted with H Class filters the vacuum ensures a high efficiency of filtration. The filter is protected by a micro pre-filter. The exhaust air can be funnelled through a pipe to take away from the area of work if needed. The vacuum has a bin system to collect waste. It can be fitted with a bag as needed. The vacuum also has large wheels for ease of transport and has a collapsible handle for moving it around.

The MaxVac UV-456-HLS uses new generation brushless technology to provide high power with very low current draw. The vacuum is powered by two brushless motors. Being brushless means the vacuum is completely waterproof (IP54 rated) and can be washed down to remove contamination within the vacuum. Fitted with H Class filters the vacuum ensures a high efficiency of filtration. The filter is protected by a mirco pre-filter and is cleaned using a manual shaker system. The vacuum is fitted with the Longopac system to ensure safe disposal of any waste. The vacuum also has large wheels for ease of transport and has two height settings to enable it top be collapsed when moving in a van to save space.

The vacuum is fitted with M Class filters which are cleaned using reverse air system operated by an on-board compressor built into the vacuum controlled by onboard timers. The filter cleaning system is very efficient using high pressure air to keep the filter cartridges clean. This increases the life of the filters and ensures maintenance of suction at all times. It is possible to vacuum wet with this vacuum when fitted with a drum container. The vacuum is fitted with a steel bin or the Longopac bagging system allowing waste to be disposed of safely. 425-MBS The MaxVac MV-425-MBS is a single phase turbine vacuum for use in most situations. Powered by a side channel type turbine unit it is completely maintenance free and can provide round the clock service. This type of motor requires no transmission therefore making it very silent. A thermal switch is fitted in case of overheating. A vacuum gauge is fitted to enable suction levels and helps to detect when the filter is blocked. The vacuum is fitted with M Class filters which are cleaned using manual filter shake system operated by a handle on the side of the vacuum.

The Pre-separators MV-220-L and MV-450-L with Longopac safe collection and disposal system can be used with all MaxVac vacuums. This means you can collect large amounts of material which increases the collection capacity and improves the disposal of collected materials. The Longopac bagging system is especially suitable in applications that involve collection and disposing of hazardous and toxic materials. ATEX ANTI-EXPLOSION VACUUM CLEANERS Employers are required by law to classify areas where hazardous explosive atmospheres may occur into zones and these areas must be protected from sources of ignition. The classification given to a particular zone, depends on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring and its persistence if it does. All equipment (electrical or mechanical) for use in zoned areas must meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive. The directive covers a large range of equipment, in a wide variety of industries including fixed offshore platforms, petrochemical plants, mines, flour mills and other areas where a potentially explosive atmos-phere may be present. Once the equipment has been tested and certified, it is then marked by the ’CE’ and ’EX’ symbols.

The hazardous places are classified into zones based on the frequency and duration of a hazardous explosive atmosphere: Gas, Mists or Vapors.
Zone 0 - An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present frequently, continuously or for long periods.
Only Category I equipment can be used in Zone 0.
Zone 1 - An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Only Category I and II equipment can be used in Zone 1.
Zone 2 - An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for only a short period.
Category I, II and III equipment can be used in Zone 2.
Dusts Zone 20 - An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is present frequently, continuously or for long periods.
Only Category I equipment can be used in Zone 20.
Zone 21 - An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Only Category I and II equipment can be used in Zone 21.
Zone 22 - An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for only a short period.
Category I, II and III equipment can be used in Zone 22.
Category I equipment - equipment with a very high level of protection. Category II equipment - equipment with a high level of protection. Category III equipment - equipment with a normal level of protection.

WHY DO YOU NEED A DUSTBLOCKER? No matter what industry you are in there is always dust you cannot see. Whether it is the food industry, bakeries, schools, car manufacturing plants, shop refit industry, hospital works, care homes or even just in the office or at the doctors surgery. With the Dustblocker Pro range we can offer a full service from specification to long term lease and full filter service. We come on site and measure the dust particles in the air and take several measurements. We then put that data into a special form which in turn provides us with an average and also a recommendation of what machine is needed to bring the air dust levels to meet the current EU recommendations. What will a Dustblocker do for me? Dust in the air is often dust we cannot see but can also be the more harmful dust. DustBlocker is also often used in bakeries to keep the flour dust in the air down. DustBlocker are also used to reduce the cleaning needed when handing over a shop fit out, a hospital ward or an office and other environments. They filter out the dust that normally settles over the area. We can offer a full set up and initial clean service using these machines if needed.
TO MEASURE IS TO KNOW Regulations Considering the very strict regulation of 0.075 mg per m³ of silica dust in the breathing zone of a user (corresponds with a volume of 0.5 cm silica dust in a plastic coffee cup in a room with a surface area of a football pitch and a height of 4 metres!). It is virtually impossible to meet these strict requirements without using room cleaners, such as the Dustblocker range that are specifically developed for this purpose. Under virtually all circumstances, DustBlockers are able to provide great results. This is essential for the construction supervisor, considering the announcement by the Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate that the employer is obliged to prove that exposure to hazardous substances (respirable silica, wood dust, etc) on the workplace remains below the current limit values, whereby the total system (tool, extraction module, vacuum cleaner, water supply) is measured as point of departure. Fines for not observing the regulations may run up to £8,000 per workplace, and it is even possible that the work activities must be stopped.
