With 4:2:2 digital component pictures and 4-channel digital audio, the AJ-D970 supports high-end programme production. It also debuts as the first DVCPRO50 studio editing VTR to feature a pre-read function. In addition to allowing assemble and insert editing, the pre-read function lets you add voice-overs and effects with a single machine. The AJ-D970 comes equipped for serial digital input and output, allowing digital-to-digital connection for superior editing with virtually no degradation in picture or sound quality. Also able to record, play back, and edit in the DVCPRO format, the AJ-D970 is a multifunctional digital VTR that meets a host of programme production needs.
Pre-Read Editing A new high-speed read/write technology and newly developed digital processing technique team up to enable pre-read editing and voice-overs with the AJ-D970. By processing the images and sounds as it plays them back, and then returning the result as input, the AJ-D970 can single-handedly edit a source tape directly. An external audio mixer can be used for voice-overs, or a switcher can be used to insert titles, adjust colours, or add effects. DVCPRO50 lets you create high-end video productions with 4:2:2 component video recording and playback. Featuring a 3.3:1 compression ratio, picture degradation is minimal during both compression and decompression, so the 4:2:2 images retain their superior quality.
The AJ-D970 offers forward and reverse shuttle search at up to 32 times normal speed, in both DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO modes. A jog mode is included. The AJ-D970 can also play back digital audio at -10 to +10 times normal speed in both DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO, for quick, precise audio indexing.
4-Channel Digital Audio The AJ-D970 has four channels of high-quality 48-kHz/16bit digital audio. A level meter for each channel provides a continuous display of the recording or playback level. A linear cue track adds convenience when searching for edit points. *There are two digital audio channels in DVCPRO mode.
Complete Editing Functions in both DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO Modes The AJ-D970 offers both assemble and insert editing functions, as well as preview, review and trim functions. Using the RS-422A control interface, single-event editing and audio split are possible with industry standard edit controllers.
DVCPRO50/DVCPRO Switchable Recording The AJ-D970 can record and play back in both the DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO formats. In DVCPRO50, the AJ-D970 can record up to 92 minutes onto an AJ-5P92LP compact 1/4" cassette tape, while in DVCPRO mode recording time is doubled, to 184 minutes*. In playback, the AJ-D970 automatically detects which format the tape was recorded in and switches accordingly. *When recording in the DVCPRO50 format onto a DVCPRO tape, the recording time will be half that indicated on the cassette.
Digital Slow Motion The AJ-D970 offers variable slow and fast motion playback for superior picture quality in either forward or reverse at –1x to +1x normal speed in both DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO. Speed can be set for optimum creative results.

• The AJ-D970 comes standard with SDI (Serial Digital Interface), allowing input/output of digital component video and embedded digital audio (4 channels). • The AJ-D970 comes standard with AES/EBU digital audio in/out (4 channels).
The use of intra-frame compression in both DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO modes enables tape-to-tape editing with to-theframe precision. There's no picture degradation in the edit points.
Analogue Input/Output and Remote
In digital recording, the channel condition indicates playback quality. Lamps on the front panel give the operator the convenience of seeing the actual condition.

Channel Condition Indication
Easy Set-Up With On-Screen Display A number of initial settings can be changed easily with onscreen convenience. The display combines a simple, straight-forward control panel with a host of functions.
Internal Signal Generator The AJ-D970 features a built-in signal generator for black burst or colour bar images, which can then be recorded. The colour bar is 100%/75% switchable.
Compact Size, Easy Installation and Easy to Carry With its compact 4U size, the AJD970 fits into a 19-inch rack using the optional AJ-MA75P* rack mount adaptor for easy installation both in the studio and in OB vans. Easy-to-carry handles are also comes standard with AJ-D970.
