Plastic beakers general information Plastic Beakers Graduation marks on beakers are not intended for obtaining a precise measurement of volume (a graduated cylinder would be a more appropriate instrument for such a task), but rather an estimation. Common plastics for beakers PP (Polypropylene) • • • • • • Beakers with lips mean that it cannot have a lid. However, when in use, beakers may be covered by a watch glass to prevent contamination or loss of the contents, but allowing venting via the spout. Translucent rigid polymer Temperature range 0 to +135ºC Autoclavable (repeatedly) Good to excellent chemical resistance Impact resistant Used for beakers, bottles, cylinders and screw closures. Common types of beakers Low Form: Standard or "Low-form" beakers typically have a height about 1.4 times the diameter. The common low form with a spout has been called the Griffin form. Generally supplied in a choice of translucent Polypropylene or Transparent Polymethylpentene with either printed or molded in graduations (marked on the side with lines indicating the volume contained). Dynalon offers the popular “Square Ratio” beakers that are the safe, convenient alternative to griffin style beakers. These beakers feature a vertical lip around the top of the beaker which serves two purposes: first the lip contains many spills that may occur with the rounded design of a griffin style beaker. Second, this vertical lip allows the beakers to be stacked together in sets when not in use. Tall Form: "Tall form" beakers have a height about twice the diameter. These are sometimes called Berzelius beakers. A beaker is distinguished from a flask by having sides which are straight rather than sloping. The exception to this definition is a slightly conical sided beaker called a Phillips beaker. Plastic bottles general information Plastic Bottles A bottle is a rigid container with a neck that is narrower than the body and a "mouth". Bottles are typically used to store and dispense liquids. A device applied in the bottling line to seal the mouth of a bottle is termed an external bottle cap or closure and is commonly referred to by it’s diameter in millimeters. Common plastics for bottles LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) • • • • • • Bottles are often recycled according to the SPI recycling code for the material, but the chemical or biological contents in the bottle may prevent recycling. Check with a local recycling center for appropriate information. Dispensing Bottles: Bottles made of flexible polymers such as LDPE for small volume dispensing of liquids, by drop or stream. Often used with solvents. Certain wash bottles are vented in the draw tube to relieve vapor pressure from volatile chemicals/solutions. Plastic cylinders general information Plastic Cylinder A graduated cylinder, also known as a measuring cylinder is a piece of laboratory equipment used to accurately measure the volume of liquids. Graduated cylinders are generally more accurate and precise for this purpose than flasks and beakers.
