Telect’s 1 RU Multifunction Panel Enables DSX-1, DSX-3, Ethernet and Fiber Optic Management Through a Space-Saving Modular Design
Telect’s 1 RU multifunction panel, with DSX-3, fiber optic patch and DSX-1 modules installed.
A national wireless service provider looking to create an access test point in cell site applications faced a common challenge – specifically, how to deploy required capabilities in minimal available space.
• Enclosed chassis: The fully enclosed 1 RU chassis provides better RF protection, a key factor in wireless applications. Furthermore, the enclosed panel enhances the protection of individual modules to help minimize the potential for performance problems. In addition to the 3-module rackmount chassis, wall-mount solutions are also available. For a complete list of chassis options, see the table on page 2.
Generally, low circuit counts meant that a full DSX-1 panel, typically 3 RU or 4 RU in height, was not an ideal solution. Similarly, with a single DS3 running through the site, dedicating space to a full DSX-3 panel wasn’t realistic either. In both cases, the majority of the available capacity in each panel would go unused, and significant rack space would be filled with unnecessary equipment.
• Sufficient capacity: A fully loaded 1 RU panel provides sufficient circuit capacity for most low circuit count/network edge applications. A DSX-1 configuration, for example, can reach up to 24 total terminations in just 1 RU. Fiber optic panel densities include 36 total patch ports, if the panel is dedicated exclusively to fiber. Combining functionality through different module types will typically provide more than enough termination capacity, and is the real advantage of the 1 RU modular panel.
The Solution: 1 RU Multifunction Panel To address this challenge, the wireless company specified Telect’s 1 RU multifunctional panel, a compact, versatile system that incorporates a modular design to enable the management of multiple signal types in a single platform. Sufficient capacity fits in just 1 RU of space (1.75 inches of vertical height) to maximize the limited real estate available in the typical cell site.
• Multifunctionality: A mentioned above, multifunctionality in minimal space is the true advantage of Telect’s 1 RU modular panel. In the example detailed above, the user dedicated the panel to DSX-1 and DSX-3 connectivity. Other users have configured the panel for additional functionality. In wireless backhaul applications, for example, the panel can incorporate a fiber optic module to terminate incoming fiber at a remote site; a DSX-1 module to cross-connect to a T1 test panel; and an Ethernet module to interface with a router. Based on the application, the possibilities are broadranging
In this example, the provider utilized the panel for DSX-1 and DSX-3 connectivity. Each chassis, which mounts in standard equipment racks, accommodates three connectivity modules. Typical configurations included panels with two 8-termination DSX-1 modules and a single 2-termination DSX-3 module. In total, the panel provided cross-connect, test, patch and monitor capabilities for 16 T1 and two T3 circuits – again, all in just 1 EIA unit of rack space.
Key Features and Advantages Telect’s 1 RU multifunction panel provides many advantages, including the following: • Module selection: The 1 RU panel includes DSX-1, DSX-3, Ethernet and fiber optic module options. Within each of these are several options to fit the specifics of the application. For example, DSX-1 modules include wire-wrap configurations and RJ interface-based products. Fiber opticmodules range from patch only to combination patch and splice to further maximize space. For a complete list of module options, see the table on page 2.

Space Savings and Versatility Cell sites, huts, remotes and other limitedspace environments often require a significant deal of creativity when it comes to system design and deployment. Although the functionality required at the site is often complex, the available space typically is quite limited.

Multifunctional solutions such as Telect’s 1 RU modular panel enable versatility for equipment and capabilities that typically are given a low priority compared to the more costly active gear (routers, etc.) that drives network traffic through the site. This simple solution helps network designers make the most of valuable space, while at the same time addressing the connectivity requirements that most applications require.
