HOW TO ACCESS & DOWNLOAD eBooks from KDEC Library
You can: • carry them round in your pocket to read anywhere, anytime • write notes in them • check new words in the inbuilt dictionary • search – who was that character again? • make the print bigger • project the book onto a screen for shared reading, and they return themselves to the library ontime! eBooks do not replace print books but provide another format to engage young readers. We hope you and your students will enjoy the new way of reading.

Overdrive is the platform we have selected for ebooks. Read this guide to learn how to install the Overdrive app and download ebooks to read offline. Library and eLearning staff are here to help you through the steps to access ebooks on your tablet or phone.
How do students access ebooks? • Students can read ebooks on: • iPad or other tablets • smartphones • laptops or PCs Younger readers may need your help to install the app, borrow books, and download the books to their devices. Please see the instructions below. For help at anytime, contact the KDEC Library –

SET UP THE OVERDRIVE APP FOR EBOOKS Library, elearning staff and teachers will help you get set up

Borrow and read ebooks on your phone or tablet
• Go to Google Playstore, or Apple App store, or Chrome Web Store • Search for Overdrive • Download and install • Open
Borrow ebooks from the KDEC library using the Overdrive app
• Tap the top left corner of your screen

Enable E auto sync
• In the Overdrive home menu, go to Settings
(Optional - You need to have an Overdrive account and be signed in on all your devices – see step 2 above)
• Scroll down to General settings • Enable automatic syncing

INSTRUCTIONS • Tap the top left corner of your screen or swipe the screen (Apple and Android) • Go to Kelston Deaf Education Centre Library • Sign in with your KDEC library login: firstname.lastname (eg harry.potter) • Your password is KDEC or kdec , or use your own password if you changed it in the library catalogue already • Tick the box to remember your login

Find an ebook
INSTRUCTIONS • Swipe the screen up to see what is available • If the book icon on the cover is grey, someone else is reading the book. Click on the book cover to place a hold. You can place up to 3 holds. or • If the book icon on the cover is black, you can borrow the book Note: on phones, click on the heading New to collection to see the full title list.

Borrow an ebook
• Tap on the cover of the book you want to borrow • Tap on the Borrow button to borrow the book You can borrow up to 3 ebooks at one time.

DOWNLOAD AND READ OFFLINE VIA THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON THIS IS THE PREFERED METHOD TO DOWNLOAD EBOOKS. If there is NO BLACK DOWNLOAD button, go to step 11

• Tap or click the top left corner of the screen to go to the app home menu • Tap or click Bookshelf • To open the book, tap or click on the book cover • Tap or click Start reading at the bottom of the first page

• Tap or click on the middle of the screen The menu options show at the top of the screen • Use the slide controls to change the font size and colours • To close the menu and continue reading, tap or click the middle of the screen

Ebooks return themselves to the library when the loan expires. Return a book early so you can borrow another one • Connect to the internet • Tap the top left corner of the screen to go to the app home menu • Go to your bookshelf • Tap or click, and hold on the book cover • Return to library
Note: the options on an iPad or iPhone look slightly different but work the same way
IF THERE IS NO BLACK DOWNLOAD BUTTON, YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD FROM YOUR BROWSER TO READ OFFLINE.

The download is complete when circle turns solid red. This may take several minutes, depending on your internet connection. The downloaded copy will be available until the loan expires, even if you return the book early Note: If you borrow and return too many books in a short time your Overdrive account will be blocked

Add your ebook to your homescreen or bookmark it in your browser so you can find it again quickly
Select the Share at the top of the screen

Note: If you want to read the book offline, you need to download it. Choose Add to home, then Add

To bookmark the page, click the star icon at the end of the address bar

• Look for the ebook icon on your home screen • Tap on the icon to open the book and start reading again

Turn the pages
• Tap or click on the right hand side of the screen to go to the next page • Tap on the left hand side of the screen to go back
Get definitions, highlight and add notes
• Tap and hold on a word to get a definition from the dictionary or highlight the word. After you have highlighted a word, you have the option to add a note
Bookmark a page
• Tap the top right corner of your screen to add a book mark You can find your page bookmarks again in the book menu Your progress in the ebook, and the bookmarks and notes you add when you are offline will sync across all your devices next time you go online, if you are signed in to your Overdrive account on all your devices Note: your ebooks do NOT sync automatically across all your devices. You need to manually download each book to each device

INSTRUCTIONS • Tap the centre of the screen to find the menu Note: search is not available offline From the menu you can access: • the table of contents • bookmarks and notes you have added • Narration options if available • Tap the centre of the screen again to close the menu and continue reading • Enjoy!
