Built-in wide angle panel and white reflector card
Use the wide angle lens to spread the flash light over a wider angle or to reduce its direct intensity. Pull out the white reflector card with the flash head pointed up to create a more diffused light and a catchlight in a subject's eye for portrait shots. See “Creating a catchlight” on page 14.

AF-assist beam emitter
Projects a red light beam to help the camera focus in darker settings.

Optic slave sensor
Detects light from a camera’s built-in flash or other flash source to trigger the flash.

External power port
Plug an external high-power battery pack or other external power supply into this socket to supplement the flash’s internal batteries. Can also be used instead of the internal batteries.

Power port cover
Covers and protects the external power port.

Mounting foot
Connect to the camera’s hot shoe to mount and connect the flash on the camera.

Setting up your flash Installing the batteries Cautions • Using AA batteries other than Alkaline or NiMH may cause improper battery contact due to the irregular shape of the battery contacts. • If you change the batteries after firing many flashes continuously, be aware that the batteries might be hot. Notes • Make sure that all four batteries are the same brand and type. • When replacing the batteries, replace all four at one time. • Batteries are not included with this flash.

Open the battery compartment cover by pressing it with your thumb, sliding the compartment down, then lifting it open.
2 Insert four (4) AA batteries (not included). Make sure that the + and – match what is indicated in the compartment.

3 Close the battery compartment cover and slide it into place.
Attaching and removing the flash 1 Turn the camera and the flash off. 2 With the flash facing toward the front of the camera, slide the flash’s mounting foot all the way into the camera’s hot shoe.
3 Rotate the locking knob on the mounting foot until it’s tight. Do not overtighten.

4 Make sure that the camera and flash are turned off, then remove the flash from the camera by loosening the locking knob and sliding it off of the camera’s hot shoe.
Turning on the flash 1
Slide the power switch to ON. The flash begins charging. The flash zoom mechanism also resets. This generates some movement sounds and is normal. Note If the battery icon blinks on the LCD panel, the battery power is low and the flash stops charging. Change the batteries immediately.
2 When the flash-ready indicator turns red, the camera flash is fully charged and ready for firing. Note To test the flash, press the TEST button. Caution Do not look closely at the flash window or point it at someone’s eyes at close range.
Using Auto Power Off To save battery power, if the flash is not used for 90 seconds the power turns off automatically when attached to a camera, or mounted on its stand or a tripod. When the flash is in S1/S2 slave triggering mode, the flash enters sleep mode after 30 to 60 minutes (adjustable). To turn the flash on again, press the camera’s shutter button halfway, or press the flash’s TEST button. Caution When the power switch is set to ON and the flash power has automatically turned off, power is still being consumed. Long-term power discharge damages batteries, so make sure to slide the power switch to OFF if the flash will not be used for an extended period.

2 To focus the camera, press the shutter button halfway. The shutter speed and aperture is displayed in the camera viewfinder. Make sure that the icon is shown in the camera viewfinder.

Before the shot is recorded by the camera, the flash fires a pre-flash. This is immediately followed by the main flash. Note “TTL” is displayed on the LCD panel even if the camera is compatible with E-TTL.

Using E-TTL II autoflash in the shooting modes Set the camera’s shooting mode to Tv (shutter-priority AE), Av (aperture-priority AE), or M (manual) to use E-TTL II autoflash. Mode

Select this mode when you want to set the shutter speed manually. The camera automatically sets the aperture, matching the shutter speed, to obtain a standard exposure.
Av
Select this mode when you want to set the aperture manually. The camera automatically sets the shutter speed, matching the aperture, to obtain a standard exposure. If the background is dark (like a night scene), a slow sync speed is used to obtain a standard exposure of both the main subject and background. Standard exposure of the main subject is obtained with the flash, while a standard exposure of the background is obtained with a slow shutter speed. Note: Since a slow shutter speed is used for low-light scenes, use of a tripod is recommended.
M
Select this mode if you want to set both the shutter speed and aperture manually. Standard exposure of the main subject is obtained with the flash. The exposure of the background is obtained with the shutter speed and aperture combination you set.

Using the Flash Exposure Lock (FEL) The FE (flash exposure) lock locks the correct flash exposure setting into the flash for any part of the scene you select. 1
Set the flash to ETTL auto flash mode by pressing the MODE button repeatedly until “TTL” is displayed on the LCD panel, then focus on the subject. 2 Place the selected subject in the center of the viewfinder, then press the FEL button on the camera. If your camera does not have an FEL button, press the on the flash. The camera flash fires a preflash and the required flash * button output for the subject is retained in memory.
“FEL” is displayed in the camera’s viewfinder for 0.5 seconds. Each time you press the FEL button, a preflash is fired, a new flash exposure setting is locked into memory. Notes • If the TTL mode is not selected, the FE lock cannot be set. • If the subject is too small, the FE lock might not be very effective. • If the subject is too far away and underexposure is possible, the blinks in the camera’s viewfinder. Move closer to the subject and try the FE lock again.

Using the High-speed Sync By using the high-speed sync (FP flash), the flash can synchronize with all shutter speeds. This is convenient when you want to use aperture priority for fill-flash portraits. •
Press the / button repeatedly until the high-speed sync icon is displayed on the flash LCD panel, indicating that the high speed sync function is enabled on the flash.

Notes • Make sure that the icon is visible in the camera’s viewfinder. • If you set a shutter speed that is the same as or slower than the camera’s maximum flash sync speed, is not displayed in the viewfinder. • With high-speed sync, the faster the shutter speed, the shorter the effective flash range. • To return to normal flash, press the / button. The icon disappears. • Multi flash mode cannot be set in high-speed sync mode.

Using bounce flash By pointing the flash head toward a wall or ceiling, the flash bounces off of the surface before illuminating the subject. This can soften shadows behind the subject for a more natural-looking shot. This is called bounce flash. •

Notes • If the wall or ceiling is too far away, the bounced flash might be too weak and may result in underexposure. • The wall or ceiling should be a plain, white color for high reflectance. If the bounce surface is not white, the surface color may affect the picture.
Creating a catchlight With the white reflector card, you can create a catchlight (a light source that causes a specular highlight) in the subject’s eyes to add life to their facial expression. 1 Point the flash head upward 90°. 2 Pull out the wide angle panel on the front of the flash head. The white reflector card comes out at the same time.

3 Push the wide angle panel back in, leaving the white reflector card out.
4 Hold the flash head and turn it to the angle you want. Notes • Point the flash head straight ahead or upward by 90°. The catchlight does not appear in the subject’s eyes if you swing the flash head left or right. • For maximum catchlight effect, stay approximately 4.9 ft (1.5 m) away from the subject.
Using ZOOM to set the flash coverage The flash coverage can be set, automatically or manually, to match the lens focal length from 24 mm to 105 mm. Also, with the built-in wide angle panel, the flash coverage can be expanded for 14 mm wide-angle lenses. 1
Set your camera to manual zoom. (manual zoom) appears on the flash LCD panel. 2 Press the ZOOM button until the Zoom value blinks on the LCD panel. TTL 0.5 0.7

3 Press the - or + buttons to change the flash coverage. If the manual zoom is not turned on the flash coverage is set automatically. Notes • If you set the flash coverage manually, make sure that it covers the lens focal length so that the picture does not have a dark periphery. • If you use a commercially-available PC sync cord to connect the camera to the flash’s PC terminal, set the flash zoom manually. • If the LCD panel displays Zoom mm, the effective focal length cannot be shown. This means that the flash head failed to zoom and the ZOOM button does not work in this case.

Using the wide angle panel Use the wide angle panel to spread light over a wider angle or to reduct its intensity. 1
Pull out the wide angle panel on the front of the flash head. The white reflector card comes out at the same time.
2 Push the white reflector card back in, leaving the wide angle panel out. 3 Pivot the wide angle panel down over the flash head. The flash coverage is extended to 14 mm.
Notes • If you use bounce flash with the wide angel panel in place, the subject is illuminated by both the bounce flash and direct flash, which may look unnatural. • Pull out the wide angle panel gently. Using excessive force may detach the wide panel from the flash head. • The ZOOM button does not work with the wide angle panel in place.

Using manual flash (M) The flash output is adjustable from full power to 1/128th power in 1/3rd step increments. Use a hand-held flash meter to determine the required flash output to obtain a correct flash exposure when using manual flash. 1

Using stroboscopic (multi) flash Using stroboscopic flash, a rapid series of flashes is fired. This can be used to capture multiple images of a moving subject in a single photograph. You can set the firing frequency (number of flashes per second, expressed as Hz), the number of flashes, and the flash output. 1
Press the MODE button repeatedly until “Multi” is displayed on the LCD panel.

3 To set the multi-flash count (the number of flash actuations), press the - or + to select the number of flashes. 4 Press SET button. The next item to be set (the flash power level) starts blinking. 5 To set the flash power level, press the - or + to select the power level. 6 Press the SET button. You can select 1/4, 1/8,1/16,1/32,1/64, or 1/128.
Calculating the shutter speed During stroboscopic flash, the shutter remains open until the firing stops. Use the formula below to calculate the shutter speed and set it with the camera. Number of flashes / Firing frequency = Shutter speed For example, if the number of flashes is 10 and the firing frequency is 5 Hz, the shutter speed should be at least 2 seconds. Caution To avoid overheating and damaging the flash head, do not use stroboscopic flash more than 10 times in succession. After 10 times, allow the camera flash to rest for at least 15 min. If you try to use the stroboscopic flash mode more than 10 times in succession, the firing might stop automatically to protect the flash head. If this happens, allow the camera flash to rest for at least 15 min.

Notes • Stroboscopic flash is most effective with a highly reflective subject against a dark background. • Use of a tripod, a remote switch, and an external power source is recommended. • A flash output of 1/1 or 1/2 cannot be set for stroboscopic flash. • Stroboscopic flash can be used with bulb mode on the camera.

Notes • Second-curtain sync works well in the camera's “bulb” mode. • With E-TTL, two flashes are fired even at slow shutter speeds. The first flash is only the preflash, not a malfunction. • Stroboscopic flash cannot be set.
Using S1/S2 slave triggering mode This flash unit supports slave triggering mode. To enter S1/S2 mode from the main mode, press and hold the MODE button until S1 displays. If you are in S1 mode, press the MODE button to enter S2 mode. If you are in S2 mode, press the MODE button to return to master mode. S2 disappears from the LCD panel. The flash output setting in slave triggering mode is the same as that in manual mode. After pressing the SET button, the flash output blinks. Press the - button or + button to set a value. You can use your mini stand to set the flash away from the camera in S1 or S2 slave trigger mode. 1 Slide the flash hot shoe onto the mini stand. 2 Rotate the locking knob on the mounting foot until it’s tight. Do not overtighten. 3 Place the flash in the location you want.
S1 slave triggering mode In this mode, the flash unit functions as a slave flash for creating multiple lighting effects. It should be used in manual flash mode. In S1 mode, the flash unit fires at the same time as the master flash fires.

S2 slave triggering mode This mode is also called “Preflash Cancel.” In this mode, the flash unit ignores a single “preflash” from the master flash and only fires in response to the second, actual flash from the master. Therefore, this mode can be used when using a TTL master flash on the camera. Notes • Slave triggering modes are not supported: when “red-eye reduction” function is initiated by the master flash (either camera pop-up flash or external on-camera flash) and when the master flash uses the modeling flash function. • In either slave triggering mode the flash output level is only manually adjustable.

• When the flash is set as the master unit, the flash enters sleep mode after 90 seconds of inactivity. Press the shutter button halfway or press the TEST button to wake it up. • When the flash is set as the slave unit, the flash enters sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity. Press the TEST button to wake it up.
Auto zoom does not work
• Make sure the flash is not set to manual zoom mode. • Make sure the flash's mounting foot is securely connected to the camera's hot shoe. • If appears and blinks on the LCD panel, replace the batteries immediately.
The picture is underexposed or overexposed
• If there is a highly reflective object (such as glass or a mirror) in the picture, use the FE lock. • If you are using the high-speed sync, make sure that the subject is within the effective flash range displayed. • If you are using Manual Flash mode, set the flash to TTL or modify the flash output. Make sure that the flash exposure compensation is set to zero.
Photos have dark corners or only parts of the target subject are illuminated
• Check the flash coverage you set. This flash unit has flash coverage between 24 and 105 mm (lens focal length), which fits medium-format cameras. Pull the wide panel out to extend the flash coverage.
Make sure the flash's mounting foot is securely connected to the camera's hot shoe. Wait until the flash is fully charged and the flash ready indicator lights red. Make sure the electrical contacts on the mounting foot and hot shoe are clean. Make sure the camera's flash is turned on. If the flash ready indicator does not light, replace the batteries. If appears and blinks on the LCD panel, replace the batteries immediately. If the flash is used in slave mode, make sure that the master flash on the camera is turned on and active.

What does this warranty cover?
