IN THE MOMENT Football clubs are rich in diversity, with roles for many people of all ages and from all walks of life. From the classically qualified doctor to the canny knowledge of the boot steward, from the artistry of dancers to the spruiking skills of volunteers staffing the merchandise stand, the opportunities to be part of a club are endless. As this photo shows, it’s not just winning that counts; having fun along the way is an essential part of club lfe.

MATCH PREVIEWS
The split round has thrown up some interesting permutations, with last year’s top side and bottom side in a dogfight to score sorely needed points. Who could have predicted that when Sturt held the premiership trophy aloft at the end of season 2016?
Central v Norwood Stung by a narrow but unexpected loss to South, Norwood is expected to rebound with savage intent against the under-performing Bulldogs. Norwood’s playmakers were stifled by South under lights a week ago but that’s hard to see occurring again on My Money House Oval. Norwood will be focusing on its key messages for the year: intensity and tackle pressure, four quarter performances and better
use of the ball going into attack. Central took a lot out of its narrow loss to Glenelg and could easily have been coming into this game a narrow winner. Matthew Prior was a shining light, Trent Goodrem played a strong captain’s game and Nick Holman found plenty of the ball. It’s set up to be a gripping battle.
Eagles v Adelaide The Eagles sit atop the premiership table, despite having played one game less than second-placed Port. They come into this game having had a week off to freshen up and on its record to date, this is a flag-contending side that is settled and cohesive. Look to standout performances from the likes of Angus Poole, Jared Petrenko, Paul Stewart and Joseph Sinor, all of whom were outstanding in tricky conditions in the Anzac clash. On the flipside, Adelaide is
4
sanfl.com.au
playing in patches; sometimes brilliant but sometimes disappointing. Letting a three-goal quarter time lead slip into a six-goal loss had fans shaking their heads. Adelaide meets another top two side today and needs a four-quarter effort to claim the points. The first step will be to dominate the clearances, as occurred last week. Look for repeat efforts from speedster Jordan Gallucci, Hugh Greenwood in the midfield and Lachlan Murphy in defence.
South v North Revved up and ready to go! That’s the theme for both sides in this contest, as they come off last-start wins full of confidence. For South it was a gritty “underdog” victory against Norwood, while for North it was a hard-fought win against West. Both sides won the game in the last quarter, which could see this game go down to the wire. On form, South starts favourite and the side was clearly bolstered last
week with the return of gun midfielder Xavier Gotch after recovering from injury. North has only beaten cellar dweller West and struggling Central, but North on its day will be a tough proposition. Leigh Ryswyk, James Craig and Marlon Motlop stand in the way of back-to-back wins but when all is said and done, South also has a sizeable home ground advantage, which may tip the scales in its favour.
Port v Sturt Alberton Oval comes alive when the rampaging Magpies meet struggling Sturt in a game that could shape the second half of the season. If the Blues can beat the odds and serve up a loss to second-placed Port at Alberton, it will signal that better days are ahead. However, another loss will see last year’s premiers winless near the bottom of the league ladder … and all that entails. Sturt will be aiming to jump Port – based on that side’s slow starts – and then hold on, not letting the ‘Pies back into the game as the Crows did last week. The dangers to this will be wily Nathan Krakouer
who booted three in the second quarter and ended with a five-goal haul, combined with consistent goal demon Brett Eddy, who also finished with five goals. That brings Sturt’s defence into the frame. Byron Sumner looked good across half back, while Fraser Evans, Jack Stephens and Guy Page will be asked to stand tall once again. Sturt must also overcome the inaccuracy that cost it so dearly at its last start; seven points in the last quarter! Finally, Port has the added incentive of wanting to celebrate Steven Summerton’s 200th game with a win.

Eagles v Glenelg This is shaping up as the match of the round, as first plays third. Glenelg has never been out of the contest this year, coming from behind on several occasions to take the premiership points. Tigers coach Matt Lokan will need his heart checked soon if his side keeps chasing down deficits with minutes to go! After falling just short against South, the Tigers made amends with a thrilling five-point win against
Central, having to make up a 27-point shortfall deep into the last quarter. The Mileras – Ian and Terry – are on fire, while Bradley Agnew, Christian Howard and Aaron Joseph provide rebounding drive that the Eagles will need to shut down. Despite the excitement at the Bay, the Eagles are already being touted as premiership favourites. A win today will further enhance that claim.
Sturt v West At the time of writing, both Sturt and West are without wins this season – and the passage of a week is not expected to change that (but football is a fickle game and may prove us wrong!) Expect a hard-fought contest. West has shown great tenacity and “hung in” during games against superior opposition. The side’s problems start at clearances and it’s a
case of playing catch up from there. Bloods coach Mark Mickan is on the record as saying the side is inexperienced in many vital areas of match-play but by ‘hanging tough’, this West side gives itself a chance. On the other side of the ledger, Jack Osborn should give Sturt first use today and that should be enough to separate the two sides.

“BOYS FROM THE BUSH” (PART TWO) T
he country football grounds across this state have produced many wonderful football talents over the 140-years of SANFL football. In the second of this two-part feature, the SA Football Budget looks at Norwood, Glenelg, Sturt, South Adelaide, Port Adelaide and the Crows – heralding their past champions and current players who have a rural heritage. NORWOOD REDLEGS Past Players – Norwood’s triple premiership captain-coach from post World War II Jack Oatey: after being rejected by Port Adelaide, he successfully made the grade at The Parade, arriving from the Yorke Peninsula. Ruckman Bill Wedding came down to Norwood with his older brother Melville and developed into an All Australian (1961) champion and a 214-game player from the Willaston Donnybrooks. Likeable Lameroo lad Rodney Maynard followed his brother Brenton to The Parade, becoming a club best and fairest in 1989 in a 157-game career with the ‘Legs, along with the first Crow to play 50 AFL games, before returning to the bush and dominating in his local Mallee League. Current Crop – A versatile and athletic forward, who can ruck as well, Brady Dawe is from Hills club Meadows, while the trio of best and fairest players Ben Jefferies, Andrew Kirwan and Ed Smart are all mates and hail from the Onkaparinga Valley Football Brady Dawe. Sam Baulderstone was drafted to Norwood from Mount Compass in the Great Southern League, after impressing in the national country championships of 2012. He is originally from Central Whyalla, where he won a junior association best and fairest award. Alex and younger brother Tom Forster are originally from the South East club, Kybybolite, but moved to the city when Alex was in his mid-teens. From the Redlegs’ new country zone on the West Coast, Tom Charlton from Marble Range is a player to keep an eye on. Recruit Lewis Johnston started his football with the Ports Bulldogs in Port Pirie, before his football journey took him to Sydney, the Crows and now Coopers Stadium. 8

GLENELG TIGERS Past PlayersFather of Olympic Gold medal winning swimmer Emily Seebohm, John was an accomplished footballer who came to Brighton from Mount Burr, playing 319 games from 1978, including the back-to-back titles in the golden period of the Ben Mules. Bays’ history. Photo by Peter Argent. His premiership team mate Chris Duthy came down from South Broken Hill and completed a 201-game career with the Tigers, predominately at full back. Younger siblings of North Adelaide champion Barry, Alan and Wayne Stringer also travelled from Redhill, being key figures in the premiership era with Glenelg, after both started at Prospect. Another footballer to come to Adelaide from the Silver City was the enigmatic Neil Davies. He won a pair of best and fairest awards in the 1950s, in between going to the Northern Territory, and having success with St Mary’s in Darwin after a two-game stint with Richmond. Ben Mules returned to his home at Kalangadoo after an 11-year, 200-game career with Glenelg, where he was known as an inspirational leader. Current CropCaptain of the Bays, Andrew Bradley is a second generation player at Glenelg. His father, David, and Uncle Phil, both travelled up from Naracoorte to play. Andrew played his junior footy at the Kybybolite Tigers as well. Brad Agnew is from the Mt Burr Mosquitoes, before coming to town to complete his schooling at Sacred Heart. Both Indigenous siblings Terry and Ian Milera originally hail from the Far West Coast football community and the Koonibba Roosters, while mercurial new recruit Dom Barry is from the APY (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara) Lands and has also spent time in Alice Springs and a tennis scholarship in Ballarat. SOUTH ADELAIDE PANTHERS Past Players Back in 1934 at the age 24, Jack Cockburn joined South Adelaide from Blyth and developed into one of the most accomplished footballers of his generation, winning a Magarey Medal in 1935 and becoming a member to two Panthers’ flags during that Alf Skuse. epoch. Courtesy of Peter Argent. He also had brief stints with Essendon during the war and with VFA club Williamstown, before finishing with 151 games for the Panthers in ’47. Coming up from East Gambier, Phil Brooksby (the father of Gold Coast ruckman, Keegan) would become a stalwart for the Panthers in defence, playing 278 games between 1978 and 1989. His twin Graham would also play 125 games across
six years from 1979 and both were members of the Panthers’ last SANFL league Grand Final appearance (in Grahams’ initial season). Two great mates, a Gawler lad with express speed Alf Skuse and Graham Durbridge from the South East, were members of the Panthers’ Cinderella story of 1964, both being 100-plus game players in that era. Current CropJoseph Haines is the son of key defender from the late 1960s and early 70s, Peter. He started his football with Riverland club, the Waikerie Magpies. Team captain Bradley Crabb is one of the longest serving players in the SANFL, hailing from Kangaroo Island’s Western Districts Football Club. Impressive young forward Sam Overall comes from the Victor Harbor Football Club, while mature aged recruit Rigby Barnes and Ben Heaslip are Encounter Bay Eagles. Adam Hunter is a Mount Compass footballer, while ruckman Codey Ellison is from Reynella in the heart of the Southern Football League. A couple of up and comers to watch are Freeling teenager Dylan Whimpress and Cody Szust from the Bridgewater Raiders. STURT DOUBLE BLUES Past PlayersTwo of the club’s greats, both inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame, ER ‘Rick’ Davies and seven-time premiership player Paul Bagshaw MBE, have rural roots. Davies would travel from his home at Port Victoria on the Yorke Peninsula, catch up with 200-game dual premiership player Trevor Sims from Port Broughton at Port Wakefield; and from here, with North Adelaide’s Bronte Mumford, would go to training at their respective clubs on Thursday nights and games on Saturday. Davies will be forever famous for his best on ground 1976 Grand Final performance against Port Adelaide in a SANFL career that spanned 370 games (317 Sturt – 33 South – 20 state). Bagshaw, still the Double Blues’ longest serving player, was known as “Mister Magic” and would travel up from the family farm at McLaren Flat. Another seven-time premiership player from that golden era was Phil “Sandy” Nelson. From Loxton in the Riverland originally, before boarding at Scotch College, he is the father of 2002 premiership player, Ben. Current CropDebutant this year and highly credentialed draft candidate Mitch Crowden, from Meadows, is another of the many Hills footballers on SANFL lists. New recruit Sam Colquhoun, initially playing senior football with the Bulldogs, was an Angaston Panthers junior. A premiership centre half forward who came across to Unley from the Magpies, Kory Beard is a West Coast lad from the Lock Football Club. After playing his juniors and in a reserves premiership with the Eagles, Scott McMahon played his first SANFL league football with Sturt last year, which culminated with a flag. He is a CMS Crow from the Yorke Peninsula. Josh Hone is a Mount Lofty product, while Ben Hansen comes from the Tailem Bend Eagles and a player to keep an eye on, Aboriginal talent Dwayne Wilson, hails from the Murray Bridge Imperials. Skipper and dual Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood played junior football in Clare and Whyalla, as his father travelled in his job as a police officer.
PORT ADELAIDE MAGPIES Past PlayersThe most decorated footballer in SANFL history, four-time Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert, came to Port Adelaide from the Riverland. In a 392-game career with the Magpies, along with a season at North Melbourne and 29 state games, Ebert had an Russell Ebert. unrelenting attack on the ball. Photo by Peter Argent. His 1977 premiership teammate and 215-game wingman, Bruce Light, is also from the Riverland district. A Lincoln South footballer in his youth, Greg Phillips, enjoyed eight premierships in the prison bar jumper after coming across from the West Coast, along with playing 84 games in four seasons with Collingwood. Current Crop Of the Power rookies, indigenous talent and a key member of the 2016 Sturt title win, Jarrod Lienert is from the Murray Bridge Imperials, while Cameron Hewett is the youngest of the Hewett clan from the Broughton Mundoora Eagles. Tom Gray, like his older brother Sam, is from Rudall (now the amalgamated Eastern Rangers) on the West Coast. A number of the Magpies Academy players have rural roots, including Sam Roads from Ardrossan. ADELAIDE CROWS Past PlayersThe Adelaide Crows’ first premiership captain Mark Bickley and inaugural Brownlow Medallist Mark Ricciuto have a strong country heritage. Bickley, who started with South Adelaide and held the AFL premiership cup aloft twice in a 272-game career at West Lakes, came from the Port Pirie club, Solomontown. From the Waikerie Magpies, Ricciuto played in Adelaide’s premiership side in 1998, after missing out with injury the previous year. He won three Malcolm Blight medals, was an eight time All-Australian and the 2003 Brownlow Medallist, replacing Bickley as the club’s captain before the 2001 campaign. Like Ricciuto, the high flying superstar Tony Modra is a Riverland talent, becoming the first Crow to kick 100 goals in a season back in 1993. Current CropAll the development players on the Crows 2017 list are connected with a community club, with a number having rural connections. Matthew Johncock, the nephew of Graham, is a Mallee Park expatriate who is currently playing with Noarlunga. BLACK IN ONE EYE, WHITE IN THE OTHER

earing the number one jumper as the Port Adelaide Magpies captain for the past four years, Steve Summerton epitomises the traditions that are entrenched in the black and white culture at Alberton. He lives nine-time Port premiership coach Fos Williams’ creed in the modern game, not leaving the field of endeavour until he has totally committed his mind and body to the cause of a Magpies victory. In the changing face of the SANFL structure at Port, Summerton has been a constant, and in this round five Sunday clash at his football home, he joins the famed 200SANFL game club at the Magpies. “It is fair to say most of my wardrobe is black and white,” Summerton smiled. “There are three state jumpers in there now to add a bit of colour. “The Port Adelaide Football Club has been a huge part of my life. “In fairness I didn’t have much choice. Mum (Sue) and Dad (Lynn) are both dyed-in-the-wool Port Adelaide fans. “Back in the day, mum would sleep out at Adelaide Oval the night before Grand Finals to ensure she was at the games.” Before being a part of the underage programs at Alberton, Summerton played his junior football at North Haven and Port Districts, both clubs that wore black and white jumpers as well. Summerton’s debut at league level with the Magpies was in 2006, ironically against Sturt, but at Adelaide Oval. 10
sanfl.com.au
“I still have vivid recollections of that game and Corey Ah Chee giving me my first goal in league footy,” he recalled. “These days I still catch up with a few former team mates who are at other clubs, due to the changing structure at Alberton. “Guys like Zane Kirkwood and Kory Beard at Sturt, Matty Rose from South and North’s Jay Shannon are guys that I see regularly. “One the games that brings back special memories is that final match of the 2013 season, where we beat Glenelg and big Jimmy Meiklejohn kicked the winning goal. “For me, at the end of the day I’m still wearing black and white. “It was a personal goal of mine to play 200 games for the Magpies. “When I was a young, I would always joke to my parents, that I will be a 200-game Port Adelaide footballer.” In a career full of accolades, including the Powerade Rising Star award in 2007 and three Magpies best and fairest awards, there is one critical box Summerton needs to tick before retiring the ‘prison bar’ jumper. Captain of Port Adelaide in the 2014 SANFL Grand Final thriller where the Magpies fell agonisingly short of victory against Norwood, he desperately wants to add his name to the long list of Port Adelaide premiership players. Creative, skilful and clean with his hands, Summerton is a modern icon at Port Adelaide. Whether he achieves his final goal, only time will tell.

Torrens University Cup Torrens University U18 MVP - Round 4 Cooper Gaffney SANFL Club: Eagles Local Club: Port District Football Club Cooper is a member of the State U18 Academy and has had an outstanding start to the season finding plenty of the ball in the opening rounds. In what was a close and contested game, Cooper’s contribution to the Eagles performance was significant yet again. He finished with 23 disposals 13 kicks 10 handballs and 6 marks. The standout area of Cooper’s game however was his ability to apply immense pressure to the Double Blues which resulted in a game high 15 tackles. He played across half back & in the midfield and his game was outstanding in all areas of the ground. He is a very deserving recipient of the Round 4 Torrens University Cup MVP nomination.

STEWART AN EAGLE AGAIN AND ON A MISSION By Steve Barrett
W
hile the pain of back-to-back grand final defeats in 2015-16 still stings and serves as a driving force for Woodville-West Torrens this season, the anguish of a heart-breaking grand final defeat the year before is spurring on Paul Stewart. Norwood clung on to a gripping four-point victory over fastfinishing Port Adelaide in that epic 2014 decider. The final siren narrowly prevented any attempts to mark a monster last-ditch torpedo launched by Stewart into the Magpies’ forward 50. Back at the Eagles where his league journey commenced 11 years ago, Stewart is every bit as motivated as his teammates. “I played in the losing grand final the previous year, so I want another premiership as much as all the other guys,” he said. “It (2014) is still pretty raw for me.” Some things have changed, while others have remained the same at Oval Avenue since the fresh-faced teen with fake blonde hair made a meteoric rise to SANFL ranks in 2006. He made his debut in the Eagles’ preliminary final win over North Adelaide before stunningly claiming a flag a week later in a grand final trouncing of Central District, Stewart’s second league match. “Not too much has changed around here, apart from the fact the players all seem younger now as I’m pushing 30,” said Stewart, the last remaining link to that 2006 victory in which he dislocated his shoulder in the opening quarter. “There are a lot of familiar faces still around, older guys like Patty Giuffreda, Scott Lewis, Luke Thompson, (coach) Mick Godden is still there and Luke Powell is the footy manager now. “It’s a great feeling being back.” Primarily a fringe player across 101 games for the Power,

Stewart flipped regularly between Port’s AFL side and the Eagles’ SANFL line-up before being stationed permanently at Alberton following the introduction of AFL-aligned sides in 2014. “Every AFL game was special to me. None of them came easy,” said Stewart, who was snapped up by the Power with the 23rd pick of the 2006 national draft. That was the same draft that saw Travis Boak, Robbie Gray and Justin Westhoff arrive at Port. “It was always a waiting game for me because I was never a regular. “Going into my last year on 87 games, I thought there was no way I’d play one more, let alone get to 100. “To finally make it, with family there for my 100th and record a good win (the Power belted Brisbane by 94 points at the Gabba) is something I’ll never forget.” When Stewart’s AFL journey concluded at the end of last season, there was little doubt the veteran utility would return to the Eagles, where his wealth and diversity of experience will be invaluable for Godden. “I spoke to (Roosters coach) Josh Carr who I played with at Port and have had a good relationship with over the past 10 years,” said Stewart, who is a project manager for club sponsor Skill Hire’s community development program in the APY Lands. “I also spoke with Buddha (South Adelaide coach Garry Hocking), who I played for at Port. “But once I spoke with Godsy and Powelly, it was a bit of a no-brainer to come back here. “I’m keen to help out wherever I can.”
SANFL Reserves Report
Jake Wohling. Photo: Peter Argent The round starts when Central and Norwood face off. With just one win, Central appears to have its work cut out against third-placed Norwood, which comes off a comprehensive 75-point thumping of South. South v North offers the beleaguered Panthers the chance to open their winning account for 2017, yet it’s hard to see at this point. South’s nine scoring shots last week contrasts to their opposition’s 34, exposing the issues the side has across most lines. On the other hand, North fought well against the league leader, West, with Noa Crobett (four goals), Jake Wohling and Jordon Sweet putting in eye-catching performances. Despite the separation on the league table, it’s anyone’s game when Port comes up against traditional rival, Sturt. Port has incredible firepower when it gets going (don’t forget the impressive goal feast against Glenelg earlier this year, racking up 40 scoring shots to 13) and Sturt will need to shut this down early. Today’s two sides met in the final trial game before the start of the season, which saw Port register a 56-point win at Alberton. The Blues will need to make
better decisions under pressure if they are to avoid a similar fate today. Eagles v Glenelg is another close match up. Glenelg has shown they can win tough, as evidenced by its one-point cliffhanger win against Central, in a game that was close for most of the day. Lachlan Hosie contributed three valuable goals in that contest, while Todd Slade in defence is in great form. Yet the Eagles are setting themselves up for another tilt at the flag, coming back from a loss to record a 17-point win against Sturt, with talented William McPherson and Lachlan Smith featuring among the best. The round closes with Sturt and West doing battle. The Bloods haven’t put a foot wrong, while at the end of round four, Sturt had yet to register a win. The Blues lack consistency and have been paying for costly turnovers, but Dwayne Wilson is getting plenty of the ball and Tom Campbell has been strong in defence. Nevertheless, the firepower of Lachlan Peter and the impressive recent contributions from the likes of Jacob Carger and Lachlan Evans make a Sturt win unlikely.
