News from the Office… It’s hard to believe that we are entering into May. We look forward to the warmer weather ahead of us but also realize the sense of urgency students are feeling as they are deeply immersed in their courses in preparation for the next grade or the next stage in their lives. Academics at this time of year will incorporate a number of diverse learning opportunities such as field trips, athletic events and overnight trips to camp. Please keep an eye out for correspondence coming home from teachers which may include permission forms for upcoming excursions. A reminder to all grade 8-11 students that Senior High Student Council Elections will be taking place in May so be sure to listen to/read the announcements for more details on opportunities for you to participate in the democratic process and become a representative for your fellow students. Preparation for grad is well underway and in addition to finishing up final credits; grade 12 students will be completing scholarship applications, finalizing banquet attendees and exploring plans for the next year. Please see the website for more Grad 2017 news. Mr. Ilchena, Mrs. Blocker, Mr. Penner

WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS Social Justice News The Social Justice Committee has had an extremely busy and exciting month. April 12 was our Day of Pink as well as our Driving Dreams “FORD”ward fundraiser. Steeltown Ford in Selkirk brought out a Ford F-150, Escape and Focus to test drive. For every registered person, Ford donated $20 to a maximum of $6000 to our charity, The Dream Factory. We have partnered with the Dream Factory and are raising money to send Meinard Garcia (2 year old with cancer), and his family to the Philippines. The Garcia Family came to support the Ford Fundraiser and they were very humbled to have our school and the community support our efforts. Meinard was helping sell popcorn to the staff and students. Thank you to Tim Horton’s for donating coffee and cups and to Steeltown Ford for their generous community program. $2.00 tickets are still available for the entertainment/dining sports package draw. Prize value is over $2500. Please contact Mr. Kurt Bauschke or Mrs. Angie Chamberlin. To celebrate Canada’s 150, the construction of our “outdoor” classroom has begun. This will be a space for teachers’ to take their classes, experience the outdoors while delivering curricular outcomes. The design is based on the aboriginal healing circle and the seven teachings. TERRY PANISIAK, owner of Altymate Contracting Inc. provided his expertise, along with generously donating all the materials, equipment and his time to teach Mr. Kuzyk’s class the basics of concrete design. ABM Concrete in East Selkirk donated the concrete and limestone and McMunn and Yates donated the lawn edging. Thank you again to Terry Panisiak!

MIDDLE YEARS NEWS News from Room 6-45 Over the past few months, my classroom has evolved. The students, including me, have grown wiser and are more aware of the world around them. There is one thing that I am particularly proud of. My class, Room 6-45, has created a smallscale version of our home country, Canada. We had to do a lot of research to accurately represent the ten provinces and three territories that make up Canada. Over the span of two months, on every day 6, we created something beautiful and inspiring. Even Canadian Geographic Magazine thought it was cool! We called it the Canada Project. During that two month period, two of our students moved away. Two of our groups had to work harder without one person. Fortunately, all of the groups pulled through. The next thing we did was make a presentation showing the things we learned about our provinces/territories and what we built. It was fun watching the other groups present. The group's areas and topics were: The Yukon: The Gold Rush, Nunavut and Northwest Territories: Inuit Culture, The Maritimes: Cod Moratorium and Africville, Quebec: Bilingualism and Oka Crisis, Ontario: Modern Living, Manitoba and Saskatchewan: NWMP and Red River Resistance and last, but not least, British Columbia and Alberta: CPR and Chinese Labourers. Altogether, it was an awesome project. This is the news from 6-45! -Chloe Ashe
SENIOR YEARS NEWS Counsellor’s Corner TEN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! (Dr. Seuss, 1990) Brains in your head, feet in your shoes, and a diploma in hand may be good starts, but volunteerism offers you wonderful opportunities for professional development and personal growth. If you are looking for ways to enhance your life and career consider the following
benefits: 1. Volunteering offers incredible networking opportunities. Volunteering in your community allows you to meet new people, including community leaders. 2. Volunteering helps you retain and sharpen old skills. Sometimes job duties change and you may no longer be doing things you used to do, and liked. Volunteering is a perfect venue for keeping those skills sharp and current. 3. Volunteering is the perfect place to develop new skills. Employers are often seeking well-rounded individuals who have good teamwork and goal setting skills. Serving on a volunteer committee or board is a great way to learn group dynamics and teamwork. 4. Volunteering offers opportunities to practice skills in a relatively risk free environment. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is an excellent place to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. If offers you the opportunity build your self-confidence through practice. 5. Volunteering can help you expand your horizons and explore new career options. 6. Volunteering give you the satisfaction of knowing you are doing good and being involved in your community. 7. Volunteering gives you visibility. 8. Volunteering can be energizing/renewing. Sometimes we simply need a break in our routine, or an opportunity to create a balance in our lives. Volunteering around a personal interest or hobby can be fun, relaxing and energizing. That energy and sense of fulfillment can carry over to a work situation and sometimes helps to relieve work tensions and foster new perspectives for old situations. 9. Volunteering can create leaders. By watching those around you, you can begin to identify the qualities of leadership that you most admire and you can develop those qualities in yourself. 10. Volunteering demonstrates workplace skills/management skills/customer service skills/leadership skills that can be documented in
a resume. Life is a wonderful journey and you never know where it will take you. Volunteering can help you be more than a passive traveler. You can make a plan and actively build skills to enhance your professional lives. No fees and no tuition. A commitment of time and energy and you are on your way.
