Introduction
EMC SMI-S Agent ETL for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Version 4.1.00
Release Notes v4.1.00 What's New The ETL now provides support for WQL query in WBEM client based on SBLIM method. The parameters collection can now be performed at different rates to maintain a suitable refresh rate of the parameters and scale large environments. The following specific polling cycles per devices have been implemented: o Storage Systems, Controllers and Ports are collected at every run o Storage Pools and Disks are collected once per hour o Volumes (and Host information) parameters are collected once per day
Changes and Improvements Code robustness has been improved. Object discovery is performed once per day instead of once per hour to improve the monitoring performance on large environments. The mechanism that handles the parsing of WBEM queries has been improved to reduce the consumption of CPU and memory resources. The service activity trace in service log files (also displayed in the log screen of the ETL tasks section) has been improved. The service loading is now logged in a serviceLoading.log dedicated file. The discovery or the collect of metrics is automatically interrupted when the time dedicated to these processes exceeds 3 times the configured service’s period. Back End Fiber Ports (FC Ports) are no longer discovered: the collected information from the Back End Fiber Ports were not representative of the real data traffic of the disk array. The SQLite store was replaced by a binary files store to avoid performance issues. New computation methods for Symmetrix storage systems: o The ST_AVAILABLE_FOR_STORAGE_POOLS metric exposes the available capacity for Storage Pools or for Traditional Volumes creation. o The ST_AVAILABLE_IN_STORAGE_POOLS metric exposes the available capacity in Storage Pools. o The ST_CAPACITY metric of the storage systems is now the sum of the ST_AVAILABLE_FOR_STORAGE_POOLS metric and the sum of Storage Pools and Traditional Volume capacities. The error message displayed when querying an SMI-S provider that doesn't support the EMC namespace has been improved to be more explicit.

Fixed Issues An error occurred when populating Run History on BCO 9.5.01 or higher. The NullPointerException does not occur anymore when discovering Disk Groups. Relations between Volumes and Storage Pools were missing in the BCO workspace. The value of the ST_SYSTEM_IO_RATE metric is now null when the total number of operations per second performed by the system could not be computed. The ST_POOL_SUBSCRIBED_CAPACITY metric for storage pools was not properly calculated when FAST policies were enabled in EMC Symmetrix/VMAX.

Customizing Volumes Monitoring Discovering volumes and collecting their performance metrics are resource-intensive actions that can create extra workload on the system. To reduce the system resource consumption, administrators can disable or enable the volumes monitoring at will and fine-tune the creation of volume entities into the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization environment
Disabling volumes monitoring Disabling the monitoring of volumes suspends the discovery of all volumes until the volumes monitoring is re-enabled. Thus, volumes capacity and performance metrics are not collected. While the system resource consumption is therefore significantly reduced, valuable metrics are no longer displayed in the console. Additionally, when data is no longer collected, the calculation of other sources metrics may be impacted (refer to the Fine-tuning entities management section for detailed information). To disable the monitoring of volumes: 1. Edit the EMC SMI-S Agent ETL for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Run Configuration. 2. Expand the ETL additional settings menu.
Disabling V olumes Monitoring
3. From the Disable Volumes Monitoring pull-down list, select Yes. 4. Click Save. The table below lists the datasets and their respective metrics that are no longer collected and therefore not displayed in the console when the volumes monitoring is disabled: Dataset

Fine-tuning entities management ETL Services manage data in two successive phases: the collect and the loading. Administrators can combine these tasks in order to adapt the amount of data to process with the workload that their system can handle. This typically depends on the database capacity and the server performance. Volumes Monitoring

All volumes are discovered and their metrics are collected and processed. Volumes-related metrics are not loaded in the console.
Use this configuration if you w ish to collect and process volume-related metrics w ithout loading this information in the console. The collected data w ill how ever be used to calculate metrics for other sources, w hen required. This w ill reduce the resource consumption of your system. Yes (disabled)
N/A
Volumes are not discovered. Volumes-related metrics are not loaded in the console.
Use this configuration if the number of volumes to manage significantly slow s dow n the system performance. Disabling the volumes monitoring prevents the discovery of any volumes and consequently do not allow the ETL to collect, save or process their data. Note that the calculation of metrics for other sources may be impacted (see reference guide).
