October 2012 Vol. 26, No. 3 EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. Lincoln Plant Celebrates Building Bridges Graduates with Visit from Husker Basketball Coach On August 2, 2012 the Lincoln plant honored more than 80 graduates of our Building Bridges Leadership Development Program. The event included a luncheon and speech by the new Nebraska Basketball Coach Tim Miles. The Building Bridges program consists of five 10 week modules. Four classes have completed the program to date with each class comprised of supervisors, general foremen and assistant managers from all of the different departments and cost centers in the plant. While the technical knowledge and skill of our people is unmatched, this course is designed to develop well-rounded leaders by addressing the soft skills that are crucial to being an effective leader. The 5th module deals with KMM specific information. The modules are: • Module 1: Self-Awareness • Module 2: Communication • Module 3: Maintaining Productivity • Module 4: Understanding Your Role as a Supervisor • Module 5: Kawasaki Policies, Procedures and Programs Coach Miles spoke about team building, the importance of developing an edge (or advantage), performing at the highest level every day, and finishing with a flourish. He stressed that how well a team responds to adversity plays a large role in that team’s success. While the coach’s entire speech related to the challenges we face every day, one statement in particular rang true…”Put the process first; the results will follow.” During his speech, the coach told the story of his first experience with Kawasaki. As a young boy he and his friends would Mr. Asano, Coach Tim Miles and Mike Boyle. work on and ride mini bikes. He fancied himself as a pretty accomplished rider until the day one of his friends offered to let him take his Kawasaki 125 for a spin. The 125 was quite a bit more powerful than the mini bikes he was used to, so when he hit the throttle, the bike went one way; he went the other. His friend immediately rushed to the aid of the Kawi…of course. Coach Miles didn’t say whether he got a second chance with the 125, but he did seem to have his eye on a few of the units in the Product Display Room. A group of leaders from the 3rd shift completed the course in mid September and groups 6 and 7 begin their Building Bridges journey this fall. (See more photos on Page 2.) The annual event was organized by the Ashland Junior Woman’s Club and featured youth from the community as well as entertainment provided by First Position Dance Studio. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln Husker Motor Sports club came to Kawasaki to ask for help with their upcoming Formula SAE competition. The event is a one of many design competitions put on by SAE International. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving. Kawasaki was able to provide support in a variety of ways. First, the team members were brought in the plant for tours of our fabrication and assembly areas. The tours were followed up with a question and answer period with R&D and production engineers. Second, key members of the chassis group were brought into the plant for weld training. Four of the students completed the same weld training used for the production welders. Finally, Kawasaki was able to donate items for the team. The excess inventory held in the old R&D office was sorted and items of value were given to the team. 12 custom rims were made in the wheel area. The big donation was a new 2009 ZX6R which was purchased from Star City Motor sports and donated to the team. The official competition was held in Lincoln Airpark last June. Kawasaki was a visible presence there also. We donated our Mule vehicles to assist the event preparation. Kawasaki volunteers were used to assist during setup and tear down by driving vehicles. During the event twelve employee volunteers helped judge the various events of the competition over three days. The University of Nebraska team placed 50 out 65 teams at the event. They had a mechanical failure which prevented them from competing in 3 of the 6 events. Kawasaki plans on helping them to improve their performance in next year’s event. Thanks to all the Kawasaki employees who volunteered their time helping out last year. Arnie Higgins was awarded EMT of the year. Arnie is an EMT provider and an EMS instructor. Congratulations Arnie. Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. Our new program year with Viverae began in October. You will have from Oct.1, 2012 until Sept. 30, 2013 to accumulate 200 points to qualify for the 2014 Wellness Reward. Employees can accumulate points by doing the first two requirements: Biometric Screening and the Member Health Assessment (MHA). You may do the Biometric Screening here onsite or at a lab or doctor of your choosing. The requirements of the screening are: HDL, LDL, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose, Height, Weight, Waist Circumference, and Blood Pressure. All of these measurements will be done here at Kawasaki Lincoln’s onsite Biometric Screenings. If you go off site, you must provide ALL of the values listed above to be considered complete. The MHA is a survey that you can complete on the Viverae website or by calling 1-888-VIVERAE (848-3723). This survey consists of various questions regarding your personal health (ex. How many servings of fruit do you eat per day?). By answering these questions, along with the data from your Biometric Screening, Viverae can give you a health score and give you feedback on all the great lifestyle choices you are making, or the ones you could improve. All information sent to Viverae is confidential and is for your viewing purposes only. After completing the Biometric Screening and MHA, you will receive 100 points. You then have until Sept. 30, 2013 to acquire the remaining 100 points. This is the 5th year KMM has been a sponsor of the “Art of the Car” classic automobile and motorcycle show in Kansas City. This year’s show was June 24th at the Kansas City Art Institute Campus. The “Art of the Car” is a by invitation only show of unique, rare or interesting cars and bikes from the 1900’s up to the early 70’s, both foreign and domestic. They include vehicles that are not normally seen outside of shows such as Pebble Beach or Amelia Island. This year’s show included Allard, Cord, Duesenberg and Stutz; there were 212 vehicles in all. As well as sponsoring the show we also provided and presented an awards trophy for the “Motorcycle We’d Choose to Build”. This trophy was designed and fabricated by KMM employees on production equipment. This year’s winner was Dale Keesecker with his 1977 MV Agusta 850SS motorcycle, a concours example of a rare Italian race bike. Next year’s show will be June 23rd, I encourage anyone interested in classic cars and bikes to attend. The show is open to the public. 5 Lincoln Plant News NEW HIRES William Henry Coordinator, Wellness Dexter Spitsnogle Engineer, Production Tuan Tran Welder Kyle Creeach Maintenance E Trevis Gale Purchasing Agent - Rail Carolyn McConnell Coordinator, Acctg. - Rail Danelle Benker Administrator, Payroll Stephen Stephens Engineer, Quality - Rail Ryan Foss Welder - Rail Matthew Davis Welder - Rail Zakery McCaslin Welder - Rail Amanda Wells Administrator, Payroll - Rail Employee Open House Timothy Stewart Welder - Rail On August 4th, Kawasaki held an open house for all Kawasaki and contract employees. This is not a fool proof way to guarantee they are legit, but it can help eliminate the majority of the bogus ones easily. In the image below two areas are highlighted, the red box is the link in the email that the scammers want you to click. If you move your mouse over this link (do not click it, just hover over it), then look down below in the status bar, you will see a URL like the one below I have highlighted with a green box. The URL in the green box represents the website you will be sent to if you click the link. If the URL does not match the URL in the body of the email (like in the example below) you know it is most likely a scam, so just delete the email. Now if the spot you would click on is not a URL like in the example above, you need to use judgment as to whether or not the site you will be sent to is legitimate or not. Now I do want to mention that while this technique does work here at KMM with Lotus Notes, it may not work for you at home as not all email clients display the URL in the status bar like Lotus Notes does. It is always best practice to be a defensive browser, what I mean by that is just like it is good to be a defensive driver on the road and be on the lookout for hazards, the same holds true for email. Breast Cancer Awareness by Carolyn Coy In October of 2011, there were several postings around KMM that St. Francis Hospital was offering extended hours mammogram services. Being 36 years old with no family history of Breast Cancer, I wasn’t worried about myself. However, I spoke with our Company Nurse, Kelly DeMott, about scheduling an appointment for my mother who has never had a mammogram. The night before my mother’s appointment, I called to remind her, but I could tell in her voice she was nervous and she admitted she wasn’t ready. So I decided to take her place that day and later, planned on telling her how easy it was and so on. But instead, two days later on November 11, 2011, I was diagnosed with Stage one Breast Cancer. For the following eight months, I was given eight rounds of chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation. My doctors are confident that my cancer was removed and consider me to be cancer free! I am still seeing my doctor every three months and perform monthly breast self-exams. I strongly feel if I hadn’t had a mammogram that day, my story would be very different. Early detection made the difference. So please ladies, schedule your mammogram soon! Open Enrollment Week of 11/12/12 When you receive emails that contain links in them, it is best practice to always be on the defensive and NOT click the link. If for example the email says it came from “Wells Fargo” and you bank at “Union Bank”, then just delete it instantly, if you do bank at “Wells Fargo”, still don’t click the link, just open your Internet browser of choice and use a favorite (if you have one) or manually type the address to go to www.wellsfargo.com. Then login and check your account. 8 All enrollment, cancellations and changes to the following benefits can be made during the week of November 12, 2012. Please bring Social Security numbers, addresses, and dates of birth of dependents that you wish to add or delete from any of the following benefits. • Health Benefits • Flexible Spending • Additional Life Insurance • Additional AD & D Insurance • AFLAC Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. Maryville Plant News WE ROCK by Todd Turner, Environmental Specialist KMM Maryville has just completed our waste water aeration station. This 80,000 gallon structure is helping Kawasaki meet compliance with the City of Maryville’s Industrial user waste water permit. The system works by taking Kawasaki’s waste water and gathers it in the tank. While the water is in the tank electrical motors turn propeller type fans submerged in the water, this injects more air into the waste water making it better and easier treatable water. This will lower our TSS (total suspended solids) and BOD’s (biological oxygen demand) thus making the water we send back to the city much cleaner than required. This is just a small part of Kawasaki being a good steward towards our environment. Employees Use Friday’s Off to Help Co-worker On May 11th, KMM employee JoAnn Townsend lost her husband, Phil, unexpectedly. Dealing with loss can be overwhelming and the last thing someone thinks about is home repairs. But like so many homes in Maryville, the Townsend home received a lot of damage from the August 2011 storm and had not yet been repaired. To help ease the burden of her loss, Scott McGinness mentioned to several employees about repairing JoAnn’s home. Not only did they volunteer without hesitation, they were looking forward to helping out a good cause. Kawasaki has a diverse workforce with a lot of skilled employees coming from different jobs before working at Kawasaki. Sixteen Kawasaki employees or spouses of employees along with JoAnn’s family started this project on Friday, August 3rd and finished Saturday, August 4th. After 240 combined labor hours, the job was 99% complete in just 2 days. The shingles and roof deck were replaced, 3 doors replaced and all the siding and trim were replaced. The hard work and teamwork that took place says a lot about these guys and Kawasaki’s workforce. JoAnn has been employed at Kawasaki for 23 years and is currently our Service Supervisor. A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers that helped out. A Note from JoAnn… WOW, where do I begin! We are a very special family at Kawasaki and as you can see by the picture, there were several that came and helped with the transformation. Many other Kawasaki members told me they would have helped if they had known. I had to remind them, our house is just a small ranch style house! Even though some days are really tough, when you lose that special person in your life, your children and grandchild’s lives, with friends, family and the Good Lord, the strength is there when you need it. From the bottom of my heart, Mindy and Josh, Chad, Cadence and Kelby, we owe our heartfelt thanks to so many – my family, Phil’s family, the Kawasaki family and the community – for all the support they have shown us. Phil was truly a wonderful fellow and we are thankful for the 39 years we had with him. Phil is with us in our hearts and watching us from heaven and having that smile on his face that we all remember. — JoAnn    Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. 9 Maryville Plant News Welcome Mr. Masahiro Nonaka joined KMM-Maryville Plant on June 1, 2012 as an Engineer for the Research and Development Department. This project will be completed in several phases. The first phase a full Complete Knock Down (CKD) will begin in April 2013 with KHI supplying all parts with KMM starting the Assembly process. The second phase will begin at the end of 2013 with Assembly using KMM machined components, preparations have already started with Production Engineering getting machining lines ready to machine the major components. The third phase which is also currently underway by KMM Purchasing department, is the procurement of some of the raw materials along with other FD engine components. Currently, KMM Production Engineering Assembly Group is working at converting Assembly Line #1 for the assembly of the FD engine models. Assembly Line #1 was one of our ATV engine assembly lines, however, with the transfer of ATV engine assembly returning to KHI, this line has now become available for reuse. Production Engineering is planning on adding several pokayoke systems to ensure correct and proper assembly for these FD FD620D engines. Production Engineering along with Maintenance and Production will be working Liquid-Cooled V-twin 4-cycle Horizontal together to get this line re-configured and ready for the CKD phase to start by April 2013. Shaft OHV Gasoline Engine During the first half of this year, KMM Production Engineering Machining Group has been preparing to machine the major engine components here. There are no plans to introduce any new machining lines for this project, so this will require KMM to utilize our existing machining lines. The major engine components that will be machined at KMM, are the aluminum components Cover Crankcase, Crankcase, and Cylinder Heads; then the steel/iron components of the Camshaft, Crankshaft, and Flywheels. These components will be introduced onto the various machining lines in staggered intervals beginning in October 2012 and finish by the end of May 2013. Testing of KMM machined components needs to be completed by KHI in the summer of 2013, so approval of phase 2 can be completed and then started at the end of 2013. The Four Secrets of Weight Loss Losing weight is one thing, but keeping it off is the true challenge. That’s why researchers from Brown Medical School and the University of Colorado started a database called the National Weight Control Registry, which tracks more than 5,000 people who have lost an average of 66 lbs. and kept it off for more than five years, without gastric bypass surgery. Through communicating with this group of successful weight-loss losers, they’ve identified four things people who keep the weight off have in common: 1. EAT BREAKFAST – 68% fit it in daily. Other research has shown that people who regularly skip breakfast are statistically 4.5 times more likely to be overweight, and people who eat breakfast tend to eat fewer calories all day. And it just makes sense with how our bodies work. We tend to be more active during the day and meals and snack are meant to fuel the hours after the meal. Other words, when you eat the bulk of your food in the evening when your activity level is low, you don’t need all that fuel, and you can’t retroactively burn it, which means the surplus gets sent straight to your fat cells. 2. WEIGHING IN – 75% of this group weigh themselves at least once a week. Some research shows that daily weighing can be beneficial for long-term weight control, but it’s important to know that it’s normal for your body weight to fluctuate from day to day or hour to hour. For example, if you have a meal that’s saltier than usual you’ll retain more water, which can cause your weight to creep up until your body can flush out the excess sodium and fluid (16 oz. of water weighs one pound). But weekly weighins can give you a sense of your body’s usual pattern, and that’s important because if you see a change from what’s typical, you can make the connection about what’s happening and address it right away. You may realize you’re eating out more often, or not paying attention to portion sizes. That kind of detection system may be an important key to keeping weight off. If you don’t like weighing yourself because you get too caught up in the numbers, choose a pair of pants or jeans to serve as your measuring stick. “If they start to feel too tight, take a closer look at your habits.” 3. TURN OFF THE TV – 62% watch less than 10 hours of TV per week. This is a big one. We tend to burn fewer calories while in the “TV trance”, than we do reading or sleeping. And of course there are numerous ads for food, which is probably why studies show that people eat between 30 and 70% more while watching TV. Instead, try to do something active, even if it is folding laundry or ironing. 4. EXERCISE – 90% of this group exercises on average about one hour per day. That sounds like a lot, especially because according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 60% of American adults are not regularly active, and 25 % aren’t active at all. But that 60 minutes does not have to be at once. It can be 15 minutes before work, 15 minutes carved out of your lunch break and 30 minutes in the evening after dinner. And it doesn’t have to involve going to the gym. It can be walking, riding a bike or even dancing. Source: Josephine Magazine 13 Maryville Plant News Military Provides Great Employees KMM enjoys having many workers on staff with military experience and training. Here are some insights from just a few: Rick Frese is an Assembly Team Member and also a Headquarters Battery Commander for the Missouri Army National Guard. He chose Kawasaki for employment because “Kawasaki has advancement opportunities for the skills that I have gained through the military, and Kawasaki values are very similar to Army values.” Adam and Maggie Marriott Adam Marriott was a U.S. Navy Builder for 8 years and now works as a Quality Control Technician. What he likes most about this position is “being challenged daily to improve product quality and overall brand image.” Dennis Losee is a Supervisor in Production Planning after 20 years in the U.S. Army as a Chief Warrant Officer and helicopter pilot. “The perseverance for excellence in our products and keeping the Kawasaki name admirable,” is what he likes most about Kawasaki. Todd and Sonya Turner Junior Accomplishments In July, Andrew Hanshaw, the 12 year old son of Jason and Stacy Hanshaw competed in the Taylor County 4-H Horse Show, earning the title of Junior Overall Grand Champion. Andrew competed in a total of 10 events, placing in each of them. The classes are split into what is called Pleasure Classes and Speed Events. Together, he and his horse, Twister, a 4 year old Quarter Horse Bay Gelding, earned a purple ribbon in the Halter Gelding class, Grand Champion in Junior Showmanship, Reserve Grand Champion in Junior Western Pleasure class, a red ribbon in Junior Horsemanship, a blue ribbon in the Junior Trail Class, and a red ribbon in the Junior Western Riding class. In the Speed Events, Andrew and Twister earned blue ribbons in Barrels, Pole Bending and the Keyhole Race and Reserve Grand Champion in the Junior Flag Race. Todd Turner, KMM’s Environmental Specialist, experienced 21 years in the U.S. Marine Corp and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. He commented, “Kawasaki has been very supportive and accommodating. The discipline, values, and skills that I developed during my years in the military are beneficial to my employment here.” We thank you all for your service: here and there! 14 Andrew Hanshaw and Twister Andrew joined 4-H when he was in 4th grade, doing projects in woodworking and mechanics. The following summer, when Andrew was 10, he was offered a job of riding horses for a local breeder and trainer. It was then Andrew’s talents with horses became visible. He rode several different horses that summer, one of the last being Twister. He decided to try his luck in October of 2010 in the Taylor County 4-H Fun Show. Luckily, Twister had not been bought and was available for Andrew to use in the Fun Show. At the time, Twister was a 2 year old. Soon after that show, Twister became Andrew’s horse. Over the last couple of years, Andrew and Twister have become best buds. They have been to horse camps, competed in shows and have rode many miles together. Andrew and Twister have worked hard to become a team and really enjoy each other. Andrew is in 7th grade this year and is active in football, basketball, baseball, band and in his 4-H club. He competed in the Taylor County 4-H Fun Show on Sunday, October 7. Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A.
