Make sure the source device is correct and workable. To guarantee data consistency, we highly recommend the capacity of source and targets should be the same. Never turn off the power while processing the firmware update. Use only approved power sources. The product is only suitable for operation in dry, dust free, clean environment. Do not allow liquids or foreign objects to enter. Failure to do so may severely damage your duplicator. 5 1 Introduction Product Overview This is a bulky and amazing easy expandable HDD/SSD Duplicator. When a KV500 was hook up with any other unit of KV500 or KV600, it will immediately become a machine with larger target ports. For example, when a KV500, a 4-target duplicator, link with a KV600 (6-target-port), within seconds, it become a 10 targets HDD duplicator. No need of any setup or software install, just so simple and easy. This HDD duplicator, KV series, is a high-end industrial standard hard disk duplicator that makes HDD duplication fast and easy. There is no computer or additional software required. Support high data transfer speed up to 8.1GB/min, and it takes one minute to copy around 8.1GB content. The three different copy modes (System and Files, All Partition and Whole HDD) can satisfy various needs of duplication 6 Introduction 1 Features Flexibility to expand target without slowing down speed Just a simple hookup to link each single unit together to easily expand the machine targets Rack Mount Enclosure Design Firm for use. Auto Power Control System Protect the HDD from damage during removal from the duplicator. Quick Copy Mode This mode can identify the HDD formats of FAT, NTFS, Mac(HFS, HFX, HFS +) and Linux. It will only copy the data and system contained area, which can highly enhance the copying efficiency. Support Multi-Interface Duplicator supports 2.5"/3.5" SATA interface directly and support CRU interface via adaptor. Four Erase Methods Quick Erase, Full Erase, DoD Erase, and Secure Erase. Utility 5.2 Update System 5.2.2 Create Update HDD To format the HDD with a 2GB FAT partition in order to quickly save firmware in the HDD. 5.3 System Info. This function will show information of the duplicator system, including controller model number and software version. 6.1 Start-up Menu Select which function is shown first when the system is turned on. 6.1.1 System and Files Set to copy source HDD's data area only. 6.2 Copy Area Setup copy mode. 6. Log Manager 7.1 Advanced (For advanced series Function only) 7.1.1 Clear ALL Log Clean out the log records after entering password. 7.1.2 Setup Password Set up the password for cleaning log records. 11 3 Reminder Reminder ⌘ Before You Start ☉☉ Make sure to use stable power supply. ☉☉ Please use at clean & dry environment. ☉☉ Make sure to use stable power supply. ☉☉ Please keep the environment well ventilated. ☉☉ When the duplicator operates, it is normal for the machine to heat up. ☉☉ Please do not move the duplicator during operation to ensure better operation. ☉☉ Please do not remove HDDs during operation to avoid damage. ☉☉ Please use power supply of its original manufacturer to ensure working normal. ☉☉ Eliminate Static electricity: Static electricity may cause duplication error. Please pay attention to the duplicator environment and operators’ equipment. It is recommended to purchase static electricity elimination equipments to avoid static electricity shock when stay in high static electricity. 12 How to Copy HDDs How to Copy HDDs 4 ⌘ Start to Copy Step 1 Prepare a source HDD and target HDD (*it's strongly recommended to the size of source and target are the same) Source HDD Target HDD Note ☉☉SATA interface applies on the duplicator, no matter SATA 1.0/2.0/3.0 are all supported. ☉☉Assemble adaptors if user needs to copy device with other interface, e.g., eSATA and iVDR. Step 2 Place source HDD at source port, targets HDD to other ports. 13 4 How to Copy HDDs Step 3 Use ▲▼ to select "1. Copy" then press "OK". Duplication will proceed. Note When all the target HDD ports are plugged, duplicator would start copying automatically. If not all are plugged, the number of targets shows on LCD. Press "OK" to start. The information below shows on LCD during duplication. Note ☉☉The number shows in the ( ) is the port # of the slowest HDD. ☉☉Press ▲▼ together for 5 seconds to stop operation on the slowest HDD. ☉☉It is able to use "On-Time Monitor" feature to check operation speed of every port. Step 4 Quantity of copy OK/Fail and duplication time would show on LCD after duplication completes. ⌘ Setup before Copy/Compare Please pay attention to the following settings before copy. ❶ Set Copy Area of Source HDD Choose appropriate copy area can greatly reduce operation time and have better efficiency. There are four copy modes with different copy area : ① System and Files, ② All available partition area, ③ Whole HDD, ④ User set the percentage range of HDD. 14 How to Copy HDDs 4 System and Files (Quick Copy, Quick Compare) It will copy source HDD's System and Files instead of the whole HDD. The system will analyze the source HDD and identify the data area to copy. As long as the source HDD's data within the target HDD's space, the copy will be processed. FAT16/32/64, NTFS, ext2/3/4, HFS+, HFS, HFX are supported for this copy mode. Source Duplication Target Partition 1(150G) Data 30G Partition 1(200G) Data 90G 500GB 500GB Only 120G data area will be copied, it takes 12mintues. All Partition This mode will bit by bit copy all of the partitions no matter there is data exist or not. The capacity of target HDD has to be bigger than the partition required capacity Source Duplication Target Partition 1(150G) Data 30G Partition 1(200G) Data 90G 500GB 500GB Only 350G partition area will be copied, it takes 48mintues. 15 4 How to Copy HDDs Whole HDD It is to copy the whole source HDD, no matter of the content, format, partition or empty space. This mode will take much more time to duplicate the source HDD completely. Duplication Source Target Partition 1(150G) Data 30G Partition 1(200G) Data 90G 500GB 500GB Entire 500GB HDD will be copied. Percentage(%) Copy the percentage selected of source HDD. Source Duplication Target 25% 25% 32% 32% 500GB Only copy the selected area, other area or data will not be copied. Note Duplication time is affected by "transfer speed of HDD". 16 How to Copy HDDs 4 Copy area selection: e.g. There are two partitions in one 500GB HDD. Data and OS(120GB) are saved in the partition. System and files All partition 500GB Copy/Compare area 30G+90G= 120G Whole HDD 500GB Copy/Compare area 150G+200G= 350G 500GB Copy/Compare area 500G Note ☉☉It is recommended to execute "Compare" after "Copy" to confirm the accuracy. ☉☉It is recommended to copy data by function "3.Copy+Compare". ❷ Set Tolerance of Bad Track Select function "6.3 Skip Error" to set the number of error you accept to skip during copy process. Set tolerance volume from 0/2/5....65535 or unlimited. If the HDD is very critical for content correctness, please set the Skip Error to be "0". It is strongly recommended to keep the Skip Error to be "0" to run tasks. When you set Skip Error not to "0", for some HDDs it might cause tasks passed on the duplicator but fail to use HDDs on your device. ➌ Auto Skip Lower-Speed HDDs Enter function "6.4 Minimum Speed" to setup tolerance speed of target HDDs. Set to check HDDs’ lowest tolerance speed. Users can choose “Don’t care” or set the speed value among 10/20/30~300MB/second. The system will skip any HDD which cannot reach the minimum speed. This setting enables to speed up copying and select HDD speed higher than the setting speed. 17 4 How to Copy HDDs ➍ Auto Skip Lower-Speed Source This setting enables to setup whither to check minimum speed including source HDDs. Select “Yes” to include source HDDs or select “No” to skip source HDDs checking. This function enables to speed up copying speed and setup minimum speed for source HDD. ⌘ Troubleshooting When Duplication Fails Check if too many bad tracks on HDDs cause duplication failures. ☉☉ Check the setting of "6.3 Skip Error". Reset the number to 0 and copy error disks again. ☉☉ Make sure all data cables are properly and firmly connected. ☉☉ Make sure the capacity of source HDD is smaller than target. Check HDDs capacity by selecting "5.1 Show Disk Info". 18 How To Confirm Copy Accuracy 5 How to Confirm Copy Accuracy ⌘ Compare Duplication Results Step1 Prepare source HDD and target HDD. Source HDD Target HDD Step 2 Place source HDD at source port, targets HDD to other ports. Step 3 Use ▲▼ to select "2.Compare" then press "OK". Data compare will proceed. Note When all the target HDD ports are plugged, duplicator would start copying automatically. If not all are plugged, the number of targets shows on LCD. Press "OK" to start. ⌘ Setting of Compare Function It is able to set compare area of HDD at function "6.1 Copy Area" There are four different compare area for selection : ① System and Files, ② All available partition area, ③ Whole HDD, ④ Percentage Compare. 19 6 How to Erase HDDs How to Erase HDDs Note Please notice the data within the HDD will be erased after executing the function. ⌘ How to Erase Data Step 1 Prepare the HDD for erasure. Erase HDD Step 2 Insert the HDD into target port. Note Function 6.7.2 Erase Master is to determine erase source HDD or not. The default setting is "Disable erase source HDD". Step 3 Use "UP"/"DOWN" to select the desired erase method, then press "OK". Data Erase will proceed. 20 How to Erase HDDs 6 ⌘ Setting of Erase Function There are five erase methods: ➀ Quick Erase, ➁ Full Erase, ➂ DoD Erase, ➃ DoD Erase Comp, ➄ Secure Erase ➀ Quick Erase The function will ONLY erase the index of the HDD. It is the quickest way to erase HDD. It will damage the data in HDD, please make sure you have backup all important data before using this function ➁ Full Erase The function will erase the whole sectors on the target HDD. It will take longer time than quick erase. It will damage the data in HDD, please make sure you have backup all important data before using this function. ➂ DoD Erase This is to comply with the U.S.A. Department of Defense (DoD 5220) standard to fully erase the HDD three times bit by bit to rewrite HDD to guarantee the data was deleted. It will damage the data in HDD, please make sure you have backup all important data before using this function. 21 6 How to Erase HDDs ➃ DoD Erase Comp Besides DoD erase, this function will also execute compare function to make sure the random bit was correctly written. This way of erase is to erase HDD over each sector three times: the first time with zeros (0x00), second time with 0xFF and the third time with random characters. There is one final pass to compare random characters by reading. It will damage the data in HDD, please make sure you have backup all important data before using this function. It overwrites every single track on the hard drive with "00". Even HPA/DCO or other data area which are not able to load, can be erased all together Note Please do not disrupt during Secure Erase, otherwise it would cause irretrievable error on HDD, which turns the HDD unusable. 23 7 How to Update BIOS How to Update BIOS ⌘ Update by BIOS HDD Step 1 Prepare one HDD and connect it to source port, then select function 5.2.2 Format HDD. Step 2 Format the HDD Note ☉☉Before updating firmware, one FAT, 2GB partition will be formatted in HDD. That would reduce searching time, and speed up firmware update. ☉☉The data saved in this HDD will be erased. Step 3 Download the latest firmware from PC and save it in HDD. Step 4 Insert HDD into source port (first port), select function 5.2.1 Update BIOS. Update would complete in one minute. 24 How to Use PC-Monitoring 8 How to Use PC-Monitoring 1 Real-time PC Monitoring Real-time PC-Monitoring is a convenient tool to monitor real-time status for advanced series, that real-time tasks skip lower speed HDDs in writing process to keep its best performance. By connecting to PC, all status can be viewed clearly, including copy process. ⌘ Preparation before Start § Installation The related drivers and software ithe series are descripted as followings: • LV07H: PC-Monitoring driver for HDD duplicators. • PL-2303: USB-to-Serial program connects USB-port of your computer to the duplicator. • PC-Link: Software package for PC monitoring interface. Step 1 Open the directory. Click on the icon "PC Link.exe" to start installation. In the next window, continue to click to start and follow the instruction. Or, open icon directly, LV07H.exe, to launch software. 25 8 How to Use PC-Monitoring Step 2 After launching PC-Link software, the install device driver of PL-2303 USB-to-Serial is initiated. Choose tab and press to continue. When the Wizard screen pop up, click to start installation. Step 3 Please wait during installation processing. Step 4 Click to complete installation. 26 How to Use PC-Monitoring 8 § Launch PC-Monitoring Step 1 Install Synchronous Monitor Software LV07H , and its driver PL-2303 . Step 2 Prepare USB cable to connect between computer and the duplicator. Step 3 Launch LV07H by double clicking on software icon "LV07H.exe". Step 4 Turn on the power of the duplicator, LV07H starts to link with the duplicator. Step 5 When the following screen shown, the duplicator is linked to the computer successfully, ready to use real-time monitoring function. Step 6 If the status is not shown normal online status, please check step 1~3 again. 27 8 How to Use PC-Monitoring ⌘ Operation of PC-Monitoring Note Please use specific computer to do PC-Monitoring, and prevent PC operating other tasks. The information of PC-Monitoring can be instant synchronized. Step 1 The status of duplicator shows on-line, and then open monitoring screen. The program is ready to work when the status show STANDBY. Step 2 After placing source & target HDDs into duplicator, execute jobs for duplicator. The program shows all related information of HDDs. It is able to monitor detail information of every HDD through PC-Monitoring, e.g. HDD model, S/N, copy speed, and etc. It is able to record and monitor all the function and work progress during operation. Note Copy speed varies during operation. Step 3 After duplication, the program will show average speed of each HDD. 28 How to Use PC-Monitoring 8 2 Log Report PC-Monitoring program LV07H not only browses log report through PC, but also export log report into .txt file through PC. The file can be saved at specified location and file name. Anyone has the need of management and archive log report can analyses the file on computer. Because log report save every S/N and operation time of every single HDD, it is good for production analyses in the future. ⌘ Browse Log Report through PC Besides PC-Monitoring, LV07H can browse Log Report of duplicator through PC Step 1 After finishing all the task of duplicator, press "ESC" key on duplicator. The status shown on LV07H is "STANDBY". Scroll down to the section, Log Data, on the middle of window, and then select "Generate Log Report". Step 2 After entering "Open Log Window", select the date or period of time for log report generation. 29 8 How to Use PC-Monitoring After selecting the date or period of time for log report generation, log report would shows. Note If there is no record saved at the selected period of time, or record had been wiped out, the program would show No match records! Step 3 Specify save location and file name Step 4 Click Save, log report is saved to the specified location 30 How to Use PC-Monitoring 8 § Log Records & Screen The system can only keep log totally up to 30,000 records of operation information of HDD. One operation on a single HDD is saved as one record. For example, there are 21 records saved when duplicate from one HDD to 20 targets. The log manager can only keep 30000 records. One instruction onto one HDD is recorded as one piece of log record. (e.g. duplication from 1 HDD to 5 targets will be recorded to 5 piece of log.) If the amount of the records reaches up to the limit, the new record will replace and cover the existing record from the beginning and the previous record will be covered one by one. The existing log will keep enternity until all records space full to be covered by newer ones. Background information of this log report Original Source Record: Manage and control the source , confirm the size of the data are consistent. Detailed task records: best reference for production and HR management. HDD S/N Time of execution Yield analysis: the pass and failure rate for yield records. Content was protected by Invisible-Ink Technology ! Please check it by LV07Z.exe iSecuLog protection: guarantee the original data without any changes 31 8 How to Use PC-Monitoring ⌘ Advanced Function (For advanced series only) ➊ Function 7.1.1 Clear ALL Logs After user entering password, the log report saved in duplicator can be wiped out. Note Please close PC-Monitoring program LV07H or disconnect PC from duplicator while clearing log report. ➋ Function 7.1.2 Setup Password Users can reset password to protect log records. To execute function "7.1.1", "7.1.2", you must use "UP"/"DOWN" keys to input password. The default password is "123456". 32 FAQ PC-Monitoring Questions of PC-Monitoring Answer Why duplicator can not execute PCMonitoring? Make sure USB cable is connected betwenn PC and duplicator. It is recommended to attach USB cable and then open LV07H program. Why the monitoring information of LV07H lags, and cannot catch up duplicator? PC-Monitoring consumes most of process resource of PC. If PC process ability is low; runs other tasks at the same time, LV07H might lags. It is highly recommended to run with PC with better process ability, instead of operating other program on PC. 33 FAQ The Duplicator Questions of duplicators Solution 1. The capacity of source HDD is bigger than target HDD. E.g., copy 500GB HDD to 250GB HDD. LCD shows "HDD Too Small" 2. The capacity of source and target are the same, but internal capacity might be slightly different. What OS does duplicator support? Duplicator copies any kinds of OS Can duplicator copy IDE HDD, SSD, mSATA, etc? Yes, it can. As long as adaptor can adopt to SATA interface. How long does it take to duplicate? Duplicator supports 8.1GB/min copy speed. It's around 2 min to copy Win8 OS(approx 12GB) How big the capacity of HDD does duplicator support? Duplicator supports up to 6TB HDD, and MBR/GBT format HDD Can I interupt the copy task while it is not finished? Yes, the program (copy, compare and erase) can be stopped while it is in processing by pressing ESC for aobut 3~4 seconds Will it be safe if I remove the HDD right after copy process? Yes, the device will automatically cut off power of each port to protect HDD during removal from the duplicator. The power of each port will be only be output when the operation is started. What kind of format does duplicator support? FAT16/32/64, ext2/3, NTFS, HFS, HFX, HFS+ are supported for Systems and Files Copy.
