SALES GUIDE Questions and Answers 10000xl SG c17783 6/23/04 7:26 AM Page 2 How does the Epson Expression 10000XL differ from its predecessor, the Epson Expression 1640XL? The Epson Expression 10000XL was designed as a successor to the Epson Expression 1640XL. It offers a higher resolution and dynamic range, plus faster speeds–making it ideal for the graphic arts, prepress and photography markets. The Epson Expression 10000XL includes a custom 2400 dpi CCD featuring Epson MatrixCCD technology, a new lens assembly, a 16-bit A/D converter with 48-bit color, an advanced stepper motor (with Micro Step Drive technology), a bright Xenon light source, and a new image processing ASIC. As a result, the scanner achieves 2400 dpi optical resolution and a broad dynamic range (3.8 Dmax). The high-speed ASIC, plus USB 2.0 and FireWire (IEEE 1394) interfaces, increase data throughput from the scanner to the host computer. While both scanners share similar illumination technology, motor types and certain image processing algorithms, the components in the Epson Expression 10000XL were designed for the most demanding applications. What’s new about the Epson Expression 10000XL? The components of the Epson Expression 10000XL are housed in a sleek, lightweight, industrial design that has a USB 2.0 and FireWire (IEEE 1394) interface built in, along with a slot capable of supporting the optional Epson network scanning card. The color scheme matches Epson’s current line of high-end photo printers such as the Epson Stylus® Photo 2200. How has the transparency unit been improved? Does it offer batch scanning? The transparency unit of the Epson Expression 10000XL offers a larger scanning area and improved speed. Its scan area has increased to 12.2" x 16.5." This gives the scanner the capability to scan up to 48 frames of 35mm film, thirty 35mm slides, eight frames of 4" x 5" film, or six to 18 medium format transparencies–all with one easy setup. Plus, to compensate for the differences in scanning positive and negative film, the unit was designed with two lamps. A bright white lamp is used for positive transparency scanning, while a blue light source is used for negative transparencies, cutting down on the processing time and improving the negative to positive conversion in the final image. These improvements allow the Epson Expression 10000XL to quickly scan large quantities of transparencies, with brilliant results every time. The Epson Expression 10000XL Photo version comes standard with the transparency unit. What does dynamic range mean, and how does it relate to the 16-bit A/D converter and 48-bit color? The dynamic range of a color scanner is the measure of the tonal range that the scanner can capture from an original image. Tonal range refers to the level of detail between the highlights and shadow areas. Dynamic range is represented by a logarithmic value. 2.0 is 100:1, 3.0 is 1000:1, 4.0 is 10,000:1. For reflective originals, a dynamic range of 2.0 can accurately digitize the original; however, for transparencies and negatives, the scanner must have a higher dynamic range. The dynamic range on a properly exposed transparency can be between 3.2 and 3.4, with a Dmax of 3.9. Dmin refers to the lightest tonal value (highlight area) and Dmax refers to the darkest tonal value (shadow area). Scanners with 48-bit color, like the Epson Expression 10000XL, can theoretically capture a dynamic range (Dmax) of 4.8. In practice, however, the Dmax is limited by a scanner’s hardware and electronic makeup. Therefore, the effective value of a scanner’s Dmax is always somewhat lower than the theoretical bit depth capability. For the Epson Expression 10000XL, the effective Dmax is 3.8, based on Epson’s laboratory testing. This Dmax is more than adequate to completely cover the density range of commonly-used reflective and transparent originals, which typically are from 2.4 to 3.7. It is important to note that some of our competitors publish a theoretical value of their scanner’s Dmax, which, in practice, could never truly be achieved. What is the ColorTrue II Imaging System? Epson’s exclusive ColorTrue II Imaging System is a proprietary technology that combines custom optics, a Xenon lamp, Dynamic Range Control, superior image processing ASIC, and Epson MatrixCCD technology. All of these components work together to give Epson scanners high color accuracy, pinpoint registration, and speed. The scanner optics are comprised of precision glass lenses. These custom lenses are used to provide maximum resolving power. This, along with a 2400 dpi CCD, ensures remarkable image quality. The optical components are mounted in a matte black carriage. This helps maintain the precision alignment of the optics, and reduces any stray light or ghosting in the scanner. Dynamic Range Control is used to increase the exposure times of the CCD when scanning transparencies so that more data can be obtained from the shadow areas. What is Micro Step Drive technology? Epson Micro Step Drive technology improves the quality of the sub scan resolution. The Epson Expression 10000XL uses a custom designed high-precision stepper motor mechanism in order to move the 2400 dpi CCD in “half-step” increments, thereby achieving a sub scan resolution of 4800 dpi. This system is ideal for scanning 35mm slides, fine art/line drawings, and other small originals that require critical sharpness, which is especially important for enlargements. How does the AutoFocus optics system impact image quality? Epson’s unique AutoFocus optics system is used by the Epson Expression 10000XL. This system ensures pinpoint focusing on an original up to 6mm above the scanner glass and is useful for scanning 3D items and transparencies. When scanning transparencies and negatives with the Epson custom film holders, the film is raised 2.5mm above the glass to avoid Newton Rings. Newton Rings are small rainbow patterns that occasionally appear in transparency scans, either when the film touches the glass, or when light refracts at an angle when the film is not held a fixed distance from the glass. The AutoFocus system works in Automatic and Manual modes. In Automatic Mode, the scanner takes 3 pre-scans to check for image sharpness, and then automatically sets the ideal focal point. In Manual mode, the user sets the desired focal point. How fast is the Epson Expression 10000XL? Preliminary test data indicates that the Epson Expression 10000XL is one of the fastest B-size scanners on the market. A full scan of an 8.5" x 11" color image at 300 dpi can take as little as 23 seconds. A 35mm slide can be scanned at 2400 dpi in 51 seconds, and a 4" x 5" color transparency can be scanned in under three minutes. What are some of the key features of the Epson Scan scanner driver software? Epson Scan has several modes designed to help the novice or experienced graphic artist get the best possible output. Home mo features icons representing common scan settings, along with eas selections such as automatic sizing with a pull-down menu, and a thumbnail preview mode for film scanning. This automatic functionality, combined with user-controlled settings, is ideal for advanced amateurs or quick scan jobs. - Descreen, Color Restoration and Dust Removal are controlled through the Image Adjustments dialog box in the Epson Scan Home Mode.
