Back row: John Patterson and Don Burr. 1960 - • Concern that there is no county nurse. • Howard County schools studying reorganization • 4H Enrollment 200 female and 181 male 1960 • LIVESTOCK DISEASE CONCERNS: • Swine – TGE, cholera, rhinitis, brucellosis, erysipelas, leptospirosis • Cattle – Mastitis, leptospirosis, brucellosis, parasites, warbles. • Poultry – respiratory disease, parathyphoid, pullorum, tuberculosis, sinusitis • Sheep – Parasites, scabies and worms. 1961 Extension Budget • In 1961 the Extension budget was $14,000 • Wallace’s Farmer Master Farmer recognition went to Ralph Fox, the first to receive this recognition from Howard County. • Hugh Kuhn hired in county to be County Dairy Herd Improvement Association testor. 1961 – County Fair • 1961 Fair held August 11-14. • Girl’s exhibited 536 exhibits at county fair garnishing 162 blue, 279 red and 101 white placings. • Dr. Perkins and Leonard Moudry organized the Flying Hoofs 4-H Club. 1962 Howard County Swine Improvement Association • September 1962 • 49 cross bred and purebred gilts sold averaging $59 at a gilt sale sponsored by the Association. Cresco Chamber of Commerce helped promote and served 4000 sandwiches. Leonard Schultz was automotive project leader. • Phil McCabe & Ron Moen attended 4-H Leadership Camp 1963 Fund Drive started to construct 4-H bldg. – Completed in 1965 1964 – Dairy Certificates 1964 • Extension Director Karl Griffith secured new office space at 211 North Elm. • 66 Dairy herds on DHIA test. • 1st Dairy production cow sale – November 1964 with 43 production tested cows sold. • Fair July 23-26, 1964 – 220 4H ag exhibits, 517 home economics exhibits, 30 related exhibits displayed. 1964 Drought • 1964 many meetings conducted related to harvesting drought affected crops. • Iowa Master Corn Grower contest participants were: Ray Langreck, Kenneth Shea, Gerald Burr, Johnson Bros., Edmund Schmitt, Arlo Schmitt. Left is Rev. Baker. 1965 MAX SCHMIDT – IFYE delegate to Israel 1966 IOWA MASTER CORN GROWER CONTEST • Twenty five area farmers – top entry was F. Stuart Hale of Leroy with yield of 150.39. • 135 farmers attended Twilight Field Day at Experimental Farm – program on 21 and 42 inch rows in corn and beans.
