This document will outline the basic requirements for creating a cloud concept using an iPad.
Audience:
All staff.
Why learn about creating cloud concepts on iPad?
The iPad provides a one-stop device for the creation of Cloud concepts.
Using your iPad and a range of Apple and third party apps, you can quickly and easily create a rich and engaging learning resource for your students. This document outlines the basic process for creating your cloud concept using an iPad and lists some useful apps to help you get started.
Planning Before you get started producing any resource make sure you have properly planned your work. This might involve creating a script, collating a storyboard and outlining a shot-list. You will also need to consider the purpose of your cloud concept and establish who your audience is going to be. In the planning stage, you need to think about your location and the different elements you will require for your concept. Knowing what elements you can use in your concept will be helped if you are familiar with a range of apps and platforms. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the technologies available to you. Use this guide to find out more. If you are going to be filming a person for your Cloud concept, please ensure the participant signed a consent form 1. Be aware of Deakin’s privacy obligations and licensing arrangements and ensure that you are creating approved original content for your production.
Video editing apps There are two major video editing applications for iPad: Apple iMovie and Pinnacle Studio. Both of these apps have similar functionality and allow you to create high-quality cloud concepts from your iPad. In this document we will be focussing on Apple iMovie. iMovie Apple iMovie is an easy to use video editing tool for the iPad. It integrates seamlessly with the iPad’s inbuilt camera and microphone and can import movies and images from your camera roll. What makes iMovie so useful is that anything you create with a third party app that can be exported to your camera roll can also be used in your Cloud concept using iMovie. This includes a range of apps for camera effects, photo manipulation, annotation and screen capture, diagrams, slideshows and much more. The timeline Below is an example of an iMovie project timeline. The timeline is where you piece together all the elements that you have created (using other apps) to build your cloud concept. These elements might include: backing audio, sound effects and voiceovers, or still images and video from your camera roll. Once inside the app, there is a help icon on the top left of the screen that will show some tool tips. These tips can help you to navigate iMovie. Capturing video To capture video in iMovie you can use the inbuilt camera directly from the iMovie app. Tips for capturing video using the iPad: 1. Use the ‘maximum volume’ physical volume button to trigger the recording (instead of the onscreen button). 2. Where possible, use the rear camera as it has a better quality sensor. 3. Use the focus option by tapping the screen on your focal point before you hit record. When capturing with the inbuilt camera app you will not be able to add any effects to your video. To do this you will need to use a third party app to get your desired effect. For information on video capturing techniques visit the sound and vision support page 5 on the Deakin website.

Apps for cloud concepts The below tables identify some useful apps for creating elements of your cloud concepts. By understanding how these apps work and what they create, you will be able to better plan for your Cloud concepts. Visit the relevant apps support pages for more information.

Camera Apps Camera apps allow you to apply visual effects to your still images and videos. These become very useful for enhancing your photos and video to use in your Cloud concept.
