Qualifying a Customer for a Wood Stove

In busy season we all get a few phone calls from angry consumers who aren’t happy with the wood stove they currently have. The trouble is that the stove is new. I end up asking a few questions and realize that the unit that they wanted is not necessarily what they should have taken home, or they have unrealistic expectations from their new stove. Here are a couple of pointers that may help prevent that angry customer from coming back and telling you that “the stove you sold me doesn’t heat.” Keep in mind what the consumer is using the wood stove for. For example, a stove used for heating versus a stove just for pretty, will drastically change what size of unit they should be guided towards. As a heating example, having a 600 square foot uninsulated basement will need a much bigger unit than a 1000 square foot well insulated living room. Think about and mention heat loss to your customer. It may seem like common sense, but I’ve sold a guy a wood stove that “didn’t heat” – well it did, but the single pane glass windows robbed the house of all that heat! Layout is another important factor to consider. A wood stove installed on an outside wall will have drastically different heating characteristics than a unit installed in a central location. Coming from Winnipeg, climate is something else to consider. A bigger unit is usually necessary when the temperature is -40 outside. Freight Damage Many people forget the cost of freight when they think about business expenses, but if you choose the wrong carrier—perhaps one who won’t back up their services even though they may have betters rates than their competitors—these costs can become difficult to overcome.
