Call for FREE SAMPLE 16 rubb 9 lbs. o f er c ush ion 5-Year manufacturer’s prorated replacement warranty (if properly anchored – see next page) WHAT IS VULCANIZATION? “Vulcanization” is a special chemical process invented by Charles Goodyear. It stabilizes the elastic properties of rubber, effectively making the mat into a “single, huge molecule.” Vulcanized rubber has a stable shape which cannot be reversed. It can take repeated loads and return to its original shape. Most other mats use a “bound rubber” process, which combines recycled tire rubber with various adhesives ... under pressure. Variations in the adhesive formula can dramatically affect a mat’s ability to resist long-term exposure from load pressure, moisture and chemicals. ADVANTAGES OF VULCANIZATION? Vulcanization = “single-molecule type construction.” Vulcanized mats retain their “elastic memory.” While all mats will stretch under load pressure, vulcanized mats will spring back to their original shape. Even after years of use, their softness and shape will remain the same. Single-molecule type construction = “single piece of rubber.” Vulcanized mats feature excellent flexibility, and can be handled and stacked without damage. They won’t crumble nor deteriorate from daily exposure to load pressure, moisture, chemicals, sun, or hot/cold extremes (see longer warranty above). Elastic memory = “self healing.” Sharp cuts will bounce back, becoming almost invisible. If an oversize hole is drilled for installation, the surrounding vulcanized rubber will grip the fastener, creating a seal. Nonabsorbent = no place for germs, moisture or dirt to hide. Vulcanized mats clean more thoroughly ... due to the non-porous surface. DISADVANTAGES OF VULCANIZATION? “Vulcanization” is more expensive than a “bound-rubber” process. However, vulcanized mats will remain softer, are self-healing, and are more durable. Return to Index 1-5/16" Vulcanized Mat™ 3 More Cow Comfort — Less Maintenance ➞ Nonabsorbent — easier to clean ➞ 1-5/16" Extra-thick ... for better cushioning ... much more insulation than traditional cow mats. Special air-channel design gives added softness ... quick drainage — 1-5/16" cushion comfort — features excellent protection against abrasion and udder injuries — plus surer footing — Special anti-slip surface design — provides non-porous surface — superior traction — Air-channel design on underside of mat reduces bacteria-forming moisture buildup from condensation — Cows will spend more time lying on vulcanized mat ... and eating ... for increased milk production — Saves 80% or more bedding — Easy to install — anchor on front end only — requires three TAP8100 and three F803575. Measure 3-3/4" from top and sides of mat — use 1/4" masonry bit and drill holes through mat into cement. Position bottom end of mat close to gutter edge for extra protection of cow’s udders. Lag mat across front end using 3-mat anchors (so mat can be picked up for cleaning, if ever required). Measure 4" from top and side of mat and mark off holes. Use 1/4" masonry bit and drill holes through mat into cement. Drill holes 1/4" deeper than anchor, since dust tends to go back into holes. Insert nylon anchor body in hole and tap gently until head of anchor body is set tightly against mat (dip anchor body in liquid soap first to make job easier). With several sharp hammer blows, drive nail into nylon anchor body to expand. CEMENTING MATS IN NEW CONCRETE — For new free and tie stall barns, mats can be cemented into new concrete. Slope platform 3" to 5". Position bottom end of mat close to gutter edge for extra protection of cow’s udders. Provide a 4" border along top end of mat and 8" between mats. The bond between mat and fresh concrete may soon break, but concrete border surrounding each mat will hold it in place. Pour platform to elevation 3/4" below final height and level. Allow one hour for initial set, then install mats. Do not push mat into concrete as this will result in a much harder surface. Pour border around mat and trowel flush with mat surface. Lag mat across bottom end using 3-mat anchors (refer to anchoring instructions in preceding paragraph). CUTTING MATS FOR A CUSTOM FIT — Mats can be cut with a sharp linoleum knife. Dip knife often into cold (not hot) water for extra lubrication. If you have to notch out for posts, make cuts as close as possible to diameter of pipe. Some installers use a maul and a short length of pipe with a sharpened end to punch out holes for posts. For faster cutting, use a reciprocating portable saw, i.e., Sawzall.® Return to Index COZY COW® Top Wear Cover 6 For Use Over Rubber Filled Mattresses ✦ Heavy-duty ✦ Nonwoven (high-strength) ✦ Water-repellent — polymer coated (consistent thickness). Large exhaust duct (see specs below) Fresh air inlets (use windows and doors — close ceiling inlets, hayholes, gutters & sidewall fans in summer to prevent “shortcircuiting” the end-to-end air flow). Loyal Exhaust Fans FAN CFM NEEDED Height For 2-1/2 MPH air flow = height x barn width x 220 For Barn width 3 MPH air flow = height x barn width x 264 Note: Total fan CFM should provide at least 450 CFM for each large-size holstein cow in hot weather. An air speed of 3 MPH helps evaporate water off cow. • The beauty of tunnel ventilation is that ALL of the fresh air which is pulled into the back end of the barn is drawn through the barn as a block of air (ceiling to floor and sidewall to sidewall), flowing over, under and around cows. The result is more complete air movement without “dead air” spots. All the air sucked into the tunnel (barn) is pulled through it (just like sucking through a straw!) Inside temperature is kept at or slightly below outside temperature. Many farmers claim it’s the next best thing to air conditioning! • 2-1/2 – 3 MPH summer air flow cools cows so they will eat and milk more. It cools down the barn faster in the evening and carries away heat, humid air, flies, dust, disease organisms and ammonia odor. Air flow dries feed alleys and reduces feed spoilage, keeping cows cleaner and extending equipment life. • Keep windows and doors closed — open only at the end of barn opposite fans. Barn must be “tight” to pull air through entire length. • Haymow installation illustrated — fans draw up more of warmer ceiling air, fans quieter, further from humans and animals, first floor windows can be kept for light, and fans remain easier to close off in winter. However, first floor installation eliminates need for hayholes and plywood air duct (preventing loss of mow space), but requires OSHA fan guards and possibly cattle-grate guards to protect fans (available from factory). • Fan(s) can also be mounted along sidewalls, close to end, if end wall space is limited. L-shaped barns should have all fans in one end and inlets at the extreme opposite end, not at the juncture of the two wings. T-shaped barns will need more total fan capacity to avoid different air velocities in the different wings. • Position fans to utilize prevailing wind if possible. However, consider fan exhaust odors if a house is nearby. The breeze from air being discharged into barn yard will reduce fly control costs. • If using thermostats, locate halfway down the barn. (Some farmers line them up with related fans for “more accurate temperature control.”) Set about 3º to 5º apart, starting at about 45°. Thermostat and on/off switch can be wired to a small pilot-light box, which lights up when related fan in haymow is operating. LARGE EXHAUST DUCT SPECS • Air pulled up through “hayhole type” opening (use inlet formula below to size opening). Duct height = top of fan. • Use 1/2" to 5/8" plywood with 2x4 framing. Caulk joints. If hay bales are to be stacked on top of exhaust duct, use thicker plywood and heavier post and beam construction. • Insulated plywood door (1-1/2" foam board) — hinged and opened with rope and pulley — closed in winter. Duct can have separate door to run just one fan (smallest) in winter. INLETS NEEDED • Summer inlet square feet needed (doors and windows) = Total fan CFM 400 or 500 or 600  (number to use varies between “experts”) • Hayhole-type exhaust opening in mow floor requires same square footage as above formula (adjust upward to allow for width of joists). • Undersized inlets will starve fans and reduce air flow by as much as 20% or more. • Increasing inlet openings will reduce static pressure and increase air flow. An inexpensive wind meter aids in adjusting window and door openings, to obtain correct air flow speed. A chemical smoke gun can also be used to locate dead spots (or shake and squeeze a bottle of talcum powder to check micro-currents). Smoke from a cigarette or other heat source may not accurately show air flow patterns because warm smoke tends to rise vs. follow air stream. • When temperature is below 60º, adjust inlets so outside air does not flow directly over cows. Use many smaller inlets vs. 1 or 2 large inlets. Close inlets in cooler areas of barn to slow air flow and open more inlets in warmer areas as required to speed air flow. • If you run one fan in winter, reduce inlet openings to slow air flow (slotted inlets, mounted toward or in ceiling, are often used). In coldest weather, you only need 32 CFM per 1,300 lb. cow (65 CFM for mild winter conditions and 130 CFM for spring and fall). Use timer and run fan only at intervals. Monitor cows to avoid freezeburn. ©2011 by Roth Mfg. Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Return to Index THE COLD FACTS vs. HOT AIR! 29 • Loyal’s special computer-designed, 4-wing blade provides quieter, higher air flow — with less amp draw to lower operating costs. • Extra-high efficiency, state-of-the-art motors. • Industrial-type, cast-iron greasable bearings — no stamped housings with rubber-ring inserts to wear out. • Linked shutter panels — no flapping. • Exclusive EZ-swivel shutter fasteners — for quick, tight mounting. • Heavier-gauge construction — for smoother, quieter operation (33% heavier-gauge housing than competitors’ cloned cone models). • Lock-nuts vs. metal screws keep fan tight and solid. • Loyal fan housings are factory assembled — we test-run every unit for 1/2 hour before shipping. REMEMBER — the higher the efficiency (CFM/watt), the lower your monthly electric bill. The higher the air volume (CFM), the fewer fans you’ll need to buy. Don’t make the mistake of buying an inefficient, low-volume fan when you can have a top-rated Loyal Fan for less money! COMPARING APPLES TO ORANGES? Don’t get fooled — some desperate fan manufacturers are advertising their fan CFM/watt and CFM, but are not disclosing that those performance numbers are at non-real-world .00" S.P. vs. .05" S.P. (as listed on electric company fan rebate lists). Some are advertising “highest CFM/watt,” but are not disclosing that it’s for low vs. high speed and for .00" S.P. vs. .05" S.P. Some are also comparing the price and performance of their fans WITHOUT a shutter to ours WITH a shutter. Demand straight talk! Return to Index 30 WHY THIS IS THE BEST FAN-DRIVE-SYSTEM! LOYAL WALL FANS (48" & 36") INDUSTRIAL-QUALITY CONSTRUCTION Designed for Extended Use (Not a light, noisy 3-wing fan!) • Unmatched rigidity — in/out, up/down, and side to side • High-strength, 1-1/2" square tubing — thicker-walled 11 ga. 70% more rigid than comparable formed-angle, channel or round-tube mounts • Sturdy, 4-wing blade eliminates “helicopter” sound produced by 3-wing blades. Less noise = less animal stress. • Thicker, reinforced, all-welded fan-blade hub (not ‘stamped’ steel) • Tube-mount set back 6" from blade ... to maximize quietness • Thicker 12 ga. oversize motor/bearing plate ... with formed-angle lip for added strength ... heaviest on market. POWER TWIST™ LINK BELT • High-strength, low-stretch, longer life ... simply remove the links to adjust tension (no wrenches required). • Eliminates the need for hinged, motor mount and spring-loaded belt tensioner ... avoids stretched belts from motor-bouncing ... causing motor-mount hinges and spring tensioners to wear out ... which causes even greater motor bouncing and shortened belt, bearing and shaft life. • Elimination of hinged, motor-mount and spring tensioner also provides better pulley alignment ... longer belt life. Poly-Clad specially-engineered marine plywood combines poly’s resistance to feed acids with plywoods rigidity. Won’t sag (unlike solid-poly), nor rot/warp (unlike wood board). Poly-Clad® marine plywood has been successfully used by major manure-spreader and chopper-box manufacturers for years. It won’t rot, rust, warp, or need refinishing. It’s totally resistant to most chemicals. Poly-Clad® 3/4" plywood is specially engineered to meet the strict performance criteria of the marine industry (US Product Standard PS I-83). It is carefully manufactured from 100%, 7-ply Douglas fir (dried to 8% or less) and marine glue, for maximum strength and flatness. A .030" white, high-density, UV-stabilized, poly facing and a .015" poly backing are then pressure bonded, using an exterior glue, to provide a 100% moisture barrier. Poly-Clad® facing/backing won’t ever need painting. Poly-Clad® acts as a protective wear surface against abrasion and reduces shear forces transmitted into the plywood ... resulting in a stronger, quieter-running elevator. ® Return to Index 35 DETACHABLE DOUBLE-CHAIN LOYAL 18" POLY ELEVATOR PRICE LIST   STARTER UNIT — must be ordered Selling Item No. Description Price D___ Starter Unit (includes drive and idler hardware — factory installed,        plus V-belt; does not include any sections/footage)......................... $852.00 (ORDER MOTOR, PULLEY & HOPPER SEPARATELY — SEE BELOW)   SECTIONS — order as needed   Recommended Maximum Length - 80' D___ Elevator Section (includes #62 detachable chain with poly flites, and poly guide rails for conveyor chain). Return to Index 45 POLY SILO HOPPER SWIVEL HOPPER PUTS MATERIAL WHERE YOU WANT IT — SAVES FEED AND CLEANUP TIME Super-tough, low-cost poly won’t rust or crack — even at extreme temperatures! Directs silage and haylage into conveyor, cart or mixer. Prevents feed losses. Ends problems from flying material. Eliminates feed hang-up on bottom silo rungs and rings, and on electrical equipment. Keeps feed room clean.   The Poly Silo Hopper helps prevent silo chute updrafts of warm, moist, bacterial-laden air from livestock and of feed-dust (which hangs up in silo chute and in the silo, including the unloader). Also helps prevent entry of rodents and insects. Simply pull out like a drawer for easy access into silo chute. Takes only seconds to remove and replace — no attachment to silo chute needed. The bottom 10-1/2" hopper hole can be enlarged to 12" by sawing off hopper bottom. 12" poly extension pipe is also available in 30" slip together lengths.   Deep throat design handles high moisture corn and even haylage with no plugging. Slick, smooth surface for fast discharge. Other fiberglass brands may have a rough, textured, inside surface which slows discharge and can cause plugging. High-strength polyethylene is lightweight and much more durable than steel or fiberglass — used for years in heavy duty applications. Thick walled hopper is extra tough — immune to silage acids — resists heat, cold, sunlight and warpage. 5" Anchor Bolts (furnished) Two rugged steel guide legs provide solid support for hopper. Lag legs to concrete with one piece masonry anchor bolts (3/8"D x 1-7/8"L) equipped with expandable sleeves (furnished). Use masonry bit same diameter as anchors and drill holes 1/4" deeper than anchors. Insert anchors and tap until heads are flush with guide legs. Tighten heads 3 to 4 full turns or until resistance is felt. Or use J-bolts with nuts. Hook J-bolts around silo rings and bolt to guide legs. Leg hole spacing can be varied somewhat to fit different width silo rings by pushing on guide legs. UPS SHIPPABLE Trim with saw to fit snug against silo wall and chute. (Top view) Large – 30" I.D. Depends on the underlying surface condition and whether it’s flat or round ... plus your budget. 1/4" is stiffer and lays flatter — for a “more-level" appearance. 1/8" is more likely to eventually take the shape of any underlying holes and protruding rocks. However, if you fill in the manger holes and rough spots with lime, sand or ready-to-mix concrete, 1/8" will lay almost as level as 1/4", and will probably last as long as you are farming. 1/8" is more pliable, and is easier to install over curved surfaces, such as round/curved mangers and auger trough. However, 1/4" can be made more flexible by “conditioning” it in a very-warm room (such as a heated milkhouse) or in direct sunlight. Unroll liner for quicker heat absorption. After liner has “relaxed,” simply step on it to press liner into your curved/round manger or auger trough. 1/4" is recommended on conveyor and barn-cleaner chain applications up to 30" wide. Because 1/4" will lay flatter, it is less prone to hump and become worn or torn by chain riding over it. 1/8" or 3/16" is recommended in manure-spreader and other chain applications over 30" wide. LENGTH — Rolls vs. sheets are ordered by over 97% of our manger-liner customers ... because rolls are quicker and easier to install. Also, rolls are seamless for easier sweeping (no cracks for moisture or feed to spoil in). Rolls recommended for conveyors up to 13" wide. Install as two pieces if conveyor is longer than 50.' Use 20' pieces for conveyors over 13" wide. WIDTH — Because poly is very slippery (especially when wet), allow space for walkway beside manger liner. 30" provides easier cleanup of feed pushed out toward walkway, plus more floor protection from feed acids. 24" is popular if aisle space is limited, and also with budget buyers. Holddowns will reduce spillage into feed alley by up to 90%. Width of liner should be narrower than conveyor or gutter. The extra side clearance will allow poly to expand lengthwise when warm, without binding against side-walls and humping. Order liner 1/8" narrower up to 13" wide, and 1/4" narrower over 13" wide. If necessary, liner width can be quickly narrowed for your special application, using a table saw. EXPANSION/CONTRACTION—Poly liner will expand as temperature increases and contract as temperature decreases. Do not install poly on a cold day. “Condition” poly and building or equipment at 45° or above (the hotter the better), for 24 hours prior to installation, to minimize expansion. A heated milkhouse or direct sunlight works good (elevate liner off cold floor/ground and unroll for quicker heat absorption). Allow 1/16" of expansion/ contraction per foot (both lengthwise and widthwise — for variations from “average" temperature). If installed when temperatures are below the “annual average,” allow for more expansion than contraction. When temperatures are above the “annual average,” allow for more contraction than expansion. Holes in poly should be drilled up to 1/8" oversize depending on installation temperature. Manger-liner is not lagged down, but is free to expand without pushing against nail anchors and humping (see “POLY HOLDDOWNS” for more information). Conveyor, gutter, and barn cleaner chute liner is fastened only at the intake end of each section of liner, and the sections are overlapped 2" — lag front edge of each bottom section only. For other applications where the liner is fastened at several locations (vs. just at intake end of each section), drill oversize or slotted fastener holes. Do not butt sections of liner tightly together. Instead, provide expansion joint of 1/16" per foot (silicone caulk to prevent moisture and material from seeping under) — on wider joints, some installers will use “shiplap" design. However, some budget buyers simply unroll liner over limed manger floor, allowing curved, outside surface of roll to face up toward ceiling. They report that after several days, the weight of the feed sitting on top of the curved-liner surface, plus the pressure of the cows pushing down on liner as they eat, plus the suction created between the limed floor and the underside of the liner, will level liner so its flat. They also note that the edges of the liner bite into the cement, preventing feed from creeping under the liner. BENEFITS • Many farmers claim poly manger liner saves a minimum of 1 lb. of feed per cow per day. If you’re throwing feed away, you need a liner — it can pay for itself in as little as 6 months • Unlike cement; smooth, hard surface won’t absorb moisture or feed  —  helps eliminate bacteria buildup (which causes feed souring, mold and musty odors). Even if water bowls overflow, feed will stay fresher longer. Unlike porous cement, glasslike liner surface doesn’t contain a “starter bed" of bacteria. Helps eliminate fly breeding/feeding • Cows eat and milk more, since feed stays fresher — and because smooth poly doesn’t hurt cows tongues like rough cement and protruding rocks • High-density poly won’t pit and wear like cement — enables cows to lick the feeding surface clean (increases grain consumption of cows that wouldn’t lick feed out of rough, rocky cement) — protects cement floors • Prevents loss of expensive protein, mineral and vitamin additives, which imbed and sour in cement pores and cracks • Cuts cleaning time — ends scraping — sweeps easily with a light pushbroom. Because feed doesn’t sour, cows clean up their feed and a heavy scraper is not needed • Low-cost way to make old mangers better than new • Much less expensive and easier to install than ceramic tile or epoxy resurfacers • Liner can be driven over with cart without cracking INSTALLATION (if holddowns not used, refer to “NOTE” below drawings above) 1. “Condition” poly at 45° or above (the hotter the better), for 24 hours prior to installation, to minimize future expansion. A heated milkhouse or direct sunlight works good. Elevate liner off cold floor/ground and unroll for quicker heat absorption. Weight-down liner to prevent it from rolling back up. Allowing the liner time to “relax” vs. wrestling with a “springy” roll, will save you installation time. 2. Predrill poly holddowns (3/8" holes at 12" intervals, starting 1" from end) 3. Thoroughly clean old feed, dirt and moisture from manger to prevent musty odors 4. If 1/8" liner is used, fill in manger holes and rough spots with ready-to-mix concrete, sand, or lime, to provide flat, underlying support. Many farmers will fill in holes, even if 1/4" liner is used, to prevent water from ponding under liner and possibly creating musty odors, or if liner is to be driven over. Some farmers drill 3/8" to 3/4" holes in low-lying portions of manger floor and under water bowls, straight down to gravel base, to permit drainage (refill holes with sand to aid drainage). 5. Unroll liner and turn over so inside of roll faces up toward ceiling. Position liner in manger so joints, if any, are away from drinking cups and are between cows (you don’t want cows to lick over joints). 6. On flat mangers, mount flat holddown flush over liner as illustrated above and lag holddown to curb, using an 1/4" dia. x 2"L nylon nail anchors (1-1/2"L if cement is sound). See “NYLON NAIL ANCHOR” instructions on next page. Also lag where cement is uneven for a tight fit. Butt ends of holddowns together (because of smaller temperature variations in barn), to prevent feed from accumulating in cracks. Mount recessed holddown over liner. Reposition liner under curb and feed-alley holddowns to allow for expansion/contraction (see “EXPANSION/CONTRACTION” instructions on prior page). Lag same as curb holddown. Return to Index 51 POLY HOLDDOWNS 5/8" 2-3/8" 2" 5/8" 5/8" 3/4" RECESSED HOLDDOWN For mangers — feed-alley side. Keeps feed in manger — reduces spillage into feed-alley by up to 90%. Also used as END HOLDDOWN (at ends of mangers to prevent feed and juices from getting under liner. Can be shaped same as joint holddown.) 3/4" 2-3/8" JOINT HOLDDOWN (Use at joints, if any. Can be shaped to fit round gutter by softening in pail of hot water for 1/2 hour.) FLAT HOLDDOWN (for mangers) If you choose to anchor liner, poly holddowns are recommended for securing liner in mangers and feed bunks, rather than lagging liner directly to floor with nylon nail anchors (especially when 1/8" liner is installed). Holddowns are lagged about every 1' and where cement is uneven, for a tight fit. The liner is not lagged and is free to expand, without pushing on nail anchors and humping. There are no nail anchor heads protruding from liner to interfere with cleaning. Holddowns require fewer nail anchors, cutting installation costs. Holddowns prevent feed from entering and building up underneath liner. Should water pond under liner and possibly create musty odors, the liner can be removed for drying manger, simply by pulling liner out from underneath Unit of Approx. Every-other strip is reversed when installed. The strips’ concave-convex curvature will form a good, energysaving thermal seal, but spread apart easily for passage. OVERLAP METHODS PARTIAL OVERLAP    How to select the correct-width strip   and the overlap method FULL OVERLAP NOTE: Narrower, thinner strips with less overlap are easier for people and animals to pass through. Allow minimum of 18" between objects going through door and bottom of mount — this may require locating bottom of mount further above door molding than the recommended 3" UPS SHIPPABLE   How to FIGURE THE LINEAR FEET OF STRIP REQUIRED TO COVER AN OPENING (A) Overall width = opening width plus 6" on each side for better thermo seal (B) Overall height = floor to top of mount (see “MOUNTING TIPS — Note" above). Many other brands require a heaping load to obtain their rated capacity. • High-strength polyethylene (pronounced poly-ethel-lean) is lightweight and much more durable than plywood, steel or fiberglass • Superior performance has been proven — used for years in heavy-duty industrial applications (meets FDA Regulation 121.2501) • Long-life, high-density, food-grade polyethylene is non-porous — resists moisture, silage acids, feed additives and other chemicals • Extremely tough — resists heat, cold, sunlight and warpage. Excellent stress cracking and puncture resistance — even at extreme temperatures • Thick-walled, seamless one piece hopper is extra strong and leakproof — no corners or seams for feed or bacteria to harbor within • Ribbed construction adds even more strength and rigidity to sides • Easier to sanitize — slick, smooth surface both inside and out, wipes or washes clean in minutes • Special rounded bottom design for faster unloading and dumping. No sharp corners or seams to catch forks, shovels or scoops • Rugged, all-welded, bolt-on, steel frame for solid support. Powder coated for corrosion resistance. • Wheel brackets attach to frame, not to hopper, to prevent stress on and breakage of hopper • Rust-resistant, stainless steel truss head bolts and fender washers are used for attaching hopper to frame • Roll smoother on big semi-pneumatic or air tires with grease fittings. Heavy-duty roller bearings, not lighter ball bearings, used on all air-tire carts • Carts quickly turn in a stationary circle on large, rugged swivels with grease fittings • Quieter operation — rounded polyethylene edges prevent damage to your doors, stalls and walls — reduce noise • 7 and 11 bushel capacity carts are ideal for narrow alleys or sharp turns where larger carts are unusable (With semi-pneumatic tires) Maximum Item Bushel Number Capacity* P7-4W   7 Bu. The separate water rinse keeps disinfectant solution cleaner, longer. TIPS ON HOW TO USE YOUR FOOTBATH Footbathing after milking is preferred, since chemicals tracked inside will corrode metals. Locate footbath by exit door of stall barn, or in exit lane of milking parlor, so cows walk through it twice a day. Cows should leave footbath onto a dry, firm surface. Walking cows over a thin bed of lime after the footbath is also very beneficial. The lime acts as a backup to the footbath in keeping the skin over the heel areas hard and dry, and provides good footing. TIP: If your cows initially try to walk around or jump over footbath, fill it with hay. Gradually remove the hay over the next several days, until your cows are used to walking through the footbath. Position so cows can not walk around it – close doors as needed. Fill footbath with a 2-1/2% to 5% copper sulfate solution. Do not use concentrations greater than 5%, as they can harm skin on a cow’s feet or may splash up on a cow’s teats. Once existing foot problems have been reduced, cut solution percentage to 3% or 2-1/2%. The footbath solution should be 3-1/2" to 6" deep. It should be emptied and cleaned thoroughly once a week, more often if it becomes diluted with waste (the strength of the solution will decrease during use, but copper sulfate is not quickly inactivated by manure. The appearance of the solution does not necessarily reflect its effectiveness). Most vets claim that the emptied solution should not cause contamination problems if it is added to barn manure waste. Regular use of a footbath as a preventative treatment is very important. Use of a footbath only after the outbreak of clinical disease is not generally effective. Most vets recommend using footbath with disinfectant solution two times a day for at least two days per week. During the remainder of each week, they recommend filling footbath daily with clean water so cows can walk through it at each milking. Some so-called “bargain grates” have fewer cross rods • Side angles are thicker for longer life ... wider to adjust to differences in your gutter width (short side angles allow liquids to drain into gutter) • Built on jigs — grate rods are consistently spaced. Permits our scraper to work smoothly and rapidly (Some so-called “bargain grates” may actually cost you more in the long run because of extra cleaning time.) • Our grate rod spacing preferred for cows. Some so-called “bargain grates” have fewer rods. This can significantly increase chance of a valuable cow catching its hoof between rods and injuring hoof and leg. Our spacing still permits most manure to pass through (straw must be chopped short to go through grates) • 5/8" grate rods provide less danger of cows’ hooves slipping through rods, than do 3/4" rods with identical 1-3/8" spacing between rods. 5/8" rods easier on cows’ hooves than 3/4" rods, because 5/8" rods have less radius and rod centers are closer (2" vs. 2-1/8") • Grates made with 1/8" to 1/4" side clearance • Unpainted steel finish Flat grate For Gutter Type Width 16" Flat 16" 2" Raise 16" 3" Raise 18" Flat 18" 2" Raise 18" 3" Raise No. of Grate Rods 7 8 8 8 9 9 Per 4' Grate (4-cross rods) Item Approx.
